Martin Heidegger’s Path to an Aesthetic ετηος
Martin Heidegger is infamous for his rejection of the validity of Ethics as a philosophical endeavour and moreover, for his aesthetic formulation of ετηος. In this paper I will attempt to trace the path of Heidegger’s thought from his early engagement with Aristotle and Religion, through pre-Socratic thinking, to the formulation of ετηος as an authentic dwelling in the truth of being revealed by the poet
Low Wage Service Sector Workers in New York City
Making enough money to survive in New York City is challenging for many, especially for those struggling at the lowest end of the pay scale. Every day tens of thousands of low wage workers in New York City must ask themselves these difficult questions: Which utility should I pay this month: the telephone or the gas? Should I walk to work -- more than an hour -- to avoid the $5.00 round trip subway cost? How will I afford to feed my family?New York Communities Organizing Fund, Inc. (NYCOFI) and New York Communities for Change (NYCC) surveyed low wage workers in a variety of industries around New York City to get a real-world view of life in one of the most expensive cities in the country. This paper makes specific recommendations that are informed by employment statistics, an analysis of the supports that are available to workers, and our own research in the field. We hope this paper will be a starting place for those low wage workers organizing for better conditions. We also hope it will be a factual source for those policy makers working for better conditions for low wage workers. In a city with so much wealth, no one should be struggling day-to-day just to get by
Imbedding Christian Values in the Public Education Setting: Creating a Democratic Classroom Environment
This article supports the need for Christian education in the sustainment of democracy and discusses the opportunity for Christian values to be implicitly imbedded into classroom through the creation of a democratic forum. This nation was founded on Christian principles. While the basis of today’s public education setting includes a basic understanding of the core skills (reading, writing and basic arithmetic), these skills alone are not enough for a student to achieve success. A student must also learn, through the education and spiritual process, courage, confidence and life skills in order to survive in today’s society. Furthermore, the ability to apply the core skills is necessary in order for an individual to fully achieve his or her potential. Through education and spirituality, an individual undergoes a transformation, gaining an understanding and appreciation of the world
