    The Dust Content of Galaxy Clusters

    We report on the detection of reddening toward z ~ 0.2 galaxy clusters. This is measured by correlating the Sloan Digital Sky Survey cluster and quasar catalogs and by comparing the photometric and spectroscopic properties of quasars behind the clusters to those in the field. We find mean E(B-V) values of a few times 10^-3 mag for sight lines passing ~Mpc from the clusters' center. The reddening curve is typical of dust but cannot be used to distinguish between different dust types. The radial dependence of the extinction is shallow near the cluster center suggesting that most of the detected dust lies at the outskirts of the clusters. Gravitational magnification of background z ~ 1.7 sources seen on Mpc (projected) scales around the clusters is found to be of order a few per cent, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. Contamination by different spectral properties of the lensed quasar population is unlikely but cannot be excluded.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Genomic Characterisation of a Novel Avipoxvirus Isolated from an Endangered Yellow-Eyed Penguin (Megadyptes antipodes)

    Emerging viral diseases have become a significant concern due to their potential consequences for animal and environmental health. Over the past few decades, it has become clear that viruses emerging in wildlife may pose a major threat to vulnerable or endangered species. Diphtheritic stomatitis, likely to be caused by an avipoxvirus, has been recognised as a significant cause of mortality for the endangered yellow-eyed penguin (Megadyptes antipodes) in New Zealand. However, the avipoxvirus that infects yellow-eyed penguins has remained uncharacterised. Here, we report the complete genome of a novel avipoxvirus, penguinpox virus 2 (PEPV2), which was derived from a virus isolate obtained from a skin lesion of a yellow-eyed penguin. The PEPV2 genome is 349.8 kbp in length and contains 327 predicted genes; five of these genes were found to be unique, while a further two genes were absent compared to shearwaterpox virus 2 (SWPV2). In comparison with penguinpox virus (PEPV) isolated from an African penguin, there was a lack of conservation within the central region of the genome. Subsequent phylogenetic analyses of the PEPV2 genome positioned it within a distinct subclade comprising the recently isolated avipoxvirus genome sequences from shearwater, canary, and magpie bird species, and demonstrated a high degree of sequence similarity with SWPV2 (96.27%). This is the first reported genome sequence of PEPV2 from a yellow-eyed penguin and will help to track the evolution of avipoxvirus infections in this rare and endangered species

    Aqueous Hg<sup>2+</sup> associates with TiO<sub>2</sub> nanoparticles according to particle size, changes particle agglomeration, and becomes less bioavailable to zebrafish

Here, gene [metallothionein 2 (mt2)] expression changes in larval zebrafish were used to evaluate the association between aqueous Hg2+ and TiO2 (NPs and bulk particle size control) to investigate the relationship between changes in Hg2+ behavior and TiO2 size. During 24 h exposures, TiO2 agglomerates increased in size and in the presence of 25 mu g Hg-2+/L, greater increases in size were observed. the concentration of Hg2+ in suspension also decreased in the presence of TiO2-NPs. Mercury increased expression of mt2 in larval zebrafish, but this response was lessened when zebrafish were exposed to Hg2+ in the presence of TiO2-NPs, and which suggests that TiO2-NPs alter the bioavailability of Hg2+ to zebrafish larvae. This ameliorative effect of TiO2 was also likely due to surface binding of Hg2+ because a greater decrease in mt2 expression was observed in the presence of 1 mg/L TiO2-NPs than 1 mg/L TiO2-bulk. in conclusion, the results show that Hg2+ will associate with TiO2-NPs, TiO2-NPs that have associated Hg2+ will settle out of the aqueous phase more rapidly, and agglomerates will deliver associated Hg2+ to sediment surfaces.     Genomic Characterisation of a Novel Avipoxvirus Isolated from an Endangered Northern Royal Albatross (Diomedea sanfordi)

    Marine bird populations have been declining globally with the factors driving this decline not fully understood. Viral diseases, including those caused by poxviruses, are a concern for endangered seabird species. In this study we have characterised a novel avipoxvirus, tentatively designated albatrosspox virus (ALPV), isolated from a skin lesion of an endangered New Zealand northern royal albatross (Diomedea sanfordi). The ALPV genome was 351.9 kbp in length and contained 336 predicted genes, seven of which were determined to be unique. The highest number of genes (313) in the ALPV genome were homologs of those in shearwaterpox virus 2 (SWPV2), while a further 10 were homologs to canarypox virus (CNPV) and an additional six to shearwaterpox virus 1 (SWPV1). Phylogenetic analyses positioned the ALPV genome within a distinct subclade comprising recently isolated avipoxvirus genome sequences from shearwater, penguin and passerine bird species. This is the first reported genome sequence of ALPV from a northern royal albatross and will help to track the evolution of avipoxvirus infections in this endangered species

