Synthesis, Structure and Properties of Tetragonal Sr2M3As2O2 (M3 = Mn3, Mn2Cu and MnZn2) Compounds Containing Alternating CuO2-Type and FeAs-Type Layers
Polycrystalline samples of Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2, Sr2Mn3As2O2, and Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2 were
synthesized. Their temperature- and applied magnetic field-dependent
structural, transport, thermal, and magnetic properties were characterized by
means of x-ray and neutron diffraction, electrical resistivity rho, heat
capacity, magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements. These
compounds have a body-centered-tetragonal crystal structure (space group
I4/mmm) that consists of MO2 (M = Zn and/or Mn) oxide layers similar to the
CuO2 layers in high superconducting transition temperature Tc cuprate
superconductors, and intermetallic MAs (M = Cu and/or Mn) layers similar to the
FeAs layers in high-Tc pnictides. These two types of layers alternate along the
crystallographic c-axis and are separated by Sr atoms. The site occupancies of
Mn, Cu and Zn were studied using Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron
powder diffraction data. The temperature dependences of rho suggest metallic
character for Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 and semiconducting character for Sr2Mn3As2O2 and
Sr2Zn2MnAs2O2. Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 is inferred to be a ferrimagnet with a Curie
temperature TC = 95(1) K. Remarkably, we find that the magnetic ground state
structure changes from a G-type antiferromagnetic structure in Sr2Mn3As2O2 to
an A-type ferrimagnetic structure in Sr2Mn2CuAs2O2 in which the Mn ions in each
layer are ferromagnetically aligned, but are antiferromagnetically aligned

Statistical pairwise interaction model of stock market
Financial markets are a classical example of complex systems as they comprise
many interacting stocks. As such, we can obtain a surprisingly good description
of their structure by making the rough simplification of binary daily returns.
Spin glass models have been applied and gave some valuable results but at the
price of restrictive assumptions on the market dynamics or others are
agent-based models with rules designed in order to recover some empirical
behaviours. Here we show that the pairwise model is actually a statistically
consistent model with observed first and second moments of the stocks
orientation without making such restrictive assumptions. This is done with an
approach based only on empirical data of price returns. Our data analysis of
six major indices suggests that the actual interaction structure may be thought
as an Ising model on a complex network with interaction strengths scaling as
the inverse of the system size. This has potentially important implications
since many properties of such a model are already known and some techniques of
the spin glass theory can be straightforwardly applied. Typical behaviours, as
multiple equilibria or metastable states, different characteristic time scales,
spatial patterns, order-disorder, could find an explanation in this picture.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure
Concurrent coevolution of intra-organismal cheaters and resisters
The evolution of multicellularity is a major transition that is not yet fully understood. Specifically, we do not know whether there are any mechanisms by which multicellularity can be maintained without a single-cell bottleneck or other relatedness-enhancing mechanisms. Under low relatedness, cheaters can evolve that benefit from the altruistic behaviour of others without themselves sacrificing. If these are obligate cheaters, incapable of cooperating, their spread can lead to the demise of multicellularity. One possibility, however, is that cooperators can evolve resistance to cheaters. We tested this idea in a facultatively multicellular social amoeba, Dictyostelium discoideum. This amoeba usually exists as a single cell but, when stressed, thousands of cells aggregate to form a multicellular organism in which some of the cells sacrifice for the good of others. We used lineages that had undergone experimental evolution at very low relatedness, during which time obligate cheaters evolved. Unlike earlier experiments, which found resistance to cheaters that were prevented from evolving, we competed cheaters and noncheaters that evolved together, and cheaters with their ancestors. We found that noncheaters can evolve resistance to cheating before cheating sweeps through the population and multicellularity is lost. Our results provide insight into cheater-resister coevolutionary dynamics, in turn providing experimental evidence for the maintenance of at least a simple form of multicellularity by means other than high relatedness
Future direction of pathogenesis and treatment for rheumatic disorders
After the breakthrough in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and numerous related disorders with biological therapies targeting TNFa at the Kennedy Institute in London Millions of patients have tremendously benefitted. However, we cannot cure these diseases yet and have to search for additional therapeutic targets. Since it was shown that synovial fibroblasts (SF) are not only effector cells responding to inflammatory stimuli, but appear endogenously activated and potentially involved into spreading the disease [1], we searched for the epigenetic modifications leading to the activated phenotype of these cells. Epigenetics in its scientific definition “is the study of all heritable and potentially reversible changes in genome function that do not alter the nucleotide sequence within the DNA”, but might be considered in simpler terms as the regulation of gene expression. Catastrophic Phase Transitions and Early Warnings in a Spatial Ecological Model
Gradual changes in exploitation, nutrient loading, etc. produce shifts
between alternative stable states (ASS) in ecosystems which, quite often, are
not smooth but abrupt or catastrophic. Early warnings of such catastrophic
regime shifts are fundamental for designing management protocols for
ecosystems. Here we study the spatial version of a popular ecological model,
involving a logistically growing single species subject to exploitation, which
is known to exhibit ASS. Spatial heterogeneity is introduced by a carrying
capacity parameter varying from cell to cell in a regular lattice. Transport of
biomass among cells is included in the form of diffusion. We investigate
whether different quantities from statistical mechanics -like the variance, the
two-point correlation function and the patchiness- may serve as early warnings
of catastrophic phase transitions between the ASS. In particular, we find that
the patch-size distribution follows a power law when the system is close to the
catastrophic transition. We also provide links between spatial and temporal
indicators and analyze how the interplay between diffusion and spatial
heterogeneity may affect the earliness of each of the observables. We find that
possible remedial procedures, which can be followed after these early signals,
are more effective as the diffusion becomes lower. Finally, we comment on
similarities and differences between these catastrophic shifts and paradigmatic
thermodynamic phase transitions like the liquid-vapour change of state for a
fluid like water
Estimation of cost-of-illness in patients with psoriasis in Switzerland
BACKGROUND: Evaluation of the current clinical treatment of psoriasis in Switzerland remains to be measured with the parameters cost-of-illness and quality of life. Objective: To obtain data on out-of-pocket expenses, costs of outpatient/office-based care and inpatient care for psoriasis, and to extrapolate total costs by state of severity to the entire Swiss population. METHODS: 1200 retrospective surveys were distributed to patient members of the Swiss Psoriasis and Vitiligo Society, and 400 surveys to office-/hospital-based Swiss dermatologists. The reference year for data collection was 2005. Patients were stratified into three subgroups according to severity of disease. Costs of inpatient care were measured by the amount of hospital days of psoriatic patients from the Swiss Federal Hospital Statistics. RESULTS: 383 patient questionnaires, and 170 cases documented by 57 dermatologists were analyzed. Out-of-pocket expenses/costs for ambulatory care per patient and year ranged from CHF 600-1100 for mild psoriasis to CHF 2400-9900 for severe psoriasis. Including costs for inpatient care of approximately CHF 60 million, the total annual costs for psoriasis in Switzerland in 2004/5 amounted to approximately CHF 314-458 million. CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-to-severe psoriasis is associated with a significant impact on the quality of life and at least 4-fold higher costs than mild psoriasis, indicating the need for efficient control of the disease. This cost-of-illness study provides specific health economic data for future healthcare decision making, particularly with the advent of new therapeutic agents for effective psoriasis control
