    The First Orbital Period for a Dwarf Nova in a Globular Cluster: V101 in M5

    We report the first orbital period determination for a Dwarf Nova (DN) in a glubular cluster: V101 in M5 has a period of 5.796 +- 0.036 hours. We derived this period from I-band photometry acquired with the Calypso Observatory High Resolution Camera operating with tip-tilt adaptive optics correction. Observations from the South African Astronomical Observatory in the V-band were also analyzed and exhibit a periodic signal of the same period. This orbital period suggests that V101 has a secondary of mid to late K spectral type with Mv = +8.2 +- 0.5. The predicted spectral type is consistent with previous spectral observations in quiescence which show a fairly red continuum. From the observed minimum brightness of V = 22.5, we derive a distance modulus of (m - M)v = 14.3 +- 0.5 to the DN which supports V101's membership in the globular cluster M5. Measurement of the ellipsoidality effect indicates that the orbital plane of the V101 system is moderately inclined, but not enough to exhibit eclipses.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, 3 table

    The limited utility of electrocardiography variables used to predict arrhythmia in psychotropic drug overdose

    OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between serious arrhythmias in patients with psychotropic drug overdose and electrocardiography (ECG) findings that have been suggested previously to predict this complication. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients with serious arrhythmias (ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia or cardiac arrest) after tricyclic antidepressant overdose or thioridazine overdose were compared with 117 controls with clinically significant overdose matched to each case for the drug ingested. These patients with psychotropic drug overdose had presented for treatment to the Department of Clinical Toxicology, Newcastle and to the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane. The heart rate, the QRS width, the QTc and QT intervals, the QT dispersion, and the R wave and R/S ratios in aVR on the initial ECGs were compared in cases and controls. RESULTS: The cases had taken dothiepin (16 patients), doxepin (six patients), thioridazine (five patients), amitriptyline (five patients), nortriptyline (three patients), imipramine (one patient) and a combination of dothiepin and thioridazine (three patients). In 20 of the 39 patients with arrhythmias, the arrhythmia had been a presumed ventricular tachycardia. Of the other 19 patients, 15 patients had a supraventricular tachycardia, two patients had cardiac arrests (one asystole, one without ECG monitoring) and two patients had insufficient data recorded to make classification of the arrhythmias possible. The QRS was ≥ 100 ms in 82% of cases but also in 76% of controls. QRS ≥ 160 ms had a sensitivity of only 13% and occurred in 2% of controls. QRS > 120 ms, QTc > 500 and the R/S ratio in aVR appeared to have a stronger association with the occurrence of arrhythmia: QRS > 120 ms (odds ratio [OR], 3.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.46–8.68), QTc > 500 (OR, 3.07; 95% CI, 1.33–7.07), and R/S ratio in aVR > 0.7 (OR, 16; 95% CI, 3.47–74). Excluding thioridazine overdoses and performing the analysis for tricyclic antidepressant overdoses alone gave increased odds ratios for QRS > 120 ms (OR, 4.83; 95% CI, 1.73–13.5) and QTc > 500 (OR, 4.5; 95% CI, 1.56–13) but had little effect on that for the R/S ratio in aVR > 0.7 (OR, 14.5; 95% CI, 3.10–68). CONCLUSION: ECG measurements were generally weakly related to the occurrence of arrhythmia and should not be used as the sole criteria for risk assessment in tricyclic antidepressant overdose. The frequently recommended practice of using either QRS ≥ 100 ms or QRS ≥ 160 ms to predict arrhythmias is not supported by our study. R/S ratio in aVR > 0.7 was most strongly related to arrhythmia but had estimated positive and negative predictive values of only 41% and 95%, respectively. The use of these specific predictors in other drug overdoses is not recommended without specific studies

    Minute-of-Arc Resolution Gamma ray Imaging Experiment—MARGIE

    MARGIE (Minute-of-Arc Resolution Gamma-ray Imaging Experiment) is a large area(∼104 cm2), wide field-of-view (∼1 sr), hard X-ray/gamma-ray (∼20–600 keV) coded-mask imaging telescope capable of performing a sensitive survey of both steady and transient cosmic sources. MARGIE has been selected for a NASA mission-concept study for an Ultra Long Duration (100 day) Balloon flight. We describe our program to develop the instrument based on new detector technology of either cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) semiconductors or pixellated cesium iodide (CsI) scintillators viewed by fast-timing bi-directional charge-coupled devices (CCDs). The primary scientific objectives are to image faint Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) in near-real-time at the low intensity (high-redshift) end of the logN-logS distribution, thereby extending the sensitivity of present observations, and to perform a wide field survey of the Galactic plane

    MARGIE: A gamma-ray burst ultra-long duration balloon mission

    We are designing MARGIE as a 100 day ULDB mission to: a) detect and localize gamma-ray bursts; and b) survey the hard X-ray sky. MARGIE will consist of one small field-of-view (FOV) and four large FOV coded mask modules mounted on a balloon gondola. The burst position will be calculated onboard and disseminated in near-real time, while information about every count will be telemetered to the ground for further analysis. In a 100-day mission we will localize ∼40 bursts with peak photon fluxes from 0.14 to ∼5 ph cm−2 s−1 using 1 s integrations; the typical localization resolution will be better than ∼2 arcminutes

    Structural Activity Relationship Study on Dual PLK1 /BRD4 Inhibitor, BI- 2536

    Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1) and BRD4 are two different therapeutic targets in cancer drug discovery. Recently it has been reported that PLK1 inhibitor, BI-2536, is also a potent inhibitor of BRD4. The simultaneous inhibition of PLK1 and BRD4 by a single drug molecule is interesting because this could lead to the development of effective therapeutic strategy for different types of disease conditions in which PLK1 and BRD4 are implicated. Structural activity relationship studies has been carried out on BI-2536 to generate analogs with enhanced dual inhibitory activity against BRD4 and PLK1 as well as to render the molecule selective to one target over the other. UMB101 and 160 have been found to exhibit enhanced dual inhibitory activity with selectivity fold of less than 30, UMB160 being the most potent dual-kinase bromodomain inhibitor (BRD4 IC50 = 28 nM, PLK1 IC50 = 40 nM). UMB131 was found to be the most selective PLK1 inhibitor over BRD4
