    Integrability of the Minimal Strain Equations for the Lapse and Shift in 3+1 Numerical Relativity

    Brady, Creighton and Thorne have argued that, in numerical relativity simulations of the inspiral of binary black holes, if one uses lapse and shift functions satisfying the ``minimal strain equations'' (MSE), then the coordinates might be kept co-rotating, the metric components would then evolve on the very slow inspiral timescale, and the computational demands would thus be far smaller than for more conventional slicing choices. In this paper, we derive simple, testable criteria for the MSE to be strongly elliptic, thereby guaranteeing the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the Dirichlet boundary value problem. We show that these criteria are satisfied in a test-bed metric for inspiraling binaries, and we argue that they should be satisfied quite generally for inspiraling binaries. If the local existence and uniqueness that we have proved holds globally, then, for appropriate boundary values, the solution of the MSE exhibited by Brady et. al. (which tracks the inspiral and keeps the metric evolving slowly) will be the unique solution and thus should be reproduced by (sufficiently accurate and stable) numerical integrations.Comment: 6 pages; RevTeX; submitted to Phys.     This project examines Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Code and agriculture land exchanges. Stakeholders in rural communities and agriculture are particularly interested in Section 1031 because the recent growth in transaction values of farmland may have, in part, been stimulated by Section 1031 land exchanges. Further, although many have speculated that such exchanges are widely used, little empirical research exists about the provision. We examine the theory of exchanges and develop a theoretical premium value for exchanges.     A nonlinear detection algorithm for periodic signals in gravitational wave detectors

    We present an algorithm for the detection of periodic sources of gravitational waves with interferometric detectors that is based on a special symmetry of the problem: the contributions to the phase modulation of the signal from the earth rotation are exactly equal and opposite at any two instants of time separated by half a sidereal day; the corresponding is true for the contributions from the earth orbital motion for half a sidereal year, assuming a circular orbit. The addition of phases through multiplications of the shifted time series gives a demodulated signal; specific attention is given to the reduction of noise mixing resulting from these multiplications. We discuss the statistics of this algorithm for all-sky searches (which include a parameterization of the source spin-down), in particular its optimal sensitivity as a function of required computational power. Two specific examples of all-sky searches (broad-band and narrow-band) are explored numerically, and their performances are compared with the stack-slide technique (P. R. Brady, T. Creighton, Phys.     Distributed leadership as a factor in and outcome of teacher action learning

    This paper reports an evaluation of Quality Teaching Action Learning (QTAL) projects conducted at New South Wales (NSW), Australia public (state) primary and secondary schools and explores how distributed leadership facilitated and was an outcome of the QTAL projects.The evaluation encompassed all 50 projects at 82 NSW public schools, and nine of these schools were selected and visited for case study by members of the evaluation team. Data were provided through individual project progress reports, journals, interviews and case studies. Schools used funding provided under the Australian Government Quality Teaching Program to release teams of teachers to undertake approved Quality Teaching Action Learning Projects using the NSW model of pedagogy as a framework. Projects were broadly successful in achieving their aims and distributed leadership and teacher learning were important factors in project planning, implementation, and success. Projects resulted in enhanced distributed leadership and leadership capacity in the schools and provided a foundation for further professional learning and change. Conditions facilitating and hindering action learning, distributed leadership, and educational change are highlighted.     Singularity deep inside the spherical charged black hole core

    We study analytically the spacelike singularity inside a spherically-symmetric, charged black hole coupled to a self-gravitating spherical massless scalar field. We assume spatial homogeneity, and find a generic solution in terms of a formal series expansion. This solution is tested against fully-nonlinear and inhomogeneous numerical simulations. We find full compliance between our analytical solution and the pointwise behavior of the singularity in the numerical simulations. This is a strong scalar-curvature monotonic spacelike singularity, which connects to a weak null singularity at asymptotically-late advanced time.Comment: 6 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.

    In the multihorizon black hole spacetimes, it is possible that there are degenerate Cauchy horizons with vanishing surface gravities. We investigate the stability of the degenerate Cauchy horizon in black hole spacetimes.     In Vitro Expression of Full-Length and Truncated Bovine Respiratory Syncytial Virus G Proteins and Their Antibody Responses in BALB/c Mice

    Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is a primary cause of lower respiratory tract disease in calves. Protection is incomplete following vaccination or natural infection, as re-infections are common. The objectives of this study were to create plasmid DNA constructs encoding the full-length, secreted, or conserved region of the BRSV G glycoprotein, and to compare and evaluate their expression in cell culture and potential to induce antibody responses in BALB/c mice. Transfection of COS-7 cells with plasmid DNA resulted in expression of the BRSV G region from each of the plasmid DNA constructs. Following inoculation of BALB/c mice with plasmid DNA, a significant and equivalent anti-BRSV G IgG response was elicited to the full-length and truncated BRSV G proteins. These constructs may be used to study host pathological and immunological responses

    Incorporating information from source simulations into searches for gravitational-wave bursts

    The detection of gravitational waves from astrophysical sources of gravitational waves is a realistic goal for the current generation of interferometric gravitational-wave detectors. Short duration bursts of gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae or mergers of binary black holes may bring a wealth of astronomical and astrophysical information. The weakness of the waves and the rarity of the events urges the development of optimal methods to detect the waves. The waves from these sources are not generally known well enough to use matched filtering however; this drives the need to develop new ways to exploit source simulation information in both detections and information extraction. We present an algorithmic approach to using catalogs of gravitational-wave signals developed through numerical simulation, or otherwise, to enhance our ability to detect these waves. As more detailed simulations become available, it is straightforward to incorporate the new information into the search method. This approach may also be useful when trying to extract information from a gravitational-wave observation by allowing direct comparison between the observation and simulations.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
