There are No Causality Problems for Fermi's Two Atom System
A repeatedly discussed gedanken experiment, proposed by Fermi to check
Einstein causality, is reconsidered. It is shown that, contrary to a recent
statement made by Hegerfeldt, there appears no causality paradoxon in a proper
theoretical description of the experiment.Comment: 6 pages, latex, DESY 94-02
Deformations of Fermionic Quantum Field Theories and Integrable Models
Considering the model of a scalar massive Fermion, it is shown that by means
of deformation techniques it is possible to obtain all integrable quantum field
theoretic models on two-dimensional Minkowski space which have factorizing
S-matrices corresponding to two-particle scattering functions S_2 satisfying
S_2(0) = -1. Among these models there is for example the Sinh-Gordon model. Our
analysis provides a complement to recent developments regarding deformations of
quantum field theories. The deformed model is investigated also in higher
dimensions. In particular, locality and covariance properties are analyzed.Comment: 20 page
On the equivalence of two deformation schemes in quantum field theory
Two recent deformation schemes for quantum field theories on the
two-dimensional Minkowski space, making use of deformed field operators and
Longo-Witten endomorphisms, respectively, are shown to be equivalent.Comment: 14 pages, no figure. The final version is available under Open

Space shuttle: Stability and control effectiveness of the MDAC parametric delta canard booster at Mach 0.38. Volume 1: Canard parametric variations
A 0.015 scale model of a modified version of the MDAC space shuttle booster was tested in the Naval Ship Research and Development Center 7 x 10 foot transonic wind tunnel, to obtain force, static stability, and control effectiveness data. Data were obtained for a cruise Mach Number of 0.38, altitude of 10,000 ft, and Reynolds Number per foot of approximately 2 x one million. The model was tested through an angle of attack range of -4 deg to 15 deg at zero degree angle of sideslip, and at an angle of sideslip range of -6 deg to 6 deg at fixed angles of attack of 0 deg, 6 deg, and 15 deg. Other test variables were elevon deflections, canard deflections, aileron deflections, rudder deflections, wing dihedral angle, canard incidence angle, wing incidence angle, canard position, wing position, wing and canard control flap size and dorsal fin size
Charged sectors, spin and statistics in quantum field theory on curved spacetimes
The first part of this paper extends the Doplicher-Haag-Roberts theory of
superselection sectors to quantum field theory on arbitrary globally hyperbolic
spacetimes. The statistics of a superselection sector may be defined as in flat
spacetime and each charge has a conjugate charge when the spacetime possesses
non-compact Cauchy surfaces. In this case, the field net and the gauge group
can be constructed as in Minkowski spacetime.
The second part of this paper derives spin-statistics theorems on spacetimes
with appropriate symmetries. Two situations are considered: First, if the
spacetime has a bifurcate Killing horizon, as is the case in the presence of
black holes, then restricting the observables to the Killing horizon together
with "modular covariance" for the Killing flow yields a conformally covariant
quantum field theory on the circle and a conformal spin-statistics theorem for
charged sectors localizable on the Killing horizon. Secondly, if the spacetime
has a rotation and PT symmetry like the Schwarzschild-Kruskal black holes,
"geometric modular action" of the rotational symmetry leads to a
spin-statistics theorem for charged covariant sectors where the spin is defined
via the SU(2)-covering of the spatial rotation group SO(3).Comment: latex2e, 73 page
The second law of thermodynamics, TCP, and Einstein causality in anti-de Sitter space-time
If the vacuum is passive for uniformly accelerated observers in anti-de
Sitter space-time (i.e. cannot be used by them to operate a "perpetuum
mobile"), they will (a) register a universal value of the Hawking-Unruh
temperature, (b) discover a TCP symmetry, and (c) find that observables in
complementary wedge-shaped regions are commensurable (local) in the vacuum
state. These results are model independent and hold in any theory which is
compatible with some weak notion of space-time localization.Comment: 8 pages, slightly improved results, minor changes in the expository

Wedge-Local Quantum Fields and Noncommutative Minkowski Space
Within the setting of a recently proposed model of quantum fields on
noncommutative Minkowski spacetime, the consequences of the consistent
application of the proper, untwisted Poincare group as the symmetry group are
investigated. The emergent model contains an infinite family of fields which
are labelled by different noncommutativity parameters, and related to each
other by Lorentz transformations. The relative localization properties of these
fields are investigated, and it is shown that to each field one can assign a
wedge-shaped localization region of Minkowski space. This assignment is
consistent with the principles of covariance and locality, i.e. fields
localized in spacelike separated wedges commute.
Regarding the model as a non-local, but wedge-local, quantum field theory on
ordinary (commutative) Minkowski spacetime, it is possible to determine
two-particle S-matrix elements, which turn out to be non-trivial. Some partial
negative results concerning the existence of observables with sharper
localization properties are also obtained.Comment: Version to appear in JHEP, 27 page
