    Spacefaring skills evolved in the twenty-first century will enable missions of unprecedented complexity. One such elaborate project might be to develop tools for efficient interstellar data transfer. Informational links to other star systems would facilitate eventual human expansion beyond our solar system, as well as intercourse with potential extraterrestrial intelligence. This paper reports the major findings of a 600-page, 3-year, NASA-funded study examining in quantitative detail the requirements, some seemingly feasible methods, and implications of achieving reliable extrasolar communications

    Uniquely Qualified, Distinctively Competent: Delivering 21st Century Skills in the Basic Course

    In this manuscript we argue that the communication discipline’s pedagogical content knowledge should be expanded to include educational strategies for advancing students’ critical thinking, information literacy, and political engagement skills. Further, we argue that the discipline should explicitly position itself as uniquely qualified to address these skills. By doing so, those affiliated with the basic communication course can leverage a substantial amount of political capital on their home campuses and go a long way toward delivering the critical skills students need in order to be successful in the 21st century

    Light-cone coordinates based at a geodesic world line

    Continuing work initiated in an earlier publication [Phys. Rev. D 69, 084007 (2004)], we construct a system of light-cone coordinates based at a geodesic world line of an arbitrary curved spacetime. The construction involves (i) an advanced-time or a retarded-time coordinate that labels past or future light cones centered on the world line, (ii) a radial coordinate that is an affine parameter on the null generators of these light cones, and (iii) angular coordinates that are constant on each generator. The spacetime metric is calculated in the light-cone coordinates, and it is expressed as an expansion in powers of the radial coordinate in terms of the irreducible components of the Riemann tensor evaluated on the world line. The formalism is illustrated in two simple applications, the first involving a comoving world line of a spatially-flat cosmology, the other featuring an observer placed on the axis of symmetry of Melvin's magnetic universe.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur

    Comparison of Neuromuscular Injuries to the Surgeon during Hand-Assisted and Standard Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery

    Background and Purpose: Hand-assisted procedures have assumed a greater role in the practice of many laparoscopists. We surveyed major laparoscopy program directors to compare the incidence and location of neuromuscular injury to the surgeon during hand-assisted laparoscopic (HAL) and standard laparoscopic (SL) surgery. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire on neuromuscular injuries was e-mailed to 42 laparoscopic program directors. Respondents were instructed to report only injuries or pain associated with laparoscopic surgery when they were the primary responsible surgeon and not during open or endoscopic procedures. Results: Surveys were returned from 23 attending laparoscopic surgeons and 2 laparoscopic fellows. Surgeons reported an average of 3.9 HAL and 6.3 SL cases per month as the primary surgeon. The HAL was completed with the GelPort, LapDisk, Omniport, or a combination of devices 55%, 22%, 5%, and 14%, respectively, of the time. Comparing HAL with SL, there was significantly more hand/wrist, forearm, and shoulder pain/injuries associated with HAL (P < 0.004). There was significantly more neck pain associated with SL than HAL (P < 0.003), but no significant difference in lower-back pain (P = 0.40). Comparing the two most commonly used hand-assist devices (GelPort and LapDisk), the LapDisk demonstrated significantly more hand/wrist pain or injury (P = 0.001). Conclusion: Hand-assisted laparoscopy is associated with more frequent neuromuscular strain to the upper extremity than SL, but SL surgeons experience more neck pain or injury. Surgeon discomfort is also dependent on the type of hand-assist device. The long-term consequences of physical strain on the laparoscopic surgeon are unknown currently, but measures to minimize neuromuscular strain should be considered.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/63117/1/end.2005.19.377.pd

    CIDI-Lung-Seg: A Single-Click Annotation Tool for Automatic Delineation of Lungs from CT Scans

    Accurate and fast extraction of lung volumes from computed tomography (CT) scans remains in a great demand in the clinical environment because the available methods fail to provide a generic solution due to wide anatomical variations of lungs and existence of pathologies. Manual annotation, current gold standard, is time consuming and often subject to human bias. On the other hand, current state-of-the-art fully automated lung segmentation methods fail to make their way into the clinical practice due to their inability to efficiently incorporate human input for handling misclassifications and praxis. This paper presents a lung annotation tool for CT images that is interactive, efficient, and robust. The proposed annotation tool produces an "as accurate as possible" initial annotation based on the fuzzy-connectedness image segmentation, followed by efficient manual fixation of the initial extraction if deemed necessary by the practitioner. To provide maximum flexibility to the users, our annotation tool is supported in three major operating systems (Windows, Linux, and the Mac OS X).     Speech Evaluation Assessment: An Analysis of Written Speech Feedback on Instructor Evaluation Forms in the Basic Communication Course

    As a critical component of many general education programs, the basic communication course is at the forefront of many assessment efforts. Five years after conducting extensive program assessment using student portfolios, and after implementing revisions to the instructor training program, course directors at Illinois State University conducted another round of portfolio assessment. The present study reveals progress in the specific areas originally targeted for improvement. Additional areas for future revisions to the instructor training program are suggested. Implications for assessment efforts at other institutions are discussed

    Query Expansion for Survey Question Retrieval in the Social Sciences

    In recent years, the importance of research data and the need to archive and to share it in the scientific community have increased enormously. This introduces a whole new set of challenges for digital libraries. In the social sciences typical research data sets consist of surveys and questionnaires. In this paper we focus on the use case of social science survey question reuse and on mechanisms to support users in the query formulation for data sets. We describe and evaluate thesaurus- and co-occurrence-based approaches for query expansion to improve retrieval quality in digital libraries and research data archives. The challenge here is to translate the information need and the underlying sociological phenomena into proper queries. As we can show retrieval quality can be improved by adding related terms to the queries. In a direct comparison automatically expanded queries using extracted co-occurring terms can provide better results than queries manually reformulated by a domain expert and better results than a keyword-based BM25 baseline.Comment: to appear in Proceedings of 19th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries 2015 (TPDL 2015

    Using System Dynamics to Explore the Water Supply and Demand Dilemmas of a Small South African Municipality

    This paper explores the challenges faced by small municipalities in providing water services in a developing world context of increasing urban demand. The paper uses a case study of the Sundays River Valley Municipality (SRVM) in South Africa. The municipality faces multiple dilemmas in reconciling its available water supply with growing demand for potable water in the primary urban settlement in the area, in a struggle that is typical of the broad category of South African municipalities to which the SRVM belongs. These dilemmas are explored using a system dynamics model, referred to as the ‘Kirkwood water demand system dynamics model’ (K-DEM). This paper specifically introduces the K-DEM structure,which is aimed at investigating the impacts of households progressively receiving full water and sanitation services; the use of rainwater harvesting as an alternative form of water supply; and the possible effect of a household-level water conservation / water demand management programme. Baseline results are discussed, and areas for future research identified.
