RESEARCH REGARDING THE WATER CONSUMPTION OF TOMATOES, GREEN PEPPER AND CUCUMBERS CULTIVATED IN SOLARIUMS

In such conditions, saving water represents a very important aspect, both economically and socially. But in horticulture saving water must consider another very important aspect, that of providing food for a continuously growing population. So horticultors have the difficult task of obtaining big productions as well as saving water. Our research come to support the cultivators who grow tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers in solariums. Determining precisely the water consumption of this species will create the possibility of avoiding both the excess and the lack of water of the tomatoes, green peppers and cucumbers grown in solariums, each of them having negative effects on production. Establishing the best water regime of this crop will lead to the application of optimum water quantities, at the right time and by the most efficient irrigation methods. This way, the cultivators will have the possibility of obtaining high productions, of superior quality, justified economically

RESEARCHES REGARDING FIGHTING AGAINST EROSION ON NEW FOUNDED CULTIVATED GRASS LANDS IN THE NORTH WEST OF ROMANIA

One of the first order problems which interest through its importance the whole billowy surface of the country is the preventing and fighting against soil erosion. Although there were made antierozional works on significant surfaces, their rhythm is inferior the development rhythm of the soil erosion and even these works didn’t always reach their aim. The experiments made revealed the decidedly part of the vegetal cover in fighting against soil erosion , part amplified also by the high productions of fodder gained in the case of using the biological material on different slope lands. The antierozional measures with biological character must have at their origin a study and detailed researches of the vegetation, for establishing the species and the herb mixtures corresponding to the conditions from the respective region

RESULTS OF TWO DECADES OF RESEARCH WORK ON STABILISATION AND AGRICULTURAL REVALUATION OF AN APPROPRIATED LANDSLIDE

Starting with 1976, a totally unproductive piece of land located in the Chinteni Valley, Cluj County, severely degraded by landslides, was used as an experimental field in order to study the actual possibilities of agricultural reinstatement of these lands. Out of a large range of problems studied since then, the present paper shows the most important experimental results concerning the gradual stabilisation and agricultural revaluation of landslides by means of hydro- and agroappropriative works applied. The presented results emphasise the fact that as a consequence of appropriation works applied to this landslide (drainage and levellment) as well as by using crop technologies specific for slopes, the horizontal and vertical displacements of ground have been significantly reduced. Gradually, there has been noted an obvious tendency of a long term land stabilisation followed by a natural incorporation of this land into the equilibrium condition of the slope to which it belongs

Restraint and Social Isolation Stressors Differentially Regulate Adaptive Immunity and Tumor Angiogenesis in a Breast Cancer Mouse Model

The ability of stress to induce immune suppression is widely recognized, but the mechanisms underlying the effects of stress on the adaptive immune system during tumor progression are not completely understood. To study the effect of stress on the immune system in vivo, we used a preclinical immunocompetent mouse model bearing 4T1 mammary adenocarcinoma cells. Mice were randomized into 4 groups, including social isolation (SI), acute restraint stress (aRRS), chronic restraint stress (cRRS), or no stress (NS). We found that SI significantly decreased the number of tumor-bearing mice still alive at the end of protocol (28 days), compared to NS mice. Although we did not detect significant changes in primary tumor volume, we observed a significant increase in the endothelial marker CD31 in primary tumors of SI mice and in lung metastases in SI and RRS mice. Survival decline in SI mice was associated with significant decreases in splenic CD8 cells and in activated T cells. From a mechanistic standpoint, RRS increased expression of FOXP3, CXCL-10, and granzyme B in mouse tumors, and the effects were reversed by propranolol. Our data demonstrate that various forms of stress differentially impact adaptive immunity and tumor angiogenesis, and negatively impact survival.</jats:p

Anti-MUC1 Monoclonal Antibody (C595) and Docetaxel Markedly Reduce Tumor Burden and Ascites, and Prolong Survival in an in vivo Ovarian Cancer Model

MUC1 is associated with cellular transformation and tumorigenicity and is considered as an important tumor-associated antigen (TAA) for cancer therapy. We previously reported that anti-MUC1 monoclonal antibody C595 (MAb C595) plus docetaxel (DTX) increased efficacy of DTX alone and caused cultured human epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells to undergo apoptosis. To further study the mechanisms of this combination-mediated apoptosis, we investigated the effectiveness of this combination therapy in vivo in an intraperitoneal (i.p.) EOC mouse model. OVCAR-3 cells were implanted intraperitoneally in female athymic nude mice and allowed to grow tumor and ascites. Mice were then treated with single MAb C595, DTX, combination test (MAb C595 and DTX), combination control (negative MAb IgG3 and DTX) or vehicle control i.p for 3 weeks. Treated mice were killed 4 weeks post-treatment. Ascites volume, tumor weight, CA125 levels from ascites and survival of animals were assessed. The expression of MUC1, CD31, Ki-67, TUNEL and apoptotic proteins in tumor xenografts was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. MAb C595 alone inhibited i.p. tumor growth and ascites production in a dose-dependent manner but did not obviously prevent tumor development. However, combination test significantly reduced ascites volume, tumor growth and metastases, CA125 levels in ascites and improved survival of treated mice compared with single agent-treated mice, combination control or vehicle control-treated mice (P<0.05). The data was in a good agreement with that from cultured cells in vitro. The mechanisms behind the observed effects could be through targeting MUC1 antigens, inhibition of tumor angiogenesis, and induction of apoptosis. Our results suggest that this combination approach can effectively reduce tumor burden and ascites, prolong survival of animals through induction of tumor apoptosis and necrosis, and may provide a potential therapy for advanced metastatic EOC