    The 3-53 keV Spectrum of the Quasar 1508+5714: X-rays from z = 4.3

    We present a high-quality X-ray spectrum in the 3--53 keV rest-frame band of the radio-loud quasar 1508+5714, by far the brightest known X-ray source at z > 4. A simple power-law model with an absorption column density equal to the Galactic value in the direction of the source provides an excellent and fully adequate fit to the data; the measured power-law photon index Gamma = 1.42 (+0.13,-0.10). Upper limits to Fe K alpha line emission and Compton-reflection components are derived. We offer evidence for both X-ray and radio variability in this object and provide the first contemporaneous radio spectrum (alpha = -0.25). The data are all consistent with a picture in which the emission from this source is dominated by a relativistically beamed component in both the X-ray and radio bands.Comment: 8 pages, TeX, 2 postscript figures; to appear in ApJ Letter

    Capripoxvirus tissue tropism and shedding: A quantitative study in experimentally infected sheep and goats

    AbstractSheeppox virus and goatpox virus cause systemic disease in sheep and goats that is often associated with high morbidity and high mortality. To increase understanding of the pathogenesis of these diseases, we undertook quantitative time-course studies in sheep and goats following intradermal inoculation of Nigerian sheeppox virus or Indian goatpox virus in their respective homologous hosts. Viremia, determined by virus isolation and real-time PCR, cleared within 2 to 3 weeks post inoculation. Peak shedding of viral DNA and infectious virus in nasal, conjunctival and oral secretions occurred between 10 and 14 days post inoculation, and persisted at low levels for up to an additional 3 to 6 weeks. Although gross lesions developed in multiple organ systems, highest viral titers were detected in skin and in discrete sites within oronasal tissues and gastrointestinal tract. The temporal distribution of infectious virus and viral DNA in tissues suggests an underlying pathogenesis that is similar to smallpox and monkeypox where greatest viral replication occurs in the skin. Our data demonstrate that capripoxvirus infections in sheep and goats provide additional and convenient models which are suitable not only for evaluation of poxvirus-specific vaccine concepts and therapeutics, but also study of poxvirus–host interactions

    A Near-Infrared Spectral Template for Quasars

    We present a near-infrared quasar composite spectrum spanning the wavelength range 0.58 - 3.5 um. The spectrum has been constructed from observations of 27 quasars obtained at the NASA IRTF telescope and satisfying the criteria Ks < 14.5 and Mi < -23; the redshift range is 0.118 < z < 0.418. The signal-to-noise is moderate, reaching a maximum of 150 between 1.6 and 1.9 um. While a power-law fit to the continuum of the composite spectrum requires two breaks, a single power-law slope of alpha=-0.92 plus a 1260 K blackbody provides an excellent description of the spectrum from H-alpha to 3.5 um, strongly suggesting the presence of significant quantities of hot dust in this blue-selected quasar sample. We measure intensities and line widths for ten lines, finding that the Paschen line ratios rule out Case B recombination. We compute K-corrections for the J, H, K, and Spitzer 3.6 um bands which will be useful in analyzing observations of quasars up to z=10.Comment: 39 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Spectra will be made available in the online version of the journal, once published.     Characterisation of a new VUV beamline at the Daresbury SRS using a dispersed fluorescence apparatus incorporating CCD detection

    The design and performance of a new normal incidence monochromator at the Daresbury Synchrotron Radiation Source, optimised for experiments requiring high flux of vacuum-UV radiation, are described. The re-developed beamline 3.1, based on the Wadsworth design of monochromator, is the source of tunable vacuum-UV photons in the range 4 – 31 eV, providing over two orders of magnitude more flux than the vacuum-UV, Seya monochromator in its previous manifestation. The undispersed and dispersed fluorescence spectra resulting from photoexcitation of N2_2, CO2_2, CF4_4 and C6_6F6_6 are presented. Emitting species observed were N2+_2^+ B2Σu+^2\Sigma_u^+ - X2Σg+^2\Sigma_g^+, CO2+_2^+ A2Πu^2\Pi_u - X2Πg^2\Pi_g and B2Σu+^2\Sigma_u^+ - X2Πg^2\Pi_g, CF4_4+^+ C2^2T2_2 - X2^2T1_1 and C2^2T2_2 - A2^2T2_2, CF3_3* 2^2A2^’_2 - 2^2A2^”_2, and C6_6F6+_6^+ B2^2A2u_{2u} - X2^2E1g_{1g}. A CCD multi-channel detector has significantly reduced the time period needed to record dispersed fluorescence spectra with a comparable signal-to-noise ratio
