DFTCalc: a tool for efficient fault tree analysis
Effective risk management is a key to ensure that our nuclear power plants, medical equipment, and power grids are dependable; and it is often required by law. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is a widely used methodology here, computing important dependability measures like system reliability. This paper presents DFTCalc, a powerful tool for FTA, providing (1) efficient fault tree modelling via compact representations; (2) effective analysis, allowing a wide range of dependability properties to be analysed (3) efficient analysis, via state-of-the-art stochastic techniques; and (4) a flexible and extensible framework, where gates can easily be changed or added. Technically, DFTCalc is realised via stochastic model checking, an innovative technique offering a wide plethora of powerful analysis techniques, including aggressive compression techniques to keep the underlying state space small
DFTCalc: reliability centered maintenance via fault tree analysis (tool paper)
Reliability, availability, maintenance and safety (RAMS) analysis is essential in the evaluation of safety critical systems like nuclear power plants and the railway infrastructure. A widely used methodology within RAMS analysis are fault trees, representing failure propagations throughout a system. We present DFTCalc, a tool-set to conduct quantitative analysis on dynamic fault trees including the effect of a maintenance strategy on the system dependability
Confluence reduction for Markov automata
Markov automata are a novel formalism for specifying systems exhibiting nondeterminism, probabilistic choices and Markovian rates. Recently, the process algebra MAPA was introduced to efficiently model such systems. As always, the state space explosion threatens the analysability of the models generated by such specifications. We therefore introduce confluence reduction for Markov automata, a powerful reduction technique to keep these models small. We define the notion of confluence directly on Markov automata, and discuss how to syntactically detect confluence on the MAPA language as well. That way, Markov automata generated by MAPA specifications can be reduced on-the-fly while preserving divergence-sensitive branching bisimulation. Three case studies demonstrate the significance of our approach, with reductions in analysis time up to an order of magnitude
Rare event simulation for dynamic fault trees
Fault trees (FT) are a popular industrial method for reliability engineering, for which Monte Carlo simulation is an important technique to estimate common dependability metrics, such as the system reliability and availability. A severe drawback of Monte Carlo simulation is that the number of simulations required to obtain accurate estimations grows extremely large in the presence of rare events, i.e., events whose probability of occurrence is very low, which typically holds for failures in highly reliable systems. This paper presents a novel method for rare event simulation of dynamic fault trees with complex repairs that requires only a modest number of simulations, while retaining statistically justified confidence intervals. Our method exploits the importance sampling technique for rare event simulation, together with a compositional state space generation method for dynamic fault trees. We demonstrate our approach using two parameterized sets of case studies, showing that our method can handle fault trees that could not be evaluated with either existing analytical techniques, nor with standard simulation techniques
QuantUM: Quantitative Safety Analysis of UML Models
When developing a safety-critical system it is essential to obtain an
assessment of different design alternatives. In particular, an early safety
assessment of the architectural design of a system is desirable. In spite of
the plethora of available formal quantitative analysis methods it is still
difficult for software and system architects to integrate these techniques into
their every day work. This is mainly due to the lack of methods that can be
directly applied to architecture level models, for instance given as UML
diagrams. Also, it is necessary that the description methods used do not
require a profound knowledge of formal methods. Our approach bridges this gap
and improves the integration of quantitative safety analysis methods into the
development process. All inputs of the analysis are specified at the level of a
UML model. This model is then automatically translated into the analysis model,
and the results of the analysis are consequently represented on the level of
the UML model. Thus the analysis model and the formal methods used during the
analysis are hidden from the user. We illustrate the usefulness of our approach

One Net Fits All: A unifying semantics of Dynamic Fault Trees using GSPNs
Dynamic Fault Trees (DFTs) are a prominent model in reliability engineering.
They are strictly more expressive than static fault trees, but this comes at a
price: their interpretation is non-trivial and leaves quite some freedom. This
paper presents a GSPN semantics for DFTs. This semantics is rather simple and
compositional. The key feature is that this GSPN semantics unifies all existing
DFT semantics from the literature. All semantic variants can be obtained by

Quantitative Timed Analysis of Interactive Markov Chains
Abstract This paper presents new algorithms and accompanying tool support for analyzing interactive Markov chains (IMCs), a stochastic timed 1 1 2-player game in which delays are exponentially distributed. IMCs are compositional and act as semantic model for engineering for-malisms such as AADL and dynamic fault trees. We provide algorithms for determining the extremal expected time of reaching a set of states, and the long-run average of time spent in a set of states. The prototypical tool Imca supports these algorithms as well as the synthesis of ε-optimal piecewise constant timed policies for timed reachability objectives. Two case studies show the feasibility and scalability of the algorithms.
