Pedia tricks - Out-of-the-box thinking in paediatric dentistry

    No full text
Noncooperative behaviour faced by a paediatric dentist is the most common attribution towards behavioural manifestations of anxiety in children, and it had been observed that these relationships are long—deterministic and form part of the aforementioned belief system of the child. Forehead and Long in their study found that most uncooperative behaviour of the child is due to their strong will and these children are generally confident, persistent and independent. A fruitful method to deal with strong willed children is to violate the causal relationship by some magic tricks from preventive via curative to his/her follow ups visits. Tricks can be applied at three levels of their visit. Level 1 is preoperative tricks, which includes the preventive measures that teach and educate children for good oral health. Level 2 is operative tricks, which involves child preparedness for successful dental procedures. Level 3 is postoperative tricks, which involve positive reinforcement for regular follow ups. The purpose of this review is to make paediatric dentists think like magicians by using the science behind the magic and applying it in their practice for creating a positive attitude of a child toward dentistry and better procedural experience

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy has been accepted to treat a wide range of illnesses, including phantom limb pain, joint pain, low back pain, and cervical discomfort. TENS is not frequently used in dentistry, despite its potential advantages. 3, 4 Therefore, the rationale of present review is to discuss its dental applications in order to spread awareness of them among the dental profession

The treatment of pediatric maxillofacial fractures is unique due to the psychological, physiological, developmental, and anatomical characteristics of children. Method. This case report describes the management of symphysis fracture of mandible in a 5-year-old boy. The fracture was treated by acrylic splint with circummandibular wiring. Results. The splint was removed after 3 weeks. The patient had no complaints, and radiograph revealed a healed fracture. Conclusion. The clinical outcome in the present case indicates the management of mandibular fractures in pediatric patients using acrylic splint with circummandibular wiring

The STOP Appliance: Simultaneously treating orthodontic problems

The interplay between the intraoral and extra oral muscles plays a major role in stability and position of dentition and surrounding structures. This equilibrium is affected by oral habits. Oral habits play a major role in the development of malocclusion and also affect the surrounding hard and soft tissues. To minimize their effects, it is important to intercept the habit as soon as possible which will in turn reduce the treatment time with fixed orthodontics. To do so, an appliance is constructed which can treat a combination of problems simultaneously

Introduction: Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease which is multifactorial in etiology. The red complex bacteria have an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing the synthetic trypsin substrate, N-benzoyl-DL-arginine-2-napthylamide (BANA). Tetracycline as a bacteriostatic agent is used in the treatment of periodontitis. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate clinically and microbiologically the efficacy of tetracycline fibers in conjunction with scaling and root planning in chronic periodontitis patients. Methodology: A Split mouth clinical and microbiological randomized control study was done to compare the clinical effects of subgingivally delivered antimicrobial bioabsorbable controlled release 2 mg tetracycline fibers as an adjunct to scaling and root planning on one side and comparing the other side treated only with scaling and root planning only. Result: Showed both scaling and root planning and the use of tetracycline an adjunct with scaling and root planning are equally effective. Conclusion: It can be concluded that Scaling and root planing (SRP) with or without use of adjunct local drug delivery agent like tetracycline is effective in treating chronic periodontitis

Multidisciplinary approach in the management of ectodermal dysplasia: A case report

Ectodermal dysplasias are rare hereditary disorders characterized by abnormal development of certain tissues and structures of ectodermal origin. The condition is of importance to dentists as it affects the teeth resulting in hypodontia or anodontia, and a dentist plays an important role in the rehabilitation of the patient. Apart from having difficulties in eating and speaking, young affected individuals can also feel that they look different from their contemporaries resulting in low self-esteem. Well-fitting and functioning prosthesis could be a great help during their schooling years, as it will improve appearance and thus boost their self-confidence. We report a case of hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia in a 12-year-old girl who exhibited partial anodontia, and a multidisciplinary approach comprising restorative, orthodontic, surgical, and prosthetic treatment was planned to rehabilitate the girl. The aim of the treatment was to improve psychological development apart from promoting better functioning of the stomatognathic system

Dental trauma are accidental injuries, that may occur in any stage of life, be it infancy, childhood, adolescence or adulthood. Most TDIs occur at home, followed by at school and in the street or other public places. Such injuries may have better prognosis if the general public were informed about basic first-aid measures and seek medical care promptly. As dental healthcare providers, it is our responsibility to identify and either provide the necessary care for children with acute traumatic dental injuries or refer the case for optimal care depending on the complexity of the injury and the clinician’s knowledge, and expertise. Dental traumatology requires more attention and profound discussion in paediatric dentistry as dental and oro-facial trauma is being encountered commonly, in children
