A retrospective study on how psychopathic traits differentiate recidivists from first-time female youth offenders in juvenile detention centers
The aim of the present study was to analyze the relation between recidivism and self-reported psychopathic traits, more specifically the callous-unemotional, impulsivity, and nar- cissism dimensions of the psychopathy construct among female juvenile delinquents. The Antisocial Process Screening Device–Self-Report (APSD-SR) and other self-report psycho- metric instruments (i.e., Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits [ICU], Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, version 11 [BIS-11], Narcissistic Personality Inventory-13 [NPI-13]) independently measuring the different dimensions of psychopathy were com- pleted by a sample of incarcerated female juvenile offenders (N = 81) that were retrospectively classified as first-time offen- ders versus recidivists. The only statistically significant relation between recidivism and psychopathic traits found was with narcissism, namely with the Grandiose/Exhibitionism and the Entitlement/Exploitativeness dimensions of the NPI-13. Our results argue for some utility of self-reported psychopathic traits in retrospectively predicting recidivism among female juvenile delinquents.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT;

Urban objects classification using Mueller matrix polarimetry and machine learning
Detecting and recognizing different kinds of urban objects is an important problem, in particular, in autonomous driving. In this context, we studied the potential of Mueller matrix polarimetry for classifying a set of relevant real-world objects: vehicles, pedestrians, traffic signs, pavements, vegetation and tree trunks. We created a database with their experimental Mueller matrices measured at 1550 nm and trained two machine learning classifiers, support vector machine and artificial neural network, to classify new samples. The overall accuracy of over 95% achieved with this approach, with either models, reveals the potential of polarimetry, specially combined with other remote sensing techniques, to enhance object recognition.European Regional Development Fund (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-037902); Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (UIDB/04650/2020).This work is supported by the European Structural and Investment Funds in the FEDER component, through the Operational Competitiveness and Internationalization Program (COMPETE 2020) [Project n°

Does pre-training on brain-related tasks results in better deep-learning-based brain age biomarkers?
Brain age prediction using neuroimaging data has shown great potential as an
indicator of overall brain health and successful aging, as well as a disease
biomarker. Deep learning models have been established as reliable and efficient
brain age estimators, being trained to predict the chronological age of healthy
subjects. In this paper, we investigate the impact of a pre-training step on
deep learning models for brain age prediction. More precisely, instead of the
common approach of pre-training on natural imaging classification, we propose
pre-training the models on brain-related tasks, which led to state-of-the-art
results in our experiments on ADNI data. Furthermore, we validate the resulting
brain age biomarker on images of patients with mild cognitive impairment and
Alzheimer's disease. Interestingly, our results indicate that better-performing
deep learning models in terms of brain age prediction on healthy patients do
not result in more reliable biomarkers.Comment: Accepted at BRACIS 202
Development and verification of an open-source computational framework to simulate injection moulding
Injection moulding is one of the most important processing techniques for thermoplastic materials, and due to
the high competition and product requirements, it demands continuous optimization. In industrial practice,
aiming to minimize the resources spent on the design and manufacturing activities, it is common to resort to
appropriate computational modelling tools. However, mainly due to the typical high cost of proprietary software,
the support of computational modelling tools in injection moulding design related tasks is not available to
medium and small sized companies. This framework, and the clear perspective of the benefit brought by
computational modelling, has been motivating the development of codes based on open-source libraries, as
happens with OpenFOAM computational library. This work aims to identify the computational framework
employed by injection moulding codes well established in industry, and perform the required adaptations on the
most appropriate solvers to replicate it in OpenFOAM. Then a few case studies will be employed to compare the
predictions and performance of the proprietary and open source codesThis work is funded by FEDER funds through the COMPETE 2020 Programme and National Funds through FCT - Portuguese Foundation
