Role of the -resonance in determining the convergence of chiral perturbation theory
The dimensionless parameter , where
is the pion decay constant and is the pion mass, is expected to control
the convergence of chiral perturbation theory applicable to QCD. Here we
demonstrate that a strongly coupled lattice gauge theory model with the same
symmetries as two-flavor QCD but with a much lighter -resonance is
different. Our model allows us to study efficiently the convergence of chiral
perturbation theory as a function of . We first confirm that the leading
low energy constants appearing in the chiral Lagrangian are the same when
calculated from the -regime and the -regime as expected. However,
is necessary before 1-loop chiral perturbation theory
predicts the data within 1%. For the data begin to deviate
dramatically from 1-loop chiral perturbation theory predictions. We argue that
this qualitative change is due to the presence of a light -resonance in

Quasar Parallax: a Method for Determining Direct Geometrical Distances to Quasars
We describe a novel method to determine direct geometrical distances to
quasars that can measure the cosmological constant, Lambda, with minimal
assumptions. This method is equivalent to geometric parallax, with the
`standard length' being the size of the quasar broad emission line region
(BELR) as determined from the light travel time measurements of reverberation
mapping. The effect of non-zero Lambda on angular diameter is large, 40% at
z=2, so mapping angular diameter distances vs. redshift will give Lambda with
(relative) ease. In principle these measurements could be made in the UV,
optical, near infrared or even X-ray bands. Interferometers with a resolution
of 0.01mas are needed to measure the size of the BELR in z=2 quasars, which
appear plausible given reasonable short term extrapolations of current

A Morphological and Multicolor Survey for Faint QSOs in the Groth-Westphal Strip
Quasars representative of the populous faint end of the luminosity function
are frustratingly dim with m~24 at intermediate redshift; moreover groundbased
surveys for such faint QSOs suffer substantial morphological contamination by
compact galaxies having similar colors. In order to establish a more reliable
ultrafaint QSO sample, we used the APO 3.5-m telescope to take deep groundbased
U-band CCD images in fields previously imaged in V,I with WFPC2/HST. Our
approach hence combines multicolor photometry with the 0.1" spatial resolution
of HST, to establish a morphological and multicolor survey for QSOs extending
about 2 magnitudes fainter than most extant groundbased surveys. We present
results for the "Groth-Westphal Strip", in which we identify 10 high likelihood
UV-excess candidates having stellar or stellar-nucleus+galaxy morphology in
WFPC2. For m(606)<24.0 (roughly B<24.5) the surface density of such QSO
candidates is 420 (+180,-130) per square degree, or a surface density of 290
(+160,-110) per square degree with an additional V-I cut that may further
exclude compact emission line galaxies. Even pending confirming spectroscopy,
the observed surface density of QSO candidates is already low enough to yield
interesting comparisons: our measures agree extremely well with the predictions

The Evolution of Radio Galaxies at Intermediate Redshift
We describe a new estimate of the radio galaxy 1.4 GHz luminosity function
and its evolution at intermediate redshifts (z~0.4). Photometric redshifts and
color selection have been used to select Bj<23.5 early-type galaxies from the
Panoramic Deep Fields, a multicolor survey of two 25 sq deg fields.
Approximately 230 radio galaxies have then been selected by matching early-type
galaxies with NVSS radio sources brighter than 5 mJy. Estimates of the 1.4 GHz
luminosity function of radio galaxies measure significant evolution over the
observed redshift range. For an Omega_M=1 cosmology the evolution of the radio
power is consistent with luminosity evolution where P(z)=P(0)(1+z)^{k_L} and
3<k_L<5. The observed evolution is similar to that observed for UVX and X-ray
selected AGN and is consistent with the same physical process being responsible
for the optical and radio luminosity evolution of AGN.Comment: 26 pages, 9 Figures, Accepted for Publication in A
Evaluation of sex differences in health-related quality of life outcomes associated with child abuse: Results from the Ontario Child Health Study
Aims. Despite the advances in child maltreatment research, there is still the need for comprehensive information about how abuse affects a broad range of categories of young adult functioning, and the extent to which these vary by sex. We examined the associations between child physical abuse (PA) and sexual abuse (SA) and six areas of functioning (mental health, physical health, life satisfaction, illegal substance use, alcohol problems and daily smoking). Methods. Data were obtained from the 1983 Ontario Child Health Study and follow-up in 2000/2001 (n = 1893). Multilevel regression estimated the adjusted associations for PA (with severity) and SA with each of the outcomes. Estimates with an entire sample were presented with sex-by-abuse interactions to examine sex differences and then presented separately by sex. Results. In the adjusted model, severe PA and SA were associated with impairment in mental health, and both forms of PA (severe and non-severe) and SA were associated with low life satisfaction. In addition, severe PA was associated with illegal substance use. Child abuse variables were not associated with poor physical health, alcohol problems or smoking. Although sex-stratified analyses revealed different patterns, there was no significant sex difference in the integrated sample. Conclusions. This is among the first community-based studies to show a strong association between child PA and SA and low life satisfaction in young adults. The abuse effects were similar for both sexes

Accurate evolutions of inspiralling neutron-star binaries: assessment of the truncation error
We have recently presented an investigation in full general relativity of the
dynamics and gravitational-wave emission from binary neutron stars which
inspiral and merge, producing a black hole surrounded by a torus (see
arXiv:0804.0594). We here discuss in more detail the convergence properties of
the results presented in arXiv:0804.0594 and, in particular, the deterioration
of the convergence rate at the merger and during the survival of the merged
object, when strong shocks are formed and turbulence develops. We also show
that physically reasonable and numerically convergent results obtained at
low-resolution suffer however from large truncation errors and hence are of
little physical use. We summarize our findings in an "error budget", which
includes the different sources of possible inaccuracies we have investigated
and provides a first quantitative assessment of the precision in the modelling

Stable radiation-controlling boundary conditions for the generalized harmonic Einstein equations
This paper is concerned with the initial-boundary value problem for the
Einstein equations in a first-order generalized harmonic formulation. We impose
boundary conditions that preserve the constraints and control the incoming
gravitational radiation by prescribing data for the incoming fields of the Weyl
tensor. High-frequency perturbations about any given spacetime (including a
shift vector with subluminal normal component) are analyzed using the
Fourier-Laplace technique. We show that the system is boundary-stable. In
addition, we develop a criterion that can be used to detect weak instabilities
with polynomial time dependence, and we show that our system does not suffer
from such instabilities. A numerical robust stability test supports our claim
that the initial-boundary value problem is most likely to be well-posed even if
