Induced higher-derivative massive gravity on a 2-brane in 4D Minkowski space
In this paper we revisit the problem of localizing gravity in a 2-brane
embedded in a 4D Minkowski space to address induction of high derivative
massive gravity. We explore the structure of propagators to find well-behaved
higher-derivative massive gravity induced on the brane. Exploring a special
case in the generalized mass term of the graviton propagator we find a model of
consistent higher order gravity with an additional unitary massive spin-2
particle and two massless particles: one spin-0 particle and one spin-1
particle. The condition for the absence of tachyons is satisfied for both
`right' and `wrong' signs of the Einstein-Hilbert term on the 2-brane. We also
find the Pauli-Fierz mass term added to the new massive gravity in three
dimensions and recover the low dimensional DGP model.Comment: Latex, 12 pages, no figure; refs added, version to appear in PL

Braneworld solutions from scalar field in bimetric theory
We investigate the presence of braneworld solutions in a bimetric theory,
with gravity and the scalar field coupling differently. We consider a
non-standard model, with a Cuscuton-like scalar field, and we show how to
generate braneworld solutions in this new scenario. In particular, we found no
gravitational instabilities for the braneworld solutions.Comment: 8 pages, no figures, Latex. Version to appear in PR
Nitrogen removal in a Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor : effect of carbon availability and intermittent aeration
This study aimed to investigate the effects of carbon availability
and intermittent aeration on nitrogen removal in a Sequencing Batch
Biofilm Reactor (SBBR). The percentage of nitrogen removal in the SBBRs
operating with dump fill and slow fill with optimum intermittent aeration
was quite similar, 75.7% and 69.2%, respectively, indicating that intermittent
aeration allowed a considerable energy saving without compromising
significantly nitrogen removal. Accumulation of storage polymers by
heterotrophic bacteria was only observed in the dump fill mode of operation.
FISH analyses of the biofilm indicated that ammonia-oxidisers belonged
to the beta-subclass Proteobacteria and nitrite-oxidisers were affiliated with the
genus Nitrospira.Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional (FEDER)Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
