Uniaxial die compaction of food powders
This paper presents a study of uniaxial die compaction of food powders for typical food powders such as maize powder and maize grits as well as a universal binder known as microcrystalline cellulose or Avicel. This method of compaction is widely applied in the industry as it can investigate the compressibility and compactability characteristics of powders prior to handling, storage, packaging, and transportation. In the current context, a cylindrical uniaxial die of 20 mm was used to compress the powders into compact. Pressures ranging of 30 and 160 MPa were applied to the uniaxial die using a universal testing machine. It was found that Avicel powder showed the highest compactability characteristic, ability to form bonding easily. Whereas, compactability of both the coarse maize and fine maize were quite similar, which may be due to the similar chemical composition. The data were then validated using an established compression equation. The asymptotic residual modulus value reduced as the ability of the food powders to form plastic junctions - assuming that they existed - increased. For the tensile strength test, Avicel compact showed the greatest tensile strength, many times that of fine maize and coarse maize compacts. However, between the fine maize and coarse maize, fine maize had higher tensile strength which may be due to its smaller particle size, as well as the fact that the contact area may be increased, and consequently may form a more coherent compact. The results indicate that this simple approach can be used to understand the compressibility and compactability characteristics of food powders which are essential for engineering and technology application
Ratios of Elastic Scattering of Pions from 3H and 3He
We have measured the elastic-scattering ratios of normalized yields for
charged pions from 3H and 3He in the backward hemisphere. At 180 MeV, we
completed the angular distribution begun with our earlier measurements, adding
six data points in the angular range of 119 deg to 169 deg in the pi-nucleus
center of mass. We also measured an excitation function with data points at
142, 180, 220, and 256 MeV incident pion energy at the largest achievable angle
for each energy between 160 deg and 170 deg in the pi-nucleus center of mass.
This excitation function corresponds to the energies of our forward-hemisphere
studies. The data, taken as a whole, show an apparent role reversal of the two
charge-symmetric ratios r1 and r2 in the backward hemisphere. Also, for data >
100 deg we observe a strong dependence on the four-momentum transfer squared
(-t) for all of the ratios regardless of pion energy or scattering angle, and
we find that the superratio R data match very well with calculations based on
the forward-hemisphere data that predicts the value of the difference between
the even-nucleon radii of 3H and 3He. Comparisons are also made with recent
calculations incorporating different wave functions and double scattering

Observation of a narrow structure in p(gamma,K_s)X via interference with phi-meson production
We report observation of a narrow peak structure at ~1.54 GeV with a Gaussian
width sigma=6 MeV in the missing of K_s in the reaction gamma+p = pK_sK_L. The
observed structure may be due to the interference between a strange (or
anti-strange) baryon resonance in the pK_L system and the phi(K_sK_L)
photoproduction leading to the same final state. The statistical significance
of the observed excess of events estimated as the log likelihood ratio of the
resonant signal+background hypothesis and the phi-production based background

Anomalous density dependence of static friction in sand
We measured experimentally the static friction force on the surface of
a glass rod immersed in dry sand. We observed that is extremely sensitive
to the closeness of packing of grains. A linear increase of the grain-density
yields to an exponentially increasing friction force. We also report on a novel
periodicity of during gradual pulling out of the rod. Our observations
demonstrate the central role of grain bridges and arches in the macroscopic

Effects of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor Fluoxetine on Counterregulatory Responses to Hypoglycemia in Individuals With Type 1 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE—Previous work has demonstrated that chronic administration of the serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) fluoxetine augments counterregulatory responses to hypoglycemia in healthy humans. However, virtually no information exists regarding the effects of fluoxetine on integrated physiological counterregulatory responses during hypoglycemia in type 1 diabetes. Therefore, the specific aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that 6-week use of the SSRI fluoxetine would amplify autonomic nervous system (ANS) counterregulatory responses to hypoglycemia in individuals with type 1 diabetes
Discovery of TUG-770: a highly potent free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFA1/GPR40) agonist for treatment of type 2 diabetes
Free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFA1 or GPR40) enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells and currently attracts high interest as a new target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. We here report the discovery of a highly potent FFA1 agonist with favorable physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties. The compound efficiently normalizes glucose tolerance in diet-induced obese mice, an effect that is fully sustained after 29 days of chronic dosing
