Vacuum structure of pure gauge theories on the lattice
We present results from simulations on two aspects of quark confinement in
the pure gauge sector. First is the calculation of the profile of the flux tube
connecting a static pair in . By using the Michael sum rules
as a constraint we give evidence that the energy density at the center of the
flux tube goes to a constant as a function of quark separation. Slow variation
of the width and energy density is not ruled out. Secondly in the confined
phase of lattice we calculate the curl of the magnetic monopole current
and show that the dual London equation is satisfied and that the electric
fluxoid is quantized.Comment: 14 pages (no figures, please request preprint), LSU HE NO. 130-199
Taxation as a real incentive for land conservation
The objective of the dissertation is to investigate the opportunity to apply taxation incentives to promote land conservation in South Africa. This dissertation was conducted by means of a critical analysis of current legislation and data available in search of a suggested solution to finding appropriate tax incentives to encourage land conservation. In order to limit the scope of the research, a number of assumptions were made. Conflicting viewpoints underlying certain of these assumptions are discussed
Evidence against correlations between nuclear decay rates and Earth-Sun distance
We have reexamined our previously published data to search for evidence of
correlations between the rates for the alpha, beta-minus, beta-plus, and
electron-capture decays of 22Na, 44Ti, 108Agm, 121Snm, 133Ba, and 241Am and the
Earth-Sun distance. We find no evidence for such correlations and set limits on
the possible amplitudes of such correlations substantially smaller than those
observed in previous experiments
A Longitudinal Perspective Regarding the Use of VLEs by Higher Education Institutions in the United Kingdom
The version uploaded is the final copy that was sent to the publishers.Between 2001 and 2005 UCISA and JISC conducted surveys into issues relating to the acquisition, use, management and support of Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs). A number of other studies provide information on these issues during this period. Together they provide a substantial body of evidence that allows an analysis of the factors that enhance or inhibit institutional take-up and support provision for VLEs within the UK higher education sector.
There is clear evidence of increasing use of VLEs but not of widespread change in pedagogic practice. VLE management is increasingly centralised in all matters considered strategic, with dedicated devolvement occurring for a range of support activities. Differences in practice exist between old and new universities. There is in general negligible interest in standards or in institutional collaboration
Impact of Simulated 1/f Noise for HI Intensity Mapping Experiments
Cosmology has entered an era where the experimental limitations are not due
to instrumental sensitivity but instead due to inherent systematic
uncertainties in the instrumentation and data analysis methods. The field of HI
intensity mapping (IM) is still maturing, however early attempts are already
systematics limited. One such systematic limitation is 1/f noise, which largely
originates within the instrumentation and manifests as multiplicative gain
fluctuations. To date there has been little discussion about the possible
impact of 1/f noise on upcoming single-dish HI IM experiments such as BINGO,
FAST or SKA. Presented in this work are Monte-Carlo end-to-end simulations of a
30 day HI IM survey using the SKA-MID array covering a bandwidth of 950 and
1410 MHz. These simulations extend 1/f noise models to include not just
temporal fluctuations but also correlated gain fluctuations across the receiver
bandpass. The power spectral density of the spectral gain fluctuations are
modelled as a power-law, and characterised by a parameter . It is found
that the degree of 1/f noise frequency correlation will be critical to the
success of HI IM experiments. Small values of ( < 0.25) or high
correlation is preferred as this is more easily removed using current component
separation techniques. The spectral index of temporal fluctuations ()
is also found to have a large impact on signal-to-noise. Telescope slew speed
has a smaller impact, and a scan speed of 1 deg s should be sufficient
for a HI IM survey with the SKA.Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures, 2 table
Complex trauma and the influence of emotional regulation and interpersonal problems: a review of Complex-PTSD and an empirical study in a prison setting
Background
The effects of prolonged, interpersonal trauma have long been recognised. Such traumatic
events can lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but are also
associated with a range of other psychological difficulties. The forthcoming ICD-11 has
proposed the inclusion of a new diagnostic category to cover such trauma reactions, named
complex-PTSD (CPTSD). CPTSD is conceptualised as including the core elements of PTSD
with additional difficulties with affect regulation, self-concept, interpersonal relationships.
This thesis presents a systematic review of the research into the proposed CPTSD diagnosis.
In addition, this thesis investigates the association between difficulties with emotional
regulation, interpersonal problems and PTSD symptoms in a group of male prisoners, and a
male community sample.
Aims
This project aims to investigate whether the proposed CPTSD diagnosis accurately describes
the difficulties seen following complex trauma, and examines whether it is best to view
CPTSD is different from exiting disorders, including PTSD and borderline personality
disorder (BPD). In addition, it aims to investigate the association between difficulties with
emotional regulation, interpersonal problems and PTSD among men in prison.
Methods
We systematically assessed and synthesised the available research regarding the proposed
ICD-11 CPTSD diagnosis. In the second paper, data regarding PTSD, emotional regulation,
and interpersonal problems were collected from HMP Glenochil, a male-only prison in
Scotland (n=51), and matched to an existing community data set (n=46).
Results
The results of the systematic review provide partial support for the factorial validity of
CPTSD. In addition, they indicate that CPTSD can be conceptualised as distinct from both
PTSD and BPD, and that CPTSD is more closely related to prolonged interpersonal trauma
than PTSD. However, there is overlap between PTSD and CPTSD in terms of both
symptomology and aetiology. The results also indicate high levels of PTSD among male
prisoners. In addition, PTSD was found to be strongly associated difficulties with emotional
regulation, but not interpersonal problems, in the forensic sample. In the community sample
emotional regulation was a less strong predictor of PTSD symptoms, and both emotional
regulation, and interpersonal problems were associated with the severity of PTSD. Conclusions
This thesis supports the inclusion of CPTSD as a distinct diagnostic entity. Inclusion of
CPTSD may allow survivors a better understanding of the aetiology of their difficulties, and
may initiate research into effective ways of working with individuals who have experienced
complex-trauma. I addition, they demonstrate the need for trauma-informed prison services,
which prioritise the development of emotional regulation strategies in recovery and
rehabilitation
Competitive advantage through relationships in ABSA Private Bank
This study investigates the dynamic and challenging affluent market of the South African banking sector. An evolution in client demands has created a need for a more exclusive banking solution known as private banking. The research project takes place in the ABSA Private Bank Gauteng Division, the population of which are private bankers and financial planners involved in the actual client facing engagements. Through a questionnaire sampling 40 client facing staff, responses were gathered followed by deeper investigation into the objectives through interviews of both the direct reporting lines in each of the suites in the province, including the provincial executive.Graduate School of Business LeadershipM.B.A
