Includes bibliographical references.Includes illustrations and maps.Kendall County lies in northeastern Illinois, adjacent to the greater metropolitan area of Chicago. Rapid population growth in the county has emphasized the need for long-range land use planning. This study was undertaken to develop the basic geologic data needed to make informed land use decisions. The surficial deposits of Kendall County were mapped using threedimensional, or "stack-unit," mapping techniques. The procedures used to construct the maps are the following: (1) collection and evaluation of all available surface and subsurface data; (2) use of soil survey maps to group soils that have similar C horizons (3) classification of C horizons as geologic units; and (4) addition of subsurface information to a depth of 20 feet to complete the stackunit series. The stack-unit maps developed in this study provide a data base for the development of interpretive maps indicating the suitability of areas for a designated type of land use.M.S. (Master of Science
