    A Novel Scheme to Search for Fractional Charge Particles in Low Energy Accelerator Experiments

    In the Standard Model of particle physics, the quarks and anti-quarks have fractional charge equal to ±1/3\pm1/3 or ±2/3\pm2/3 of the electron's charge. There has been a large number of experiments searching for fractional charge, isolatable, elementary particles using a variety of methods, including e+ee^+e^- collisions using dE/dx ionization energy loss measurements, but no evidence has been found to confirm existence of free fractional charge particles, which leads to the quark confinement theory. In this paper, a proposal to search for this kind particles is presented, which is based on the conservation law of four-momentum. Thanks to the CLEOc and BESIII detectors' large coverage, good particle identification, precision measurements of tracks' momenta and their large recorded data samples, these features make the scheme feasible in practice. The advantage of the scheme is independent of any theoretical models and sensitive for a small fraction of the quarks transitioning to the unconfinement phase from the confinement phase.Comment: 9 page

    Quantum-correlated ψ(3770)DDˉ\psi(3770) \to D\bar{D} decays collected by the CLEO-c experiment are used to perform a first measurement of F+4πF_+^{4\pi}, the fractional CPCP-even content of the self-conjugate decay Dπ+ππ+πD \to \pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-, obtaining a value of 0.737±0.0280.737 \pm 0.028. An important input to the measurement comes from the use of DKS0π+πD \to K^0_{\rm S}\pi^+\pi^- and DKL0π+πD \to K^0_{\rm L}\pi^+\pi^- decays to tag the signal mode. This same technique is applied to the channels Dπ+ππ0D \to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0 and DK+Kπ0D \to K^+K^-\pi^0, yielding F+πππ0=1.014±0.045±0.022F_+^{\pi\pi\pi^0} = 1.014 \pm 0.045 \pm 0.022 and F+KKπ0=0.734±0.106±0.054F_+^{KK\pi^0} = 0.734 \pm 0.106 \pm 0.054, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These measurements are consistent with those of an earlier analysis, based on CPCP-eigenstate tags, and can be combined to give values of F+πππ0=0.973±0.017F_+^{\pi\pi\pi^0} = 0.973 \pm 0.017 and F+KKπ0=0.732±0.055F_+^{KK\pi^0} = 0.732 \pm 0.055. The results will enable the three modes to be included in a model-independent manner in measurements of the unitarity triangle angle γ\gamma using BDKB^\mp \to DK^\mp decays, and in time-dependent studies of CPCP violation and mixing in the DDˉD\bar{D} system.Comment: Minor revisions following journal acceptanc

    In this talk we discuss how the down type left-right squark mixing in Supersymmetry can induce a new source of CP violation in the time dependent asymmtries in B --> phi K process. We use QCD improved factorization process to calculate the hadronic matrix element for the process and find the allowed parameter space for ρ\rho and ϕ\phi , the magnitude and phase of the down type LR(RL) squark mixing parameter δLR(RL)bs\delta^{bs}_{LR(RL)}.     First determination of the CP content of D->pi+pi-pi0 and D->K+K-pi0

    Quantum-correlated psi(3770)->DDbar decays collected by the CLEO-c experiment are used to perform first measurements of F+, the fractional CP-even content of the self-conjugate decays D->pi+pi-pi0 and D->K+K-pi0. Values of 0.968 +/- 0.017 +/- 0.006 and 0.731 +/- 0.058 +/- 0.021 are obtained for pi+pi-pi0 and K+K-pi0, respectively. It is demonstrated how modes of this sort can be cleanly included in measurements of the unitarity triangle angle gamma using B+/- -> D K+/- decays. The high CP-even content of D -> pi+pi-pi0, in particular, makes this a promising mode for improving the precision on gamma.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Analysis of B-> \phi K Decays in QCD Factorization

