    Unsupervised decoding of long-term, naturalistic human neural recordings with automated video and audio annotations

    Fully automated decoding of human activities and intentions from direct neural recordings is a tantalizing challenge in brain-computer interfacing. Most ongoing efforts have focused on training decoders on specific, stereotyped tasks in laboratory settings. Implementing brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in natural settings requires adaptive strategies and scalable algorithms that require minimal supervision. Here we propose an unsupervised approach to decoding neural states from human brain recordings acquired in a naturalistic context. We demonstrate our approach on continuous long-term electrocorticographic (ECoG) data recorded over many days from the brain surface of subjects in a hospital room, with simultaneous audio and video recordings. We first discovered clusters in high-dimensional ECoG recordings and then annotated coherent clusters using speech and movement labels extracted automatically from audio and video recordings. To our knowledge, this represents the first time techniques from computer vision and speech processing have been used for natural ECoG decoding. Our results show that our unsupervised approach can discover distinct behaviors from ECoG data, including moving, speaking and resting. We verify the accuracy of our approach by comparing to manual annotations. Projecting the discovered cluster centers back onto the brain, this technique opens the door to automated functional brain mapping in natural settings

    An assessment of the application of ultrasound in the processing of ready-to-eat whole brown crab (Cancer pagurus)

    This study assesses the potential of incorporating ultrasound as a processing aid in the production of whole cooked brown crab (Cancer pagurus). The FDA recommended heat treatment to reduce Listeria monocytogenes by 6 log10 cycles in this product is a F70 7.5 of 2 min. An equivalent F value was applied at 75 °C in presence and absence of ultrasound in water alone or in water with 5% w/v NaCl added. Heat penetration, turbidity and conductivity of the cook water and also salt and moisture content of the crab meat (white and brown) were determined. Ultrasound assisted cooking allowed a reduction of the cooking time by up to 15% while still maintaining an F70 7.5 of 2 min. Ultrasound also enhanced the rate and total amount of compounds released from the crab, which suggests that crabs cooked in the presence of ultrasound would be expected to be cleaner. Ultrasound also proved to be effective in reducing the salt content but hardly affected the final moisture content of the crab meat

    Femtosecond Laser-Induced Crystallization of Amorphous Silicon Thin Films under a Thin Molybdenum Layer

    A new process to crystallize amorphous silicon without melting and the generation of excessive heating of nearby components is presented. We propose the addition of a molybdenum layer to improve the quality of the laser-induced crystallization over that achieved by direct irradiation of silicon alone. The advantages are that it allows the control of crystallite size by varying the applied fluence of a near-infrared femtosecond laser. It offers two fluence regimes for nanocrystallization and polycrystallization with small and large crystallite sizes, respectively. The high repetition rate of the compact femtosecond laser source enables high-quality crystallization over large areas. In this proposed method, a multilayer structure is irradiated with a single femtosecond laser pulse. The multilayer structure includes a substrate, a target amorphous Si layer coated with an additional molybdenum thin film. The Si layer is crystallized by irradiating the Mo layer at different fluence regimes. The transfer of energy from the irradiated Mo layer to the Si film causes the crystallization of amorphous Si at low temperatures (∼700 K). Numerical simulations were carried out to estimate the electron and lattice temperatures for different fluence regimes using a two-temperature model. The roles of direct phonon transport and inelastic electron scattering at the Mo-Si interface were considered in the transfer of energy from the Mo to the Si film. The simulations confirm the experimental evidence that amorphous Si was crystallized in an all-solid-state process at temperatures lower than the melting point of Si, which is consistent with the results from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman. The formation of crystallized Si with controlled crystallite size after laser treatment can lead to longer mean free paths for carriers and increased electrical conductivity

    In vivo pharmacology and anti-tumour evaluation of the tyrphostin tyrosine kinase inhibitor RG13022.

