Measures of happiness: Which to choose?
Happiness is defined as the subjective enjoyment of oneâs life as a whole, also
called âlife-satisfaction.â Two components of happiness are distinguished; an affective
component (how well one feels most of the time) and a cognitive component (the degree to
which one perceived to get what one wants from life). In this chapter, I present an overview
of valid measures of these concepts, drawing on the âCollection of Happiness Measuresâ of
the âWorld Database of Happinessâ. To date (2016), this collection includes more than twothousand
measures of happiness, mostly single direct questions. Links in this text lead to
detail about these measures and the studies in this chapter, I describe the differences and
discuss their strengths and weaknesse
Tandem synthesis of alternating polyesters from renewable resources
The vast majority of commodity materials are obtained from petrochemical feedstocks. These resources will plausibly be depleted within the next 100 years, and the peak in global oil production is estimated to occur within the next few decades. In this regard, biomass represents an abundant carbon-neutral renewable resource for the production of polymers. Here we report a new strategy, based on tandem catalysis, to obtain renewable materials. Commercially available complexes are found to be efficient catalysts for alternating polyesters from the cyclization of dicarboxylic acids followed by alternating copolymerization of the resulting anhydrides with epoxides. This operationally simple method is an attractive strategy for the production of new biodegradable polyesters
Metrics of Subjective Well-Being: Limits and Improvements
This volume analyses the quantification of the effect of factors measuring subjective well-being, and in particular on the metrics applied. With happiness studies flourishing over the last decades, both in number of publications as well as in their exposure, researchers working in this field are aware of potential weaknesses and pitfalls of these metrics. Contributors to this volume reflect on different factors influencing quantification, such as scale size, wording, language, biases, and cultural comparability in order to raise awareness on the tools and on their conditions of use
