    Theoretical modeling of the vapor cavitation in dynamically loaded journal bearings

    A theoretical investigation is made of the evolution of a vapor-bubble for a submerged journal bearing under dynamically loaded conditions using the Elrod algorithm. This method conserves mass throughout the computational domain. A comparison study is performed to determine some of the consequences of applying a nonconservative theory (pseudo-Gumbel BC) to a dynamic problem. A complete dynamic cycle of a journal whirling in a circular path is chosen for the basis of comparison. Significant differences are observed in the load components near the end of the cycle. Further, good agreement with experiment is found for stationary and nonstationary cavitation

    Numerical methods were used to determine the effects of lubricant starvation on the minimum film thickness under conditions of a hydrodynamic point contact. Starvation was effected by varying the fluid inlet level. The Reynolds boundary conditions were applied at the cavitation boundary and zero pressure was stipulated at the meniscus or inlet boundary. A minimum-film-thickness equation as a function of both the ratio of dimensionless load to dimensionless speed and inlet supply level was determined. By comparing the film generated under the starved inlet condition with the film generated from the fully flooded inlet, an expression for the film reduction factor was obtained. Based on this factor a starvation threshold was defined as well as a critically starved inlet. The changes in the inlet pressure buildup due to changing the available lubricant supply are presented in the form of three dimensional isometric plots and also in the form of contour plots

    Frequency effects on the stability of a journal bearing for periodic loading

    The stability of a journal bearing is numerically predicted when a unidirectional periodic external load is applied. The analysis is performed using a cavitation algorithm, which mimics the Jakobsson-Floberg and Olsson (JFO) theory by accounting for the mass balance through the complete bearing. Hence, the history of the film is taken into consideration. The loading pattern is taken to be sinusoidal and the frequency of the load cycle is varied. The results are compared with the predictions using Reynolds boundary conditions for both film rupture and reformation. With such comparisons, the need for accurately predicting the cavitation regions for complex loading patterns is clearly demonstrated. For a particular frequency of loading, the effects of mass, amplitude of load variation and frequency of journal speed are also investigated. The journal trajectories, transient variations in fluid film forces, net surface velocity and minimum film thickness, and pressure profiles are also presented

    On the performance of finite journal bearings lubricated with micropolar fluids

    A study of the performance parameters for a journal bearing of finite length lubricated with micropolar fluids is undertaken. Results indicate that a significantly higher load carrying capacity than the Newtonian fluids may result depending on the size of material characteristic length and the coupling number. It is also shown that although the frictional force associated with micropolar fluid is in general higher than that of a Newtonian fluid, the friction coefficient of micropolar fluids tends to be lower than that of the Newtonian

    Numerical experiments with flows of elongated granules

    Theory and numerical results are given for a program simulating two dimensional granular flow (1) between two infinite, counter-moving, parallel, roughened walls, and (2) for an infinitely wide slider. Each granule is simulated by a central repulsive force field ratcheted with force restitution factor to introduce dissipation. Transmission of angular momentum between particles occurs via Coulomb friction. The effect of granular hardness is explored. Gaps from 7 to 28 particle diameters are investigated, with solid fractions ranging from 0.2 to 0.9. Among features observed are: slip flow at boundaries, coagulation at high densities, and gross fluctuation in surface stress. A videotape has been prepared to demonstrate the foregoing effects

Based on this analysis, it is seen that in an oil film bearing operating under dynamic loads, the content of cavitation region should be oil vapor rather than the air liberated from solution, if the oil is free of entrained air

    A linear-regression by the method of least squares is made on the geometric variables that occur in the equation for point contact deformation. The ellipticity and the complete eliptic integrals of the first and second kind are expressed as a function of the x, y-plane principal radii. The ellipticity was varied from 1 (circular contact) to 10 (a configuration approaching line contact). These simplified equations enable one to calculate easily the point-contact deformation to within 3 percent without resorting to charts or numerical methods

    The effect of coatings and liners on heat transfer in a dry shaft-bush tribosystem

    The temperatures due to frictional heating within a solid lubricated or coated journal bearing were analyzed by using a finite element method. A solid model of the shaft-bush tribocontact was generated with an eight-node, three-dimensional, first-order isoparametric heat-transfer element and the Patran solid modeler software. The Patmar (Patran-Marc) translator was used to help develop the Marc-based finite element program for the system; this software was used on the Cray X-MP supercomputer to perform a finite element analysis of the contact. The analysis was performed for various liner materials, for thin, hard, wear-resistant coated bearings, and for different geometries and thermal cooling boundary conditions. The analyses indicated that thermal conductivity of the liner or coating material is the most vital thermal parameter that controls the interface temperature. In addition to design variations, the proximity of the cooling source to the heat-flux-generating interface is critically important to the temperature control in the system
