    This training is designed to enhance the abilities of bus operators to: Quickly and effectively evaluate suspicious and dangerous activities Take actions to protect yourself and your passengers, and Provide timely and accurate information to law enforcement through your control center This summary and the full instructor-led course were developed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) in cooperation with the National Transportation Security Center of Excellence (NTSCOE), managed through the Science and Technology Directorate of DHS. Through the intensive efforts of four universities and two federal agencies, the team conducted extensive research both nationally and abroad to identify appropriate countermeasures and related skill sets for bus operators relative to identifying suspicious and dangerous activity and reacting appropriately with a focus on life safety concerns

    GINI DP 19: The EU 2020 poverty target

    As part of its 2020 Strategy adopted in 2010, the EU has set a number of headline targets including one for poverty reduction over the next decade. This is a major development in the role accorded to social inclusion in the EU, and thus very important at the level of principle. However, the specific way the target itself has been framed, and the implications for approaches to implementing it, also merit careful consideration. The population identified in framing the target is persons in the member states either below a country-specific relative income poverty threshold, above a material deprivation threshold, or in a “jobless” household. This paper presents an in-depth analysis and critique of the way that target is formulated on both conceptual and empirical grounds and documents the consequence for our understanding of both cross-national and socio-economic patterning of poverty. The paper concludes with a discussion of alternative approaches to combining low income and material deprivation to identify those most in need from a poverty reduction perspective.

    Synthesis and Characterization of Lipid Coated Nanoparticles as Drug Delivery Vehicles

    Spherical monodisperse nanoparticles composed of gold or silver cores were modified with lipids as part of an ongoing project to utilize functionalized nanoparticles as drug delivery vehicles. A reduction reaction with sodium tri-citrate was used to synthesize nanoparticles that were characterized physically through a NanoSight LM10 HS particle sizer as well as optically with a Shimadzu UV-vis spectrophotometer. The particles were then characterized again after purification of excess ligands through centrifugation. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) was added to flip the surface charge of the particles from negative to positive as well as to serve as a stabilizing agent. After purification, the particles were coated with lipids and spun to purify them. Characterization data suggest that the particles are successfully coated with both poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and lipids and that monodispersity was maintained, as evidenced by the measured changes in size and optical properties

    Novel polyoxometalates: Is antimony the new molybdenum?

    Polyoxometalates based on Mo, W or V have been known for a long time and present a diverse range of structures, with the [XMo₁₂O₄₀]ⁿ⁻ Keggin ions (X = P, Si ,…) perhaps the best known.¹ They are still subject to intense research with >4000 papers published in the past five years. Following on from our study² of aryl arsonic acids RAsO₃H₂, which are straightforward molecular species based on four-coordinate As(V), we became interested in the corresponding antimony compounds. Although aryl stibonic acids of nominal formula RSbO₃H₂ have been known for over 100 years,³ their composition has remained uncertain, as they form only amorphous solids, have complicated titration behaviour and only limited solubility. The presumption has been that they are polymeric, based on 5- or 6-coordinate Sb with Sb-O-Sb linkages, though direct evidence is sparse.⁴ Recently, it has been shown by Beckman that if very bulky R groups are used, then relatively simple dimers such as (2,6-Mes₂C₆H₃Sb₂O₂(OH)₄(Mes=mesityl) can be isolated, but these represent a special case.
