    The combination of positron emission tomography (PET) scanners and x-ray computed tomography (CT) scanners into a single PET/CT scanner has resulted in vast improvements in the diagnosis of disease, particularly in the field of oncology. A decade on from the publication of the details of the first PET/CT scanner, we review the technology and applications of the modality. We examine the design aspects of combining two different imaging types into a single scanner, and the artefacts produced such as attenuation correction, motion and CT truncation artefacts. The article also provides a discussion and literature review of the applications of PET/CT to date, covering detection of tumours, radiotherapy treatment planning, patient management, and applications external to the field of oncology

    Cosmic Censorship: As Strong As Ever

    Spacetimes which have been considered counter-examples to strong cosmic censorship are revisited. We demonstrate the classical instability of the Cauchy horizon inside charged black holes embedded in de Sitter spacetime for all values of the physical parameters. The relevant modes which maintain the instability, in the regime which was previously considered stable, originate as outgoing modes near to the black hole event horizon. This same mechanism is also relevant for the instability of Cauchy horizons in other proposed counter-examples of strong cosmic censorship.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX style, 1 figure included using epsfi

    Singularity deep inside the spherical charged black hole core

    We study analytically the spacelike singularity inside a spherically-symmetric, charged black hole coupled to a self-gravitating spherical massless scalar field. We assume spatial homogeneity, and find a generic solution in terms of a formal series expansion. This solution is tested against fully-nonlinear and inhomogeneous numerical simulations. We find full compliance between our analytical solution and the pointwise behavior of the singularity in the numerical simulations. This is a strong scalar-curvature monotonic spacelike singularity, which connects to a weak null singularity at asymptotically-late advanced time.Comment: 6 pages, to be published in Phys. Rev.

    In the multihorizon black hole spacetimes, it is possible that there are degenerate Cauchy horizons with vanishing surface gravities. We investigate the stability of the degenerate Cauchy horizon in black hole spacetimes.     On correlation of seismoscope response with earthquake magnitude and Modified Mercalli Intensity

    A quantitative measure of the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale for earthquakes in the western United States has been developed by correlating the peak seismoscope relative displacement response, S_d, with the reported site intensity, I_(MM). This correlation can be approximated by S̄_d(cm) ≈ 1/49.2(10^(0.288 I_MM)) for I_(MM) ≦ VIII and is characterized by one standard deviation of about 0.7 S̄_d. The data used in this study do not indicate an obvious type of dependence of S_d on local site conditions. A method for computing the analog of the local earthquake magnitude, M_(seismoscope), has been presented for possible use in strong-motion seismology and for scaling earthquakes by close-in measurements, when other seismological instruments may go off scale

    On the correlation of seismic intensity scales with the peaks of recorded strong ground motion

    Correlations of the recorded peak acceleration, velocity and displacement, and the Modified Mercalli intensity have been carried out for 57 earthquakes and 187 strong-motion accelerograms recorded in the Western United States. Correlations of peak acceleration with intensity, characterized by the data scatter exceeding one order of magnitude, have lead to average peak accelerations which are higher than those reported by a majority of previous investigators. New correlations, also characterized by scatter of data of about one order of magnitude, have been presented for peak velocities and displacements of strong ground motion versus Modified Mercalli intensity. Grouping of all recorded data according to the geology underlying the strong-motion accelerograph stations was carried out and permitted a study of the possible effects that local geology might have on the peaks of strong-motion acceleration, velocity, and displacement. Results of this analysis are as follows: (1) For ground shaking of a particular Modified Mercalli intensity, average peak acceleration recorded on hard rock is higher by a factor less than about two than the average peak acceleration recorded on alluvium; (2) the effect of local geology on the average peak velocity leads to marginally higher peak values on alluvium; and (3) the peak ground displacements are larger, by a factor less than two, when recorded on alluvium rather than on hard rock

    A simple definition of the duration of strong earthquake ground motion based on the mean-square integral of motion has been presented. It is closely related to that part of the strong motion which contributes significantly to the seismic energy as recorded at a point and to the related spectral amplitudes. Correlations have been established between the duration of strong-motion acceleration, velocity, and displacement and Modified Mercalli intensity, earthquake magnitude, the type of recording site geology, and epicentral distance. Simple relations have been presented that predict the average trend of the duration and other related parameters as a function of Modified Mercalli intensity, earthquake magnitude, site geology and epicentral distance

    Survival of the black hole's Cauchy horizon under non-compact perturbations

    We study numerically the evolution of spactime, and in particular of a spacetime singularity, inside a black hole under a class of perturbations of non-compact support. We use a very simplified toy model of a spherical charged black hole which is perturbed nonlinearly by a self-gravitating, spherical scalar field. The latter grows logarithmically with advanced time along an outgoing characteristic hypersurface. We find that for that class of perturbations a portion of the Cauchy horizon survives as a non-central, null singularity.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
