Research investigation of seepage control for dams and levees
The problems of a century old levee system have provided excellent research for the Corp of Engineers and others in the design and construction of earth dams for flood control, navigation and multi-purpose projects. A special problem on which valuable knowledge has been gained is that of seepage control. The experiences obtained in recent years have been supplemented by theoretical developments in the field of soil mechanics, but it is believed that considerable information will be gained on seepage control from further investigation and experience.
The safety factor to prevent failure from seepage is believed to be the most critical in the present design of levees. It is important because the levee like a chain is only as strong as the weakest link. If the levee fails at one point the whole district is flooded. The damage estimated due to a single break in a levee protecting about 50,000 acres in 1944 was between 2 and 3 million dollars.
Millions of dollars are being spent to construct levees for flood protection. About 5 million dollars was appropriated for levee construction in the St. Louis District alone for the year of 1949. This is a small part of the national program.
Any effort in research, testing, or study for design of corrective measures to protect levees and dams from destruction due to seepage is believed worth while. The results of some experiments and design follow --Introduction, page ii
Student Evaluations of Social Media in a University Course
Although university students use social media such as blogs, Twitter, instant messaging, text messaging, and Facebook to communicate with each other, the number of these tools used in the context of their coursework is more limited. In this qualitative study we investigate student evaluations of the use of social media in a university course. Students in an upper level university class that employed social media were asked to reflect on their use of social media in the class. Most report that they found the tools useful, either for their personal productivity or as training tools. We draw implications for the use of social media in university instruction from these finding

Mobile App Installation: the Role of Precautions and Desensitization
The purpose of this research is to investigate precautions that consumers take before installing mobile apps and consumer’s potential desensitization to excessive app permission requests. Through a survey of 209 participants, a prediction model was created that attempts to predict whether respondents would download applications asking for excessive permissions. The model results indicate those that take more precautions are less likely to download apps requesting excessive permissions. However, the precautions taken by participants may be inadequate and may leave consumers with a false since of security. Another key finding with the support of Communication Theory and the C-HIP Model is that some consumers have become desensitized to excessive permission requests. These consumers knowingly install apps requesting excessive permissions for reasons such as nothing bad has happened to them before, they trust the market, or they really want the app. The security implications of permission desensitization and inadequate precautions are discussed
An Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Degree Program in Electronic Commerce
This paper describes an innovative curriculum for an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program in electronic commerce. Faculty from the disciplines of computer information systems, computer science, operations management, marketing and graphic design collaborated in devising a curriculum that focuses on the business of electronic commerce while providing a solid base of information technology skills. The program includes an integrated junior year experience that gives students business and technical skills in a team-taught environment. During the senior year, students concentrate on technology infrastructure, business processes, or market analysis and development. This paper not only presents a blueprint for an undergraduate curriculum, but also provides a model for faculty cooperation across academic disciplines
