Limit cycles of a flexible shaft with hydrodynamic journal bearings in unstable regimes
A symmetric 3 mass rotor supported on hydrodynamic bearings is described. An approximate method of representing finite bearings is used to calculate bearing forces. As the method sums forces from a number of independent circular lobes lemon 3 and 4 lobe bearings are taken into account. The calculations are based on an axial groove bearing. Linear analysis precedes nonlinear simulation of some unstable conditions. The demonstration of small limit cycles suggests that necessarily flexible rotors e.g., helicopter tail rotors, may be practical without either tilt pad bearings or external dampers
Quantum atom optics with fermions from molecular dissociation
We study a fermionic atom optics counterpart of parametric down-conversion
with photons. This can be realized through dissociation of a Bose-Einstein
condensate of molecular dimers consisting of fermionic atoms. We present a
theoretical model describing the quantum dynamics of dissociation and find
analytic solutions for mode occupancies and atomic pair correlations, valid in
the short time limit. The solutions are used to identify upper bounds for the
correlation functions, which are applicable to any fermionic system and

Complex Instantons and Charged Rotating Black Hole Pair Creation
We consider the general process of pair-creation of charged rotating black
holes. We find that instantons which describe this process are necessarily
complex due to regularity requirements. However their associated probabilities
are real, and fully consistent with the interpretation that the entropy of a
charged rotating black hole is the logarithm of the number of its quantum

Improved definition of crustal magnetic anomalies for MAGSAT data
The routine correction of MAGSAT vector magnetometer data for external field effects such as the ring current and the daily variation by filtering long wavelength harmonics from the data is described. Separation of fields due to low altitude sources from those caused by high altitude sources is affected by means of dual harmonic expansions in the solution of Dirichlet's problem. This regression/harmonic filter procedure is applied on an orbit by orbit basis, and initial tests on MAGSAT data from orbit 1176 show reduction in external field residuals by 24.33 nT RMS in the horizontal component, and 10.95 nT RMS in the radial component
Black Hole Pair Creation and the Entropy Factor
It is shown that in the instanton approximation the rate of creation of black
holes is always enhanced by a factor of the exponential of the black hole
entropy relative to the rate of creation of compact matter distributions
(stars). This result holds for any generally covariant theory of gravitational
and matter fields that can be expressed in Hamiltonian form. It generalizes the
result obtained previously for the pair creation of magnetically charged black
holes by a magnetic field in Einstein--Maxwell theory. The particular example
of pair creation of electrically charged black holes by an electric field in

Mixed valency in cerium oxide crystallographic phases: Determination of valence of the different cerium sites by the bond valence method
We have applied the bond valence method to cerium oxides to determine the
oxidation states of the Ce ion at the various site symmetries of the crystals.
The crystals studied include cerium dioxide and the two sesquioxides along with
some selected intermediate phases which are crystallographically well
characterized. Our results indicate that cerium dioxide has a mixed-valence
ground state with an f-electron population on the Ce site of 0.27 while both
the A- and C-sesquioxides have a nearly pure f^1 configuration. The Ce sites in
most of the intermediate oxides have non-integral valences. Furthermore, many
of these valences are different from the values predicted from a naive
consideration of the stoichiometric valence of the compound
Vectorcardiographic changes during extended space flight
To assess the effects of space flight on cardiac electrical properties, vectorcardiograms were taken on the 9 Skylab astronauts during the flights of 28, 59, and 84 days. The Frank lead system was used and observations were made at rest; during 25%, 50% and 75% of maximum exercise; during a short pulse of exercise (150 watts, 2 minutes); and after exercise. Data from 131 in-flight tests were analyzed by computer and compared to preflight and postflight values. Statistically significant increase in QRS vector magnitude (six of nine crewmen); T vector magnitude (five of nine crewmen); and resting PR interval duration (six of nine crewmen) occurred. During exercise the PR interval did not differ from preflight. Exercise heart rates inflight were the same as preflight, but increased in the immediate postflight period. With the exception of the arrhythmias, no deleterious vectorcardiographic changes were observed during the Skylab missions
Applying machine learning to the problem of choosing a heuristic to select the variable ordering for cylindrical algebraic decomposition
Cylindrical algebraic decomposition(CAD) is a key tool in computational
algebraic geometry, particularly for quantifier elimination over real-closed
fields. When using CAD, there is often a choice for the ordering placed on the
variables. This can be important, with some problems infeasible with one
variable ordering but easy with another. Machine learning is the process of
fitting a computer model to a complex function based on properties learned from
measured data. In this paper we use machine learning (specifically a support
vector machine) to select between heuristics for choosing a variable ordering,
outperforming each of the separate heuristics.Comment: 16 page
Quasilocal Energy for a Kerr black hole
The quasilocal energy associated with a constant stationary time slice of the
Kerr spacetime is presented. The calculations are based on a recent proposal
\cite{by} in which quasilocal energy is derived from the Hamiltonian of
spatially bounded gravitational systems. Three different classes of boundary
surfaces for the Kerr slice are considered (constant radius surfaces, round
spheres, and the ergosurface). Their embeddings in both the Kerr slice and flat
three-dimensional space (required as a normalization of the energy) are
analyzed. The energy contained within each surface is explicitly calculated in
the slow rotation regime and its properties discussed in detail. The energy is
a positive, monotonically decreasing function of the boundary surface radius.
It approaches the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass at spatial infinity and
reduces to (twice) the irreducible mass at the horizon of the Kerr black hole.
The expressions possess the correct static limit and include negative
contributions due to gravitational binding. The energy at the ergosurface is
compared with the energies at other surfaces. Finally, the difficulties
involved in an estimation of the energy in the fast rotation regime are

NASTRAN general purpose interface requirements document
This NASTRAN (NASA STRuctural ANalysis) General Purpose Interface Requirements Document (IRD) defines standards for deliverables required of New Capability Contractors (NCCs) and relates these deliverables to the software development cycle. It also defines standards to be followed by NCCs for adding to and modifying the code in the NASTRAN software system and for adding to and modifying the four official NASTRAN manuals: The NASTRAN Theoretical Manual, the NASTRAN User's Manual, The NASTRAN Programmer's Manual, and The NASTRAN Demonstration Problem Manual. It is intended that this General Purpose IRD shall be incorporated by reference in all contracts for a new NASTRAN capability
