    Infection of red foxes with Echinococcus multilocularis in western Switzerland

    In the Jura mountains, Plateau and Alps of western Switzerland important variations in the prevalence of Echinococcus multilocularis infection in red foxes were observed between geographical areas from 1990 to 1995. The Jura mountains and the Plateau had higher mean prevalence levels than the Alps with 30.6, 32.4 and 18.8%, respectively. The highest rate was recorded in the Plateau in the canton of Fribourg with a prevalence of 52.3%. The prevalence of E. multilocularis infection in foxes in the alpine canton of Valais was the lowest (7.1%). Juvenile foxes were found to be more susceptible to E. multilocularis than adults. Adult foxes were less heavily infected in summer and autumn, while the prevalence in juveniles (less than 1 year old) increased between the spring and winter, when they are more than 6 months old. The retrospective data relate to the beginning of the 1990s, since when a drastic prevalence increase of E. multilocularis infection in foxes has occurred in several regions of Europe. Nevertheless, the study is a major contribution to the epidemiological situation of E. multilocularis in central Europe, in that it contains valuable information on spatial distribution and seasonal differences in different age groups of foxe

    A Review of Tannin Determination Methods Using Spectrophotometric Detection in Red Wines and Their Ability to Predict Astringency

    Astringency is an important sensory attribute that influences red wine quality. The astringent sensation inside the mouth is caused by a group of molecules called tannins. These molecules can be quantified and analysed by several numbers of methods, such as the Bate Smith method, Adams Harbertson assay, and methylcellulose precipitation method. All these methods are colourimetric, however they differ on the principle on which they are based and, as well as on the tannin pool they are able to measure. In the literature, it is possible to find a wide range of concentrations of tannins for the main red wines varieties, which have been evaluated by the methods herein reviewed. For instance, higher tannin concentrations are obtained using the Bate Smith method (2.08-3.48 g/L tannin) compared with the Adams Harbertson assay (0.58-0.14 g/L tannin), which exhibit the lowest results. However, studies that directly compare results obtained with these methods are scarce.     Alloprof: a new French question-answer education dataset and its use in an information retrieval case study

    Teachers and students are increasingly relying on online learning resources to supplement the ones provided in school. This increase in the breadth and depth of available resources is a great thing for students, but only provided they are able to find answers to their queries. Question-answering and information retrieval systems have benefited from public datasets to train and evaluate their algorithms, but most of these datasets have been in English text written by and for adults. We introduce a new public French question-answering dataset collected from Alloprof, a Quebec-based primary and high-school help website, containing 29 349 questions and their explanations in a variety of school subjects from 10 368 students, with more than half of the explanations containing links to other questions or some of the 2 596 reference pages on the website. We also present a case study of this dataset in an information retrieval task. This dataset was collected on the Alloprof public forum, with all questions verified for their appropriateness and the explanations verified both for their appropriateness and their relevance to the question. To predict relevant documents, architectures using pre-trained BERT models were fine-tuned and evaluated. This dataset will allow researchers to develop question-answering, information retrieval and other algorithms specifically for the French speaking education context. Furthermore, the range of language proficiency, images, mathematical symbols and spelling mistakes will necessitate algorithms based on a multimodal comprehension. The case study we present as a baseline shows an approach that relies on recent techniques provides an acceptable performance level, but more work is necessary before it can reliably be used and trusted in a production setting

    JACoW web site http://accelconf.web.cern.ch/AccelConf/e06This paper describes the HF (High-Frequency) and dynamic beam modelling performed onto the 3 GHz / 2,5 cells photo-injector of the future CTF3 (CLIC Test Facility 3) probe beam linac. The latter provides the beam to demonstrate the feasibility of the 30 GHz accelerating sections in the framework of the CLIC project. The Probe Beam Photo-Injector (PBPI) is inspired from the Drive Beam Photo-Injector (DBPI) already designed by LAL and actually tested in our laboratory. However, the design of PBPI has been simplified with respect to the previous because the charge per bunch is 4 times lower and the number of bunches several orders of magnitude smaller. The internal geometry and the coupling system of the PBPI have been designed with 2D (SUPERFISH*) and 3D (HFSS**) codes. Based on the modified design, PARMELA and POISSON simulations showed that the technical specifications are fulfilled. The vacuum issue has been also carefully investigated, and NEG (Non Evaporated Getter) technology has been adopted in order to reach the 101010^–10 mbar pressure inside the structure.     Superconducting pairing and density-wave instabilities in quasi-one-dimensional conductors

