Unsolvability Cores in Classification Problems
Classification problems have been introduced by M. Ziegler as a
generalization of promise problems. In this paper we are concerned with
solvability and unsolvability questions with respect to a given set or language
family, especially with cores of unsolvability. We generalize the results about
unsolvability cores in promise problems to classification problems. Our main
results are a characterization of unsolvability cores via cohesiveness and
existence theorems for such cores in unsolvable classification problems. In
contrast to promise problems we have to strengthen the conditions to assert the
existence of such cores. In general unsolvable classification problems with
more than two components exist, which possess no cores, even if the set family
under consideration satisfies the assumptions which are necessary to prove the
existence of cores in unsolvable promise problems. But, if one of the
components is fixed we can use the results on unsolvability cores in promise
problems, to assert the existence of such cores in general. In this case we
speak of conditional classification problems and conditional cores. The
existence of conditional cores can be related to complexity cores. Using this
connection we can prove for language families, that conditional cores with
recursive components exist, provided that this family admits an uniform
solution for the word problem

Numerical simulations of aggregate breakup in bounded and unbounded turbulent flows
Breakup of small aggregates in fully developed turbulence is studied by means
of direct numerical simulations in a series of typical bounded and unbounded
flow configurations, such as a turbulent channel flow, a developing boundary
layer and homogeneous isotropic turbulence. The simplest criterion for breakup
is adopted, whereas aggregate breakup occurs when the local hydrodynamic stress
, with being the energy dissipation
at the position of the aggregate, overcomes a given threshold
, which is characteristic for a given type of aggregates.
Results show that the breakup rate decreases with increasing threshold. For
small thresholds, it develops a universal scaling among the different flows.
For high thresholds, the breakup rates show strong differences between the
different flow configurations, highlighting the importance of non-universal
mean-flow properties. To further assess the effects of flow inhomogeneity and
turbulent fluctuations, theresults are compared with those obtained in a smooth
stochastic flow. Furthermore, we discuss the limitations and applicability of a
set of independent proxies.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, Refinded discussion in Section 2.1, results

This volume brings together contributions on generational relations and concepts of generation in Early Modernity given on the occasion of a conference organized at Bamberg by the Research Training Group of the German Research Foundation (DFG) 'Generational Awareness and Generational Conflicts in Antiquity and the Middle Ages'. The topics ranged from the ancient Diadoch kingdoms to the history of the Ottonian royal family of the 10th and 11th centuries and the early modern landed gentry in Westfalia. Addressing questions from historical, literary and social studies the validity of the concept of 'generation' was discussed among scholars and students from a variety of disciplines

Distributed delays stabilize neural feedback systems
We consider the effect of distributed delays in neural feedback systems. The
avian optic tectum is reciprocally connected with the nucleus isthmi.
Extracellular stimulation combined with intracellular recordings reveal a range
of signal delays from 4 to 9 ms between isthmotectal elements. This observation
together with prior mathematical analysis concerning the influence of a delay
distribution on system dynamics raises the question whether a broad delay
distribution can impact the dynamics of neural feedback loops. For a system of
reciprocally connected model neurons, we found that distributed delays enhance
system stability in the following sense. With increased distribution of delays,
the system converges faster to a fixed point and converges slower toward a
limit cycle. Further, the introduction of distributed delays leads to an
increased range of the average delay value for which the system's equilibrium
point is stable. The enhancement of stability with increasing delay
distribution is caused by the introduction of smaller delays rather than the
distribution per se.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Accumulation of specific sterol precursors targets a MAP kinase cascade mediating cell-cell recognition and fusion
Sterols are vital components of eukaryotic cell membranes. Defects in sterol biosynthesis, which result in the accumulation of precursor molecules, are commonly associated with cellular disorders and disease. However, the effects of these sterol precursors on the metabolism, signaling, and behavior of cells are only poorly understood. In this study, we show that the accumulation of only ergosterol precursors with a conjugated double bond in their aliphatic side chain specifically disrupts cell–cell communication and fusion in the fungus Neurospora crassa. Genetically identical germinating spores of this fungus undergo cell–cell fusion, thereby forming a highly interconnected supracellular network during colony initiation. Before fusion, the cells use an unusual signaling mechanism that involves the coordinated and alternating switching between signal sending and receiving states of the two fusion partners. Accumulation of only ergosterol precursors with a conjugated double bond in their aliphatic side chain disrupts this coordinated cell–cell communication and suppresses cell fusion. These specific sterol precursors target a single ERK-like mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase (MAK-1)-signaling cascade, whereas a second MAP kinase pathway (MAK-2), which is also involved in cell fusion, is unaffected. These observations indicate that a minor specific change in sterol structure can exert a strong detrimental effect on a key signaling pathway of the cell, resulting in the absence of cell fusion
