Furrow application of insecticide as a method of controlling wireworms in potato land
Three methods of applying insecticides for the control of the wireworm, Agriotes obscurus L.. were tested using fonofos and terbufos. Most treatments gave significantly more marketable tubers than the control. The furrow treatment gave more consistent results than broadcast or side-dress and, at 1.1 or 2.2 kg a.i/ha, gave control equal to, or better than, the broadcast treatment at 5.6 kg a.i./ha. Analyses by gas chromatography using a flame photometric detector for residues in potatoes grown in treated soil showed residues to be less than 0.02 ppm

More about orbitally excited hadrons from lattice QCD
This is a second paper describing the calculation of spectroscopy for
orbitally excited states from lattice simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics.
New features include higher statistics for P-wave systems and first results for
the spectroscopy of D-wave mesons and baryons, for relatively heavy quark
masses. We parameterize the Coulomb gauge wave functions for P-wave and D-wave
systems and compare them to those of their corresponding S-wave states.Comment: 21 pages plus 14 figs, 3 include
Theoretical studies of the historical development of the accounting discipline: a review and evidence
Many existing studies of the development of accounting thought have either been atheoretical or have adopted Kuhn's model of scientific growth. The limitations of this 35-year-old model are discussed. Four different general neo-Kuhnian models of scholarly knowledge development are reviewed and compared with reference to an analytical matrix. The models are found to be mutually consistent, with each focusing on a different aspect of development. A composite model is proposed. Based on a hand-crafted database, author co-citation analysis is used to map empirically the entire literature structure of the accounting discipline during two consecutive time periods, 1972â81 and 1982â90. The changing structure of the accounting literature is interpreted using the proposed composite model of scholarly knowledge development
A polarized neutron-scattering study of the Cooper-pair moment in Sr2RuO4
We report a study of the magnetization density in the mixed state of the
unconventional superconductor S2RuO4. On entering the superconducting state we
find no change in the magnitude or distribution of the induced moment for a
magnetic field of 1 Tesla applied within the RuO2 planes. Our results are
consistent with a spin-triplet Cooper pairing with spins lying in the basal
plane. This is in contrast with similar experiments performed on conventional
and high-Tc superconductors.Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letter
Modelling chemistry in the nocturnal boundary layer above tropical rainforest and a generalised effective nocturnal ozone deposition velocity for sub-ppbv NOx conditions
Measurements of atmospheric composition have been made over a remote rainforest landscape. A box model has previously been demonstrated to model the observed daytime chemistry well. However the box model is unable to explain the nocturnal measurements of relatively high [NO] and [O3], but relatively low observed [NO2]. It is shown that a one-dimensional (1-D) column model with simple O3 -NOx chemistry and a simple representation of vertical transport is able to explain the observed nocturnal concentrations and predict the likely vertical profiles of these species in the nocturnal boundary layer (NBL). Concentrations of tracers carried over from the end of the night can affect the atmospheric chemistry of the following day. To ascertain the anomaly introduced by using the box model to represent the NBL, vertically-averaged NBL concentrations at the end of the night are compared between the 1-D model and the box model. It is found that, under low to medium [NOx] conditions (NOx <1 ppbv), a simple parametrisation can be used to modify the box model deposition velocity of ozone, in order to achieve good agreement between the box and 1-D models for these end-of-night concentrations of NOx and O3. This parametrisation would could also be used in global climate-chemistry models with limited vertical resolution near the surface. Box-model results for the following day differ significantly if this effective nocturnal deposition velocity for ozone is implemented; for instance, there is a 9% increase in the following dayâs peak ozone concentration. However under medium to high [NOx] conditions (NOx > 1 ppbv), the effect on the chemistry due to the vertical distribution of the species means no box model can adequately represent chemistry in the NBL without modifying reaction rate constants
Chromomagnetic Catalysis of Color Superconductivity in a (2+1)-dimensional NJL Model
The influence of a constant uniform external chromomagnetic field on the
formation of color superconductivity has been investigated. The consideration
was performed in the framework of a (2+1)-dimensional Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model
with two different four-fermionic structures responsible for condensates. In particular, it was shown that there exists a
critical value of the external chromomagnetic field such that at
a nonvanishing diquark condensate is dynamically created (the so-called
chromomagnetic catalysis effect of color superconductivity). Moreover, external
chromomagnetic fields may in some cases enhance the diquark condensate of color
superconductivity.Comment: 32 pages, 2 figures, revte
