The article provides an edition and translation of a soghitha attributed to ‘Isaac the Teacher’, to be found in Sinai Syriacus 10. In view of the large number of unpublished memre attributed to one or other of the three fifth- and sixth-century Syriac poets name Isaac, an Appendix provides an alphabetical list of the incipits of all memre attributed to an Isaac which are to be found in early manuscripts datable to the sixth and seventh centuries
A fragment of the Harklean version of St Matthew’s Gospel in the Monastery of Mar Musa
The monastery of Mar Musa (Syria) possesses a small Syriac fragment on parchment. The text is identified as parts of Matthew 22 in the Harklean version. The fragment can be dated to the mid 12th century, and so it represents the second oldest known manuscript connected with the monastery. An edition and translation of the fragment is provided.
Syriac authors took over and adapted the ancient Mesopotamian genre of precedence dispute, transforming it into a dispute or dialogue, with theological overtones, which is normally between biblical characters. A small number of these dialogue poems concern saints, rather than biblical characters, and it is one of these, where the protagonists are St Marina and Satan, which is re-published here in a critical edition, together with three soghyatha which concern the life of St Marina.
A Syriac Dialogue between Joseph and Benjamin
Among the many Syriac poems on the biblical Patriarch Joseph are two Dialogue poems, one between Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife, the other between Joseph and Benjamin. The latter, for which the scenario is the moment when Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers (Gen. 45:1-15), is edited here from late manuscripts belonging to both East and West Syriac tradition, accompanied by an English translation
Electronic polarization in pentacene crystals and thin films
Electronic polarization is evaluated in pentacene crystals and in thin films
on a metallic substrate using a self-consistent method for computing charge
redistribution in non-overlapping molecules. The optical dielectric constant
and its principal axes are reported for a neutral crystal. The polarization
energies P+ and P- of a cation and anion at infinite separation are found for
both molecules in the crystal's unit cell in the bulk, at the surface, and at
the organic-metal interface of a film of N molecular layers. We find that a
single pentacene layer with herring-bone packing provides a screening
environment approaching the bulk. The polarization contribution to the
transport gap P=(P+)+(P-), which is 2.01 eV in the bulk, decreases and
increases by only ~ 10% at surfaces and interfaces, respectively. We also
compute the polarization energy of charge-transfer (CT) states with fixed
separation between anion and cation, and compare to electroabsorption data and
to submolecular calculations. Electronic polarization of ~ 1 eV per charge has
a major role for transport in organic molecular systems with limited overlap.Comment: 10 revtex pages, 6 PS figures embedde
The Future of Agent-Based Modeling
In this paper, I elaborate on the role of agent-based (AB) modeling for macroeconomic research. My main tenet is that the full potential of the AB approach has not been realized yet. This potential lies in the modular nature of the models, which is bought by abandoning the straitjacket of rational expectations and embracing an evolutionary perspective. I envisage the foundation of a Modular Macroeconomic Science, where new models with heterogeneous interacting agents, endowed with partial information and limited computational ability, can be created by recombining and extending existing models in a unified computational framework
Being Attractive Brings Advantages: The Case of Parrot Species in Captivity
Background: Parrots are one of the most frequently kept and bred bird orders in captivity. This increases poaching and thus the potential importance of captive populations for rescue programmes managed by zoos and related institutions. Both captive breeding and poaching are selective and may be influenced by the attractiveness of particular species to humans. In this paper, we tested the hypothesis that the size of zoo populations is not only determined by conservation needs, but also by the perceived beauty of individual parrot species assessed by human observers. Methodology/Principal Findings: For the purpose of data collection, we defined four sets of species (40 parrots, 367 parrots, 34 amazons, 17 macaws). Then, we asked 776 human respondents to evaluate parrot pictures of the selected species according to perceived beauty and we analyzed its association with color and morphological characters. Irrespective of the species set, we found a good agreement among the respondents. The preferred species tended to be large, colorful, and long-tailed. Conclusions/Significance: We repeatedly confirmed significant, positive association between the perceived beauty and the size of worldwide zoo population. Moreover, the range size and body size appeared to be significant predictors of zoo population size. In contrast, the effects of other explanatory variables, including the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) listing, appeared insignificant. Our results may suggest that zoos preferentially keep beautifu
