From fertility rituals to mining companies: eco-cultural issues and land rights in Oksapmin

This paper describes the Oksapmin representations of land ownership related to the frame of the water use permit payment process, engaged by Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) as a consequence of the ecological impact of the mine operations on the Lagaip-Strickland basin. Even if the Oksapmin society has been fully evangelized during the last two generations, the landowners have recently stressed the pre-contact exegesis in the claims against that foreign mining company. In this essay the author formulates the hypothesis that the claims to the former animist beliefs may be a social strategy to manage land ownership. This strategy provokes, on the side of private companies, a monetary compensation for the «eco-cultural» impact of mining operations. The land issues focus today on the rediscovery of tradition in order to integrate it to modernity. Tradition then acquires a new original rule in contemporary society. The water spirits and the river sacred sites are re-interpreted and perceived as the guardians of land rights, held by mythical actors at the beginning of time.Cet article traite des représentations oksapmin de la propriété foncière en relation avec le paiement des compensations liées au permis d’usage des eaux engagées par Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) comme une conséquence de l’impact écologique des opérations de cette compagnie sur le bassin riverain du Lagaip-Strickland. Malgré le fait que la communauté oksapmin soit complètement évangélisée depuis les deux dernières générations, les propriétaires fonciers ont récemment mis en valeur l’exégèse pré-contact dans les récriminations qui les opposent aux compagnies minières étrangères. Dans cet article, l’auteur avance l’hypothèse que le retour à la revendication des anciennes croyances animistes soit une stratégie sociale pour gérer les droits fonciers. Cette stratégie entraîne en fait, de la part des compagnies privées, un dédommagement financier pour l’impact écologique et culturel des opérations minières. Poussés par les enjeux fonciers, les Oksapmin tendent aujourd’hui à redécouvrir la tradition pour l’intégrer à la modernité. La tradition retrouve ici un rôle nouveau et original. Laser Irradiation of a Bio-Waste Derived Carbon Unlocks Performance Enhancement in Secondary Lithium Batteries

Pyrolyzed carbons from bio-waste sources are renewable nanomaterials for sustainable negative electrodes in Li- and Na-ion batteries. Here, carbon derived from a hazelnut shell has been obtained by hydrothermal processing of the bio-waste followed by thermal treatments and laser irradiation in liquid. A non-focused nanosecond pulsed laser source has been used to irradiate pyrolyzed carbon particles suspended in acetonitrile to modify the surface and morphology. Morphological, structural, and compositional changes have been investigated by microscopy, spectroscopy, and diffraction to compare the materials properties after thermal treatments as well as before and after the irradiation. Laser irradiation in acetonitrile induces remarkable alteration in the nanomorphology, increase in the surface area and nitrogen enrichment of the carbon surfaces. These materials alterations are beneficial for the electrochemical performance in lithium half cells as proved by galvanostatic cycling at room temperature

Where anthropologists fear to tread: Notes and queries on anthropology and consultancy, inspired by a fieldwork experience

International audienceMore and more, anthropologists are recruited as consultants by government departments, companies or as observers of development processes in their field areas generally. Although these roles can be very gratifying, they can create ambiguous situations for the anthropologists who find that new pressures and responsibilities are placed upon them for which their training did not prepare them. This volume explores some of the problems, opportunities, issues, debates, and dilemmas surrounding these roles. The geographic focus of the studies is Papua New Guinea, but the topic and its importance apply widely through the world, for example, Africa, South America, Australia, and the Pacific in general, as well as in relation to indigenous groups in Canada and elsewhere. All the authors have first-hand experience and they address these new pressures and responsibilities of anthropological research. The book's chapters are written in a way that combines scholarship with a style accessible to general readers
