    Linking Snake Behavior to Nest Predation in a Midwestern Bird Community

    Nest predators can adversely affect the viability of songbird populations, and their impact is exacerbated in fragmented habitats. Despite substantial research on this predator-prey interaction, however, almost all of the focus has been on the birds rather than their nest predators, thereby limiting our understanding of the factors that bring predators and nests into contact. We used radiotelemetry to document the activity of two snake species (rat snakes, Elaphe obsoleta; racers, Coluber constrictor) known to prey on nests in Midwestern bird communities and simultaneously monitored 300 songbird nests and tested the hypothesis that predation risk should increase for nests when snakes were more active and in edge habitat preferred by both snake species. Predation risk increased when rat snakes were more active, for all nests combined and for two of the six bird species for which we had sufficient nests to allow separate analyses. This result is consistent with rat snakes being more important nest predators than racers. We found no evidence, however, that nests closer to forest edges were at greater risk. These results are generally consistent with the one previous study that investigated rat snakes and nest predation simultaneously. The seemingly paradoxical failure to find higher predation risk in the snakes\u27 preferred habitat (i.e., edge) might be explained by the snakes using edges at least in part for non-foraging activities. We propose that higher nest predation in fragmented habitats (at least that attributable to snakes) results indirectly from edges promoting larger snake populations, rather than from edges directly increasing the risk of nest predation by snakes. If so, the notion of edges per se functioning as ecological traps merits further study

    Anisotropy of the space orientation of radio sources. I: The catalog

    A catalog of the extended extragalactic radio sources consisting of 10461 objects is compiled based on the list of radio sources of the FIRST survey. A total of 1801 objects are identified with galaxies and quasars of the SDSS survey and the Veron-Veron catalog. The distribution of the position angles of the axes of radio sources from the catalog is determined, and the probability that this distribution is equiprobable is shown to be less then 10^(-7). This result implies that at Z equal to or smaller then 0.5, spatial orientation of the axes of radio sources is anisotropic at a statistically significant level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Adaptive assessment for differing maths backgrounds?

    We report upon a work in progress: an attempt to use adaptive features of online mathematics homework system MapleTA to address educational challenges associated with diverse backgrounds of students in a large first year mathematics course. The course is both a service course taken by several hundred Engineering and Science students, as well as the first course for a significant proportion of Bachelor of Mathematics students. Our rationale for the MapleTA assignments is that students of different backgrounds learn mathematics at different speeds: this is difficult to cater for in a didactic lecture, but may be better addressed in online homework which is structured to give varying levels of scaffolding depending upon the live responses of each individual student. Our medium-term hope is to use such assignments as the basis for a "Flipped Classroom" approach, in which students first encounter course material outside of class time, and then class-time is used to discuss and digest those aspects students are finding difficult. Our approach is supported by the literature, which shows that active learning contexts and Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) can both be helpful in promoting learning and improving retention, but that they need to be implemented carefully. Our current implementation is of partially adaptive assignments that are run in addition to largely didactic lectures. We will also briefly discuss our use of multiple-choice "card questions" as adapted from the "Peer Instruction" work of Harvard Physicist Professor Eric Mazur, to promote more discursive mathematics lectures. The focus of the presentation will be upon the MapleTA assignments themselves and the degree of adaptivity that we have been able to implement thus far, together with a description of some of the practical pitfalls along the way, for those interested in trialling a similar approach

    Migraine attacks the Basal Ganglia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>With time, episodes of migraine headache afflict patients with increased frequency, longer duration and more intense pain. While episodic migraine may be defined as 1-14 attacks per month, there are no clear-cut phases defined, and those patients with low frequency may progress to high frequency episodic migraine and the latter may progress into chronic daily headache (> 15 attacks per month). The pathophysiology of this progression is completely unknown. Attempting to unravel this phenomenon, we used high field (human) brain imaging to compare functional responses, functional connectivity and brain morphology in patients whose migraine episodes did not progress (LF) to a matched (gender, age, age of onset and type of medication) group of patients whose migraine episodes progressed (HF).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In comparison to LF patients, responses to pain in HF patients were significantly lower in the caudate, putamen and pallidum. Paradoxically, associated with these lower responses in HF patients, gray matter volume of the right and left caudate nuclei were significantly larger than in the LF patients. Functional connectivity analysis revealed additional differences between the two groups in regard to response to pain.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Supported by current understanding of basal ganglia role in pain processing, the findings suggest a significant role of the basal ganglia in the pathophysiology of the episodic migraine.</p

