Speaking Up: Opening Dialogue with Pre-service and In-service Teachers about Reading Children’s Books Inclusive of Lesbian and Gay Families

One of the best ways to include all family structures in classroom practice is through children‘s literature. While more and more quality books depicting family diversity, inclusive of gay and lesbian families, are published every year, it is often the unknown discourse surrounding such readings and the unknown support of the teacher that keeps these books from even entering preschool through grade four classrooms

Comparison of Aerobic Base Training and High Intensity Race Pace Training for Cross-Country Runners: A Challenge of Tradition

    Get PDF
An aerobic base is considered the foundational fitness of an athlete which is usually established by completing endurance training. It consists of long, slow miles. This thesis aims to challenge the concept of traditional aerobic base training and introduces the idea of year-round high intensity training in cross-country runners. It proposes a study idea in which cross-country runners could train on primarily high intensity in and out of season, which may be used to help determine the role of an aerobic base and intensity in exercise programs. Coaches and exercise scientists were both surveyed about the potential new study idea to determine its value. The hypothetical study would challenge traditional running programs

Finishing Touches: Clothing and Accessories as Tokens of Cruelty and Evil in Rachilde and Barbey d’Aurevilly

    Get PDF
In decadent fiction, evil is manifested through perversion, a taste for torment, and the creation of sexual, gender, and moral transgressions. In Rachilde’s and Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly’s works, manifestations of evil and demonstrations of femininity are co-constructed. Each short story in Barbey’s Les Diaboliques (1874) foregrounds a different femme fatale whose beauty is perhaps only rivalled by her talent for cruelty. In each story, these women deceive, kill, and seduce with their good looks, or use their sensuality to captivate their male prey. The three stories that I focus on in this article, ‘Le Rideau cramoisi’ [The Crimson Curtain], ‘Le Plus bel amour de Don Juan’ [The Most Beautiful Love of Don Juan], and ‘Le Bonheur dans le crime’ [The happiness in crime], stage a cross-fertilization between appearance and cruelty that is comparable to another major piece of French decadent fiction, Rachilde’s well-known novel La Marquise de Sade (1887) in which the protagonist, Mary Barbe, is a young and fashionable misanthrope whose distaste for men and mankind is often sartorially determined. Her peculiar beauty and extravagant garments operate as a repository of tools and weapons that she uses to harm, torture, and humiliate the men around her

The Geopolitics of Refuge and Reproduction: Maternal Health and Healthcare of Congolese Refugees in Flight, Displacement, and Resettlement

    Get PDF
The purpose of this anthropological research is to examine and analyze the intertwined geopolitical complexities of the lived sexual, reproductive, and maternal health and healthcare experiences of female Congolese refugees in flight. These experiences are examined at three pivotal points of refugee flight: during protracted conflict and violence, in displacement, generally in neighboring East African countries, and during resettlement in Western contexts. Data were collected using two anthropological methodologies - targeted life history interviews and semi-structured qualitative ethnographic interviews. Supplemental data from related studies, reports, and literature reviews were also used for population-level information. Collected data were analyzed through the lenses of political economy, structural violence, and cultural hegemony. Using these frames of analysis, this research brings new insights to the interdisciplinary fields of refugee and migration studies with particular emphasis on the cultural and social considerations in a political economy lens of analysis. More specifically, it brings new insights to enhance the efficacy, sustainability, and subject-focused nature of East African refugee maternalhealth and healthcare policies. I argue that such policy enhancement must be led by the voices, experiences, and histories of those they are meant to serve - Congolese refugee women. Moreover, I suggest that this approach be protected and funded by a multilateral coalition of refugee-focused women’s health and healthcare agencies and initiatives at the grassroots to the global scale. Thus, an overarching goal of this research is to contribute to the decolonization of the Western-centric knowledge and power structures at play in the institutions and organizations meant to support the health and healthcare of Congolese refugee women and refugee women in general

Perceived Leadership Development as a Result of Martial Arts Training

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of martial arts training on the individual\u27s leadership in the workplace. Martial arts training develops leadership skills and traits that include self-control, focus, attaining goals, and respect of self and others. The research was conducted using a survey tool to explore if perceived leadership traits were learned within a martial arts training school and transferred to the workplace. The survey was completed by adult students of the National Karate Schools in Minnesota. The statements referred to non-physical skills learned in martial arts and if those skills were evident in the workplace. Martial arts\u27 training does impact leadership skills and traits according to the results of the survey

A Wellness Program for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

    Get PDF
When researching wellness programs for adults with developmental disabilities, the authors found there to be several barriers to wellness for this population, with one of these barriers being physical activity. Many adults with developmental disabilities do not engage in adequate amounts of physical activity (Havercamp, Scandlin, and Roth, 2004). This may be impart to inadequate access to transportation to get to and from the fitness facility (Heller, Hsieh, & Rimmer, 2004; U.S. Public Health Service, 2001), the cost of joining a fitness facility program (Heller, Hsieh, & Rimmer, 2004; Temple & Walkley, 2007), or challenges in accessing fitness equipment (Heller, Hsieh, & Rimmer, 2002; Temple & Walkley, 2007). Another challenge facing adults with developmental disabilities is nutrition. One problem currently being experienced in this area is that the nutrition material is not printed at a low enough reading level for those with developmental disabilities to read and follow through (Carlson, 2002). Without the proper education and training on nutrition, individuals with developmental disabilities are not going to be able to engage in the proper diet that best suits their needs. Currently, there are only three wellness programs designed to meet the needs of this population. However, these programs are not holistic and have limitations. Therefore, the purpose of this scholarly project is to develop a wellness program that meets all of the unique wellness needs of adults with developmental disabilities in order to increase their overall the health and well-being. The methodology used to conduct this scholarly project was an extensive review of literature. From the information obtained through the various literature reviews, the authors developed a holistic wellness program to meet the unique needs of adults with developmental disabilities. The product of the wellness program includes a workbook for the adults with developmental disabilities, or the participants, and interdisciplinary team guide, which contains protocols to follow when implementing the wellness activities. Activities addressed within the workbook and the interdisciplinary guide are nutrition, physical activities, and environmental wellness activities. The nutrition activities include the following: health benefits, food pyramid, meal planning, favorite foods, serving sizes, nutrition games, and grocery store outings. There are also a variety of activities listed for physical activities, such as: dance classes, tai-chi, intramural sports, walking club, exercise equipment, yoga, Pilates, and cardio class