    We analyze the decay BϕKB\to \phi K within the framework of QCD-improved factorization. We found that although the twist-3 kaon distribution amplitude dominates the spectator interactions, it will suppress the decay rates slightly. The weak annihilation diagrams induced by (SP)(S+P)(S-P)(S+P) penguin operators, which are formally power-suppressed by order (Λ/mb)2(\Lambda/m_b)^2, are chirally and logarithmically enhanced. Therefore, these annihilation contributions are not subject to helicity suppression and can be sizable. The predicted branching ratio of BϕKB^-\to\phi K^- is (3.8±0.6)×106(3.8\pm0.6)\times 10^{-6} in the absence of annihilation contributions and it becomes (4.31.4+3.0)×106(4.3^{+3.0}_{-1.4})\times 10^{-6} when annihilation effects are taken into account.     Science results from the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer SpIOMM

    SpIOMM is an imaging Fourier transform spectrometer designed to obtain the visible range (350 to 850 nm) spectrum of every light source in a circular field of view of 12 arcminutes in diameter. It is attached to the 1.6-m telescope of the Observatoire du Mont Megantic in southern Quebec. We present here some results of three successful observing runs in 2007, which highlight SpIOMMs capabilities to map emission line objects over a very wide field of view and a broad spectral range. In particular, we discuss data cubes from the planetary nebula M27, the supernova remnants NGC 6992 and M1, the barred spiral galaxy NGC7479, as well as Stephans quintet, an interacting group of galaxies.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, to appear in "Ground-based and Airborne Instrumentation for Astronomy II", SPIE conference, Marseille, 23-28 June 200

    New determination of the D0→K−π+π0 and D0→K−π+π+π− coherence factors and average strong-phase differences

    AbstractMeasurements of the coherence factors (RKππ0 and RK3π) and the average strong-phase differences (δDKππ0 and δDK3π) for the decays D0→K−π+π0 and D0→K−π+π+π− are presented. These parameters are important inputs to the determination of the unitarity triangle angle γ in B∓→DK∓ decays, where D designates a D0 or D¯0 meson decaying to a common final state. The measurements are made using quantum correlated DD¯ decays collected by the CLEO-c experiment at the ψ(3770) resonance, and augment a previously published analysis by the inclusion of new events in which the signal decay is tagged by the mode D→KS0π+π−. The measurements also benefit from improved knowledge of external inputs, namely the D0D¯0 mixing parameters, rDKπ and several D-meson branching fractions. The measured values are RKππ0=0.82±0.07, δDKππ0=(164−14+20)°, RK3π=0.32−0.28+0.20 and δDK3π=(225−78+21)°. Consideration is given to how these measurements can be improved further by using the larger quantum-correlated data set collected by BESIII

    Binary systems of neutral mesons in Quantum Field Theory

    Quasi-degenerate binary systems of neutral mesons of the kaon type are investigated in Quantum Field Theory (QFT). General constraints cast by analyticity and discrete symmetries P, C, CP, TCP on the propagator (and on its spectral function) are deduced. Its poles are the physical masses; this unambiguously defines the propagating eigenstates. It is diagonalized and its spectrum thoroughly investigated. The role of ``spurious'' states, of zero norm at the poles, is emphasized, in particular for unitarity and for the realization of TCP symmetry. The K_L-K_S mass splitting triggers a tiny difference between their CP violating parameters \epsilon_L and \epsilon_S, without any violation of TCP. A constant mass matrix like used in Quantum Mechanics (QM) can only be introduced in a linear approximation to the inverse propagator, which respects its analyticity and positivity properties; it is however unable to faithfully describe all features of neutral mesons as we determine them in QFT, nor to provide any sensible parameterization of eventual effects of TCP violation. The suitable way to diagonalize the propagator makes use of a bi-orthogonal basis; it is inequivalent to a bi-unitary transformation (unless the propagator is normal, which cannot occur here). Problems linked with the existence of different ``in'' and ``out'' eigenstates are smoothed out. We study phenomenological consequences of the differences between the QFT and QM treatments. The non-vanishing of semi-leptonic asymmetry \delta_S - \delta_L does not signal, unlike usually claimed, TCP violation, while A_TCP keeps vanishing when TCP is realized.