    Deciphering interplay between Salmonella invasion effectors

    Bacterial pathogens have evolved a specialized type III secretion system (T3SS) to translocate virulence effector proteins directly into eukaryotic target cells. Salmonellae deploy effectors that trigger localized actin reorganization to force their own entry into non-phagocytic host cells. Six effectors (SipC, SipA, SopE/2, SopB, SptP) can individually manipulate actin dynamics at the plasma membrane, which acts as a ‘signaling hub’ during Salmonella invasion. The extent of crosstalk between these spatially coincident effectors remains unknown. Here we describe trans and cis binary entry effector interplay (BENEFIT) screens that systematically examine functional associations between effectors following their delivery into the host cell. The results reveal extensive ordered synergistic and antagonistic relationships and their relative potency, and illuminate an unexpectedly sophisticated signaling network evolved through longstanding pathogen–host interaction

    On the Hadronic Beam Model for Gamma-ray Production in Blazars

    We consider, herein, a model for gamma-ray production in blazars in which a relativistic, highly-collimated electron-proton beam interacts with a dense, compact cloud as the jet propagates through the broad and perhaps narrow line regions (BLR and NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGN). During the propagation of the beam through the cloud, the process of excitation of plasma waves becomes an important energy loss mechanism, especially for mildly relativistic proton beams. We compute the expected spectra of gamma-rays from the decay of neutral pions produced in hadronic collisions of the beam with the cloud, taking into account collisionless losses of the electron-proton beam. This model may explain the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray (both low and high emission states) of Mrk 421 as a result of synchrotron emission of secondary pairs from the decay of charged pions and gamma-ray emission from the decay of neutral pions for the plausible cloud parameters. However clouds can not be too hot and too dense. Otherwise the TeV gamma-rays can be attenuated by the bremsstrahlung radiation in the cloud and the secondary pairs are not able to efficiently produce synchrotron flares because of the dominant role of inverse Compton scattering. The non-variable γ\gamma-ray emission observed from Mrk 421 in the EGRET energy range cannot be described by the γ\gamma-rays from decay of neutral pions provided that the spectrum of protons in the beam is well described by a simple power law. These γ\gamma-rays might only be produced by secondary pairs scattering the soft non-variable X-rays which might originate in the inner part of the accretion disk.Comment: 14 pages,3 figures, latex, submitted to Ap

    Evidence of Segregated Spawning in a Single Marine Fish Stock: Sympatric Divergence of Ecotypes in Icelandic Cod?

    There is increasing recognition of intraspecific diversity and population structure within marine fish species, yet there is little direct evidence of the isolating mechanisms that maintain it or documentation of its ecological extent. We analyzed depth and temperature histories collected by electronic data storage tags retrieved from 104 Atlantic cod at liberty ≥1 year to evaluate a possible isolating mechanisms maintaining population structure within the Icelandic cod stock. This stock consists of two distinct behavioral types, resident coastal cod and migratory frontal cod, each occurring within two geographically distinct populations. Despite being captured together on the same spawning grounds, we show the behavioral types seem reproductively isolated by fine-scale differences in spawning habitat selection, primarily depth. Additionally, the different groups occupied distinct seasonal thermal and bathymetric niches that generally demonstrated low levels of overlap throughout the year. Our results indicate that isolating mechanisms, such as differential habitat selection during spawning, might contribute to maintaining diversity and fine-scale population structure in broadcast-spawning marine fishes