    Amplification and increased expression of many growth factor receptors, including the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), has been observed in human tumours. One therapeutic strategy for overcoming EGF autocrine control of tumour growth is inhibition of EGFR protein tyrosine kinase (PTK). A series of low molecular weight molecules have been identified which inhibit the EGFR PTK in vitro and demonstrate antiproliferative activity against human cancer cell lines with high expression of EGFR. A significant growth delay in squamous cancer xenografts has been reported for one of these compounds, the tyrphostin RG13022. Based on these encouraging results, we sought to confirm the activity of RG13022 in vivo and relate the effects to the in vivo plasma disposition. RG13022 and three additional peaks were detected by HPLC following intraperitoneal administration of 20 mg kg-1 RG13022 in MF1 nu/nu mice. RG13022 demonstrated rapid biexponential elimination from plasma with a terminal half-life of 50.4 min. RG13022 plasma concentrations were less than 1 microM by 20 min post injection. A primary product was identified as the geometrical isomer (E)-RG13022. Both RG13022 and its geometrical isomer inhibited DNA synthesis in HN5 cells after a 24 h in vitro incubation (IC50 = 11 microM and 38 microM respectively). Neither RG13022 nor its geometrical isomer displayed significant cytotoxicity. RG13022 had no influence on the growth of HN5 tumours when administered chronically, starting either on the day of tumour inoculation or after establishment of tumour xenografts. The rapid in vivo elimination of RG13022 has potential significance to the development of this and other related tyrphostin tyrosine kinase inhibitors, as plasma concentrations fell below that required for in vitro activity by 20 min post injection. The lack of in vivo tumour growth delay suggests that a more optimal administration schedule for RG13022 would include more frequent injections or continuous administration. An improved formulation for RG13022 is therefore required before further development of this or other similar protein tyrosine kinase inhibitors can be made. Alternative strategies should also be sought which display longer lasting in vivo exposures

    Magnetic Order in the Double Exchange Model in Infinite Dimensions

    We studied magnetic properties of the double exchange (DE) model with S=1/2 localized spins at T=0, using exact diagonalization in the framework of the dynamical mean field theory. Obtained phase diagram contains ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. Comparing the phase diagram with that of the DE model with classical localized spins, we found that the quantum fluctuations of localized spins partly destabilize the ferromagnetism and expand the paramagnetic phase region. We found that phase separations occur between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases as well as the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic ones.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX, 9 eps-figure

    Spin Wave Theory of Double Exchange Ferromagnets

    We construct the 1/S spin-wave expansion for double exchange ferromagnets at T=0. It is assumed that the value of Hund's rule coupling, J_H, is sufficiently large, resulting in a fully saturated, ferromagnetic half-metallic ground state. We evaluate corrections to the magnon dispersion law, and we also find that, in contrast to earlier statements in the literature, magnon-electron scattering does give rise to spin wave damping. We analyse the momentum dependence of these quantities and discuss the experimental implications for colossal magnetoresistance compounds.Comment: 4 pages, Latex-Revtex, 2 PostScript figures.     Electronic structure and resistivity of the double exchange model

    The double exchange (DE) model with quantum local spins S is studied; an equation of motion approach is used and decoupling approximations analogous to Hubbard's are made. Our approximate one-electron Green function G is exact in the atomic limit of zero bandwidth for all S and band filling n, and as n->0 reduces to a dynamical coherent potential approximation (CPA) due to Kubo; we regard our approximation as a many-body generalisation of Kubo's CPA. G is calculated self-consistently for general S in the paramagnetic state and for S=1/2 in a state of arbitrary magnetization. The electronic structure is investigated and four bands per spin are obtained centred on the atomic limit peaks of the spectral function. A resistivity formula appropriate to the model is derived from the Kubo formula and the paramagnetic state resistivity rho is calculated; insulating states are correctly obtained at n=0 and n=1 for strong Hund coupling. Our prediction for rho is much too small to be consistent with experiments on manganites so we agree with Millis et al that the bare DE model is inadequate.     Farming on the edge: farmer attitudes to bovine tuberculosis in newly endemic areas

    Defra's recent strategy to eradicate bovine tuberculosis (bTB) establishes three spatial zones: high-risk areas (HRAs) and low-risk areas, and an area referred to as ‘the edge’, which marks the areas where infection is spreading outwards from the HRA. Little is known about farmers in the edge area, their attitudes towards bTB and their farming practices. This paper examines farmers’ practices and attitudes towards bTB in standardised epidemiologically defined areas. A survey was developed to collect data on farmer attitudes, behaviours, practices and environmental conditions as part of an interdisciplinary analysis of bTB risk factors. Survey items were developed from a literature review and focus groups with vets and farmers in different locations within the edge area. A case-control sampling framework was adopted with farms sampled from areas identified as recently endemic for bTB. 347 farmers participated in the survey including 117 with bTB, representing a 70 percent response rate. Results show that farmers believe they are unable to do anything about bTB but are keen for the government intervention to help control the spread of bTB
