    Dialogues that Dig Deeper: Surfacing the Multiple Faces of Homelessness in Grand Rapids, MI (Report Two)

    This community dialogue was designed to identify current gaps in responses to homelessness in Grand Rapids as well as options for addressing those gaps. Given the feedback received, this report focuses on (1) mentorship programs similar to the aftercare program at Dégagé, (2) facilitated housing, and (3) ideas for fostering social connectedness. Through primary and secondary research as well as an analysis of our dialogue, our team was able to identify key areas of need in the fight for consistent, stable housing. Below you will find an outline of those ideas, more theoretical research on the subject, and data on homelessness/home-finding in general. The results will be shared with Dégagé, Seeds of Promise, nonprofit leaders, Grand Rapids businesses and openly published so any interested stakeholders can access the lessons learned

    Investigating Overdensities around z > 6 Galaxies through ALMA Observations of [C II]

    We present a search for companion [C II] emitters to known luminous sources at 6 < z < 6.5 in deep, archival ALMA observations. The observations are deep enough to detect sources with L_([CII])∼10⁸ at z ∼6. We identify three new robust line detections from a blind search of five deep fields centered on ultraluminous infrared galaxies and QSOs. We calculate the volume density of companions and find a relative overdensity of 6⁺⁴₋₃ and 86⁺⁶⁰₋₃₇ when comparing to current observational constraints and theoretical predictions, respectively. These results suggest that the central sources may be highly biased tracers of mass in the early universe. We find these companion lines to have comparable properties to other known galaxies at the same epoch. All companions lie less than 650 km s⁻¹ and between 25 and 60 kpc (projected) from their central source. To place these discoveries in context, we employ a mock galaxy catalog to estimate the luminosity function for [C II] during reionization and compare to our observations. The simulations support this result by showing a similar level of elevated counts found around such luminous [C II] sources

    Stellar Astrophysics with a Dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph. II. Orbits of Double-lined Spectroscopic Binaries

    We present orbital parameters for six double-lined spectroscopic binaries (iota Pegasi, omega Draconis, 12 Bootis, V1143 Cygni, beta Aurigae, and Mizar A) and two double-lined triple star systems (kappa Pegasi and eta Virginis). The orbital fits are based upon high-precision radial velocity observations made with a dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph, or dFTS, a new instrument which combines interferometric and dispersive elements. For some of the double-lined binaries with known inclination angles, the quality of our RV data permits us to determine the masses M_1 and M_2 of the stellar components with relative errors as small as 0.2%.Comment: 41 pages, 8 figures, accepted by A

    Impact of Oral Meloxicam on Circulating Physiological Biomarkers of Stress and Inflammation in Beef Steers After Long Distance Transportation

    We hypothesized that meloxicam administration to beef steers before shipping may be effective at reducing the impact of transportation on stress biomarkers. Circulating physiological biomarkers of stress were analyzed in a transportation trial between a meloxicam treatment group and a placebo treatment group. There were significant differences in stress biomarkers between treatment groups following transport. This suggests that there may be practical benefits for the use of long-acting non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), specifically meloxicam, to mitigate the negative effect of transport on cattle physiology

    Stellar Astrophysics with a Dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph. I. Instrument Description and Orbits of Single-lined Spectroscopic Binaries

    We have designed and constructed a second-generation version of the Dispersed Fourier Transform Spectrograph, or dFTS. This instrument combines a spectral interferometer with a dispersive spectrograph to provide high-accuracy, high-resolution optical spectra of stellar targets. The new version, dFTS2, is based upon the design of our prototype, with several modifications to improve the system throughput and performance. We deployed dFTS2 to the Steward Observatory 2.3-meter Bok Telescope from June 2007 to June 2008, and undertook an observing program on spectroscopic binary stars, with the goal of constraining the velocity amplitude K of the binary orbits with 0.1% accuracy, a significant improvement over most of the orbits reported in the literature.
