Human rights and public education
This article attempts a contrast to the contribution by Hugh Starkey. Rather than his account of the inexorable rise of human rights discourse, and of the implementation of human rights standards, human rights are here presented as always and necessarily scandalous and highly contested. First, I explain why the UK has lagged so far behind its European neighbours in implementing citizenship education. Second, a comparison with France shows that the latest UK reforms bring us up to 1789. Third, the twentieth-century second-generation social and economic rights are still anathema in the UK. Fourth, the failure to come to terms with Empire and especially the slave trade means that the UK’s attitude to third-generation rights, especially the right of peoples to self-determination, is heavily compromised. Taking into account the points I raise, citizenship education in the UK might look very different
Outcomes from a community‐based Positive Behavioural Support team for children and adults with developmental disabilities
Background:
Previous evaluations of community PBS teams have not investigated whether behaviour change is both statistically reliable and clinically significant. Few previous studies have reported quality of life (QoL) and social validity outcomes.
Method:
The present authors collected data on 85 people referred to a specialist PBS team. The present authors used a unique set of multiple measures and statistical change metrics to evaluate outcome.
Results:
Statistically significant improvements in QoL and health‐related QoL (HRQoL), with medium to large effect sizes, were demonstrated following PBS input. Mean Behaviour Problems Inventory‐Short Form scores reduced from 37.74 (SD = 30.54) at baseline to 12.12 (SD = 12.24) at follow‐up, with a large effect size (d = 0.84). Stakeholders reported valuing the process and outcomes of PBS, findings which support the social validity of PBS for people with developmental disabilities.
Conclusion:
This study demonstrates successful PBS outcomes in QoL, HRQoL, challenging behaviour and social validity in a community setting
Pro-active Meeting Assistants: Attention Please!
This paper gives an overview of pro-active meeting assistants, what they are and when they can be useful. We explain how to develop such assistants with respect to requirement definitions and elaborate on a set of Wizard of Oz experiments, aiming to find out in which form a meeting assistant should operate to be accepted by participants and whether the meeting effectiveness and efficiency can be improved by an assistant at all. Interpretation of inverted photocurrent transients in organic lead halide perovskite solar cells; proof of the field screening by mobile ions and determination of the space charge layer widths
In Methyl Ammonium Lead Iodide (MAPI) perovskite solar cells, screening of the built in field by mobile ions has been proposed as part of the cause of the large hysteresis observed in the current/voltage scans in many cells. We show that photocurrent transients measured immediately (e.g. 100 μs) after a voltage step can provide direct evidence that this field screening exists. Just after a step to forward bias, the photocurrent transients are reversed in sign (i.e. inverted), and the magnitude of the inverted transients can be used to find an upper bound on the width of the space charge layers adjacent to the electrodes. This in turn provides a lower bound on the mobile charge concentration, which we find to be 1 x 10 17 /cm 3 . Using a new photocurrent transient experiment, we show that the space charge layer thickness remains approximately constant as a function of bias, as expected for mobile ions in a solid electrolyte. We also discuss additional characteristics of the inverted photocurrent transients that imply either an unusually stable deep trapping, or a photo effect on the mobile ion conductivity
Pressurized rf cavities in ionizing beams
A muon collider or Higgs factory requires significant reduction of the six dimensional emittance of the beam prior to acceleration. One method to accomplish this involves building a cooling channel using high pressure gas filled radio frequency cavities. The performance of such a cavity when subjected to an intense particle beam must be investigated before this technology can be validated. To this end, a high pressure gas filled radio frequency (rf) test cell was built and placed in a 400 MeV beam line from the Fermilab linac to study the plasma evolution and its effect on the cavity. Hydrogen, deuterium, helium and nitrogen gases were studied. Additionally, sulfur hexafluoride and dry air were used as dopants to aid in the removal of plasma electrons. Measurements were made using a variety of beam intensities, gas pressures, dopant concentrations, and cavity rf electric fields, both with and without a 3 T external solenoidal magnetic field. Energy dissipation per electron-ion pair, electron-ion recombination rates, ion-ion recombination rates, and electron attachment times to SF6 and O-2 were measured.ope

Protracted timescales of lower crustal growth at the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise

plate tectonics. A majority of the crust at many ridges is composed of plutonic rocks
that form by crystallization of mantle-derived magmas within the crust. Recent
application of U/Pb dating to samples from in-situ oceanic crust has begun to
provide exciting new insight into the timing, duration and distribution of
magmatism during formation of the plutonic crust1-4. Previous studies have focused
on samples from slow-spreading ridges, however, the time scales and processes of
crustal growth are expected to vary with plate spreading rate. Here we present the
first high-precision dates from plutonic crust formed at the fast-spreading East
Pacific Rise (EPR). Individual zircon minerals yielded dates from 1.420–1.271
million years ago, with uncertainties of ± 0.006–0.081 million years. Within
individual samples, zircons record a range of dates of up to ~0.124 million years,
consistent with protracted crystallization or assimilation of older zircons from
adjacent rocks. The variability in dates is comparable to data from the Vema
lithospheric section on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR)3, suggesting that time scales
of magmatic processes in the lower crust may be similar at slow- and fast-spreading
ridges. This research was partially funded by NSF grant OCE-0727914 (SAB), a Cardiff

Measurements of the Absolute Branching Ratios for the Dominant KL Decays, the KL Lifetime, and Vus with the KLOE Detector
From a sample of about 10^9 Phi mesons produced at DAFNE, we have selected KL
mesons tagged by observing KS->pi+pi- decays. We present results on the major
KL branching ratios, including those of the semileptonic decays needed for the
determination of Vus. These branching ratio measurements are fully inclusive
with respect to final-state radiation. The KL lifetime has also been measured.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
A direct search for the CP-violating decay Ks->3p^0 with the KLOE detector at DAFNE
We have searched for the decay Ks->3p^0 with the KLOE experiment at DAFNE
using data from e^+ e^- collisions at a center of mass energy W= m(phi) for an
integrated luminosity L=450 pb^-1. The search has been performed with a pure Ks
beam obtained by tagging with Kl interactions in the calorimeter and detecting
six photons. We find an upper limit for the branching ratio of 1.2x10^-7 at 90%