    Using a renormalization group approach, we determine the phase diagram of an extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model that includes interchain hopping, nesting deviations and both intrachain and interchain repulsive interactions. d-wave superconductivity, which dominates over the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase at large nesting deviations, becomes unstable to the benefit of a triplet ff-wave phase for a weak repulsive interchain backscattering term g1>0g_1^\perp>0, despite the persistence of dominant SDW correlations in the normal state. Antiferromagnetism becomes unstable against the formation of a charge-density-wave state when g1g_1^\perp exceeds some critical value. While these features persist when both Umklapp processes and interchain forward scattering (g2g_2^\perp) are taken into account, the effect of g2g_2^\perp alone is found to frustrate nearest-neighbor interchain dd- and ff-wave pairing and instead favor next-nearest-neighbor interchain singlet or triplet pairing. We argue that the close proximity of SDW and charge-density-wave phases, singlet d-wave and triplet ff-wave superconducting phases in the theoretical phase diagram provides a possible explanation for recent puzzling experimental findings in the Bechgaard salts, including the coexistence of SDW and charge-density-wave phases and the possibility of a triplet pairing in the superconducting phase.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

    TUPC087International audienceEmittance measurements performed in the diagnostic section of the ATF extraction line since 1998 lead to ver- tical emittances three times larger than the expected ones, with a strong dependence on intensity. An experimental program is pursued to investigate potential sources of emit- tance growth and find possible remedies. This requires ef- ficient and reliable emittance measurement techniques. In the past, several phase-space reconstruction methods devel- oped at SLAC and KEK have been used to estimate the ver- tical emittance, based on multiple location beam size mea- surements and dedicated quadrupole scans. These methods have been shown to be very sensitive to measurement er- rors and other fluctuations in the beam conditions. In this context new emittance measurements have been performed revisiting these methods and newly developed ones with a systematic approach to compare and characterise their per- formance in the ATF extraction line

    Integrated crop-livestock management system: C and N stocks in a Brazilian clayey oxisol using NIRS.

    Integrated crop-livestock management systems (ICLS) have been increasingly recommended in Brazil. However, knowledge on the indicators used to evaluate their impact on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) concentrations and stocks is still limited. The study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of ICLS systems under two tillage and fertilization regimes on C and N stocks and concentrations at a 0-30 cm depth. The following soil management systems were studied: continuous pasture; continuous crop; crop/pasture rotation; and pasture/crop rotation. The native Cerrado was used as a control. The rotation systems were on a four year cycle. Under the rotation and continuous crop systems there were two levels of soil tillage (conventional and no-tillage) and fertility (maintenance and corrective fertility). The soil tillage and land use systems had a significant impact on the concentrations of C and N in the soil; however, no effect was observed for the fertilizer treatment. ICLS systems did not differ from continuous systems with regard to the C and N stocks; however, these elements tended to accumulate under ICLS systems associated with no-tillage. NIR spectroscopy proved to be a useful tool in quantifying the concentrations of C and N in the soil

    Horizontal partial laryngectomy for supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma

    Between 1981-1999, 75 patients treated for supraglottic SCC with horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy (HSL) at the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Department of Lausanne University Hospital were retrospectively studied. There were 16 patients with T1, 46 with T2 and 13 with T3 tumors. Among these, 16 patients (21%) had clinical neck disease corresponding to stage I, II, III and IV in 12, 39, 18 and 6 patients, respectively. All patients had HSL. Most patients had either elective or therapeutic bilateral level II-IV selective neck dissection. Six patients (8%) with advanced neck disease had ipsilateral radical and controlateral elective II-IV selective neck dissections. Adjuvant radiotherapy was given to 25 patients (30%) for either positive surgical margins (n=8), pathological nodal status (n=14) or both (n=3). Median follow-up was 48months (range, 24-199). Five-year disease-specific survival and locoregional and local control were 92, 90 and 92.5%, respectively. Among five patients who were diagnosed with local recurrence, one had a total laryngectomy (1.4%); the others were treated by endoscopic laser surgery. Two patients had both a local and regional recurrence. They were salvaged with combined surgery and radiotherapy, but eventually died of their disease. Cartilage infiltration seems to influence both local control (P=0.03) and disease-specific survival (P=0.06). There was a trend for worse survival with pathological node involvement (P=0.15) and extralaryngeal extension of the cancer (P=0.1). All patients except one recovered a close to normal function after the treatment. Aspiration was present in 16 patients (26%) in the early postoperative period. A median of 16days (7-9) was necessary to recover a close to normal diet. Decannulation took a median of 17days (8-93). Seven patients kept a tracheotomy tube for up to 3months because of persistent aspiration. There was no permanent tracheostomy or total laryngectomy for functional purposes. Horizontal supraglottic laryngectomy remains an adequate therapeutic alternative for supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma, offering an excellent oncological outcome. The postoperative functional morbidity is substantial, indicating the need for careful patient selection, but good laryngeal function recovery is the rule. The surgical alternative is endoscopic laser surgery, which may offer comparable oncological results with less functional morbidity.
