Downlink Coverage Analysis in a Heterogeneous Cellular Network

In this paper, we consider the downlink signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) analysis in a heterogeneous cellular network with K tiers. Each tier is characterized by a base-station (BS) arrangement according to a homogeneous Poisson point process with certain BS density, transmission power, random shadow fading factors with arbitrary distribution, arbitrary path-loss exponent and a certain bias towards admitting the mobile-station (MS). The MS associates with the BS that has the maximum SINR under the open access cell association scheme. For such a general setting, we provide an analytical characterization of the coverage probability at the MS.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to IEEE Globecom 2012 - Wireless Communications Symposium on Apr 2, 201

A PRELIMINARY FEASIBILITY FOR ESTABLISHING A MULTI-SPECIES MEAT PROCESSING PLANT IN SOUTHWESTERN NORTH DAKOTA

The number of small commodity livestock slaughter plants in the Upper Northern Plains region continues to decline. Significant factors contributing to this decline include: 1) pressure to consolidate, thereby capturing economies of scale; 2) relatively stringent federal inspection specifications, along with; 3) HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points) requirements. At the same time, consumer demand (markets) for specialty, selected, and exotic meats appears to be growing. For example, the recent market successes in Europe evidenced by the North American Bison Cooperative based in New Rockford, North Dakota. Several alternative livestock producer groups have emerged which include lamb, ratite, elk, deer, goat, poultry, rabbit, specialty beef, and organic livestock. These groups have expressed a need for slaughter and processing facilities to meet market demand. The economic question which then becomes foremost to developing a viable business enterprise is: "What is the critical threshold volume (CTV) of product required to succeed in terms of economic profit?" Specialty livestock is relatively new and production volume small in comparison to established commodity livestock such as cattle or hogs. This fact led researchers to consider the preliminary feasibility of a multi-species processing facility as a means of addressing the expressed need.multi-species, specialty meats, specialty livestock, alternative livestock, economies of scale, HACCP (Hazardous Analysis Critical Control Points), slaughter plants, processing plants, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Agribusiness,

Multi-tier Network Performance Analysis using a Shotgun Cellular System

This paper studies the carrier-to-interference ratio (CIR) and carrier-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (CINR) performance at the mobile station (MS) within a multi-tier network composed of M tiers of wireless networks, with each tier modeled as the homogeneous n-dimensional (n-D, n=1,2, and 3) shotgun cellular system, where the base station (BS) distribution is given by the homogeneous Poisson point process in n-D. The CIR and CINR at the MS in a single tier network are thoroughly analyzed to simplify the analysis of the multi-tier network. For the multi-tier network with given system parameters, the following are the main results of this paper: (1) semi-analytical expressions for the tail probabilities of CIR and CINR; (2) a closed form expression for the tail probability of CIR in the range [1,Infinity); (3) a closed form expression for the tail probability of an approximation to CIR in the entire range [0,Infinity); (4) a lookup table based approach for obtaining the tail probability of CINR, and (5) the study of the effect of shadow fading and BSs with ideal sectorized antennas on the CIR and CINR. Based on these results, it is shown that, in a practical cellular system, the installation of additional wireless networks (microcells, picocells and femtocells) with low power BSs over the already existing macrocell network will always improve the CINR performance at the MS.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted at IEEE Globecom 201

Stochastic Ordering based Carrier-to-Interference Ratio Analysis for the Shotgun Cellular Systems

A simple analytical tool based on stochastic ordering is developed to compare the distributions of carrier-to-interference ratio at the mobile station of two cellular systems where the base stations are distributed randomly according to certain non-homogeneous Poisson point processes. The comparison is conveniently done by studying only the base station densities without having to solve for the distributions of the carrier-to-interference ratio, that are often hard to obtain.Comment: 10 pages, 0 figures, submitted for review to IEEE Wireless Communications Letters on October 11, 201

Detection of an Extrasolar Planet Atmosphere

We report high precision spectrophotometric observations of four planetary transits of HD 209458, in the region of the sodium resonance doublet at 589.3 nm. We find that the photometric dimming during transit in a bandpass centered on the sodium feature is deeper by (2.32 +/- 0.57) x 10^{-4} relative to simultaneous observations of the transit in adjacent bands. We interpret this additional dimming as absorption from sodium in the planetary atmosphere, as recently predicted from several theoretical modeling efforts. Our model for a cloudless planetary atmosphere with a solar abundance of sodium in atomic form predicts more sodium absorption than we observe. There are several possibilities that may account for this reduced amplitude, including reaction of atomic sodium into molecular gases and/or condensates, photoionization of sodium by the stellar flux, a low primordial abundance of sodium, or the presence of clouds high in the atmosphere.Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ 2001 November 1

Calibrated Cylindrical Mach Probe In A Plasma Wind Tunnel

    Get PDF
A simple cylindrical Mach probe is described along with an independent calibration procedure in a magnetized plasma wind tunnel. A particle orbit calculation corroborates our model. The probe operates in the weakly magnetized regime in which probe dimension and ion orbit are of the same scale. Analytical and simulation models are favorably compared with experimental calibration. The definitive version was published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 131 (2012): EL492-EL498, doi:10.1121/1.4722193.Motivated by measurements made in the 2004 Long-Range Ocean Acoustic Propagation Experiment (LOAPEX), the problem of mode processing transient acoustic signals collected on two nearby vertical line arrays is considered. The first three moments (centroid, variance, and skewness) of broadband distributions of acoustic energy with fixed mode number (referred to as modal group arrivals) are estimated. It is shown that despite the absence of signal coherence between the two arrays and poor high mode number energy resolution, the centroid and variance of these distributions can be estimated with tolerable errors using piecewise coherent mode processing as described in this paper. This work was supported by the Office of Naval Research, Code 322, Grant Nos.
