Hollywood Melodrama : « The Bad and the Beautiful ». Made in 1953 for MGM by Minnelli, The Bad and the Beautiful is in the first place a portrait of the producer Jonathan Shields, who is played by Kirk Douglas. However, this fictitious portrait alludes constantly and consistently to a set of historical facts which are themselves presented in code-form. Whilst Shields refers to David O. Selznick, it is less as an individual than as the prototype of the Hollywood producer. Similarly, the other characters conjure up easily recognizable models as they too are archetypal. Nine years later Minnelli completed a second « self-portrait » of the Hollywood cinema-industry, Two Weeks in Another Town, a film whose originality is twofold : Minnelli quotes excerpts from The Bad and the Beautiful as evidence of a golden age to be emulated ; yet he blurs the meaning of this cross-reference by assigning the main creative role to the director rather than to the producer.Réalisé par Minnelli pour la MGM en 1953, The Bad and the Beautiful est avant tout le portrait du producteur Janothan Shields, interprété par Kirk Douglas. Ce portrait imaginaire fait néanmoins référence, de manière répétée et cohérente, à une réalité historique, mais elle-même codée. Shields renvoie en effet à David O. Selznick moins en tant qu'individu que comme incarnation du producteur hollywoodien. De même, les autres protagonistes évoquent des « modèles » aisément reconnaissables car ils sont eux aussi stéréotypés et mythifiés. Neuf ans plus tard, Minnelli signe un nouvel autoportrait de la production hollywoodienne, Two Weeks in Another Town, qui présente une double originalité : citant textuellement The Bad and the Beautiful en l'invoquant comme témoignage d'un âge d'or dont il faut se montrer digne, il en brouille la signification, puisque le rôle créateur essentiel est attribué au metteur en scène et non plus au producteur.Bourget Jean-Loup.
