    An employer brand predictive model for talent attraction and retention

    Orientation: In an ever shrinking global talent pool organisations use employer brand to attract and retain talent, however, in the absence of theoretical pointers, many organisations are losing out on a powerful business tool by not developing or maintaining their employer brand correctly. Research purpose: This study explores the current state of knowledge about employer brand and identifies the various employer brand building blocks which are conceptually integrated in a predictive model. Motivation for the study: The need for scientific progress though the accurate representation of a set of employer brand phenomena and propositions, which can be empirically tested, motivated this study. Research design, approach and method: This study was nonempirical in approach and searched for linkages between theoretical concepts by making use of relevant contextual data. Theoretical propositions which explain the identified linkages were developed for purpose of further empirical research. Main findings: Key findings suggested that employer brand is influenced by target group needs, a differentiated Employer Value Proposition (EVP), the people strategy, brand consistency, communication of the employer brand and measurement of Human Resources (HR) employer branding efforts. Practical/managerial implications: The predictive model provides corporate leaders and their human resource functionaries a theoretical pointer relative to employer brand which could guide more effective talent attraction and retention decisions. Contribution/value add: This study adds to the small base of research available on employer brand and contributes to both scientific progress as well as an improved practical understanding of factors which influence employer brand

    Observations on the ecology of Pleurobrachia pileus (Ctenophora) in the southern Benguela ecosystem

    The vertical distribution, abundance and size composition of a population of Pleurobrachia pileus was studied during a six-day drogue study conducted off the west coast of South Africa in February 1995. The population was centred in deep water, possibly because of the presence of a potential predator, Beroe sp., at shallower depths. The population of P. pileus failed to display clear patterns of migration, although nocturnal recruitment from deeper water resulted in a deepening of the depth of occupation then. The population was dominated by individuals <4 mm polar diameter, and large animals were confined to the upper water layers. These results are discussed with reference to possible spawning activities. Using published equations relating size to clearance rates, it was estimated that the population could remove up to 27% of integrated mesozooplankton standing stocks, and in excess of 100% (293%) at some depths.Web of Scienc

    Antimicrobial susceptibility profile of selected bacteraemic pathogens from private institutions in South Africa

    Objectives. The National Antimicrobial Surveillance Forum is a continuous  surveillance organisation comprising all academic/ public and private   sector  laboratories in South Africa.Methods. The antibiotic susceptibility of blood culture isolates of  Escherichia  coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter species,   Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus  aureus from patients in private hospitals in five major centres were  investigated. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed by 12  participating laboratories  according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI)  guidelines. Extended-spectrum 13-lactamase (ESBL)  production was  determined in selected species of Enterobacteriaceae  irrespective of source.Results. The overall prevalence of ampicillin resistance in blood culture isolates of E. coli (N = 471) was 84%, and 20% were resistant to the  fluoroquinolones. Considerable geographical differences were noted   between the centres with regard to the K. pneumoniae (N = 636) resistance rates for ceftriaxone and/ or cefotaxime (39- 87%). The most active   agents in the Enterobacter spp. (N = 244) were imipenem/meropenem, ertapenem, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and cefepime, with 100%,94%, 88%, 87% and 80% susceptibility, respectively. Carbapenem resistance in P. aeruginosa (N = 382) varied between 42% and 45%, and in the case of A. baumannii (N= 190) resistance varied between 32% and 33% for   meropenem and imipenem respectively. The nationwide incidence of  oxacillin resistance in S. aureus (N = 629) was 36%. Overall, the  prevalence of ESBL production among all isolates of K. pneumoniae was 26% (N = 7 514), while in Enterobacter spp. it was 12% (N = 4 031) and in E. coli 5% (N = 28 412).Conclusions. The data highlight the widespread problem of antibiotic  resistance among important bacteraemic pathogens in private institutions in South Africa. Continued surveillance is vital to guide appropriate  empirical therapy for invasive infections

    Education And Small Business Growth: A Gender Perspective Of Two Divergent Provinces In South Africa

    The article attempts to identify whether the level of education and gender has an impact on the business growth of SMMEs in a developing economy. The study furthermore looks at the contribution made by the SMME sector from a spatial perspective. The Western Cape is seen as a more affluent province and a bigger contributor to the country’s GDP as opposed to KwaZulu-Natal, which comprises of the former province of Natal and the Zululand homelands. Entrepreneurship can be considered as one of the means of creating an enabling environment conducive to reducing poverty, stimulating economic growth, and creating employment opportunities, particularly in a South African context. Hence, activities in the SMME sector are often considered to be the bedrock of an economy and a key driver of growth and development. This holds most true for women assuming the role of entrepreneur, especially in developing countries. This study aims to explore and test this delicate relationship between women entrepreneurs and SMME sustainability, and to conduct empirical investigations into high-density SMME operations in two South African provinces. Survey data were collected from SMME owners/managers in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces of South Africa. In building on previous academic literature on SMME sustainability and women in business, various measures are developed and tested for reliability and validity. The study is cross-sectional in design, making use of trained fieldworkers to administer face-to-face surveys to a diverse set of SMMEs. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 465 owners/managers in the two provinces. The findings show (i) a positive relationship between a business owner’s/manager’s level of education and business growth, (ii) no correlation between a business owner’s/manager’s education and employment, and (iii) no relationship between gender and business growth. The findings of the study can benefit the South African Government in directing policy, SMME owners, educators and women in business by increasing awareness of the nature of sustainable SMMEs, and the effect of operational skills, gender and education on the development thereof. This study focuses on the growing sector of women in business and the impact of education in SMMEs linked toward business sustainability. A contribution is made toward theory development through empirical research

    MRI findings in chronic exertional compartment syndrome of the forearm : using signal intensity ratio as a diagnostic tool

    BACKGROUND : Chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) of the forearm is a rare but important cause of morbidity amongst athletes involved in strenuous upper limb activities. The diagnosis remains challenging due to the absence of objective, reproducible diagnostic studies. OBJECTIVES : To assess and quantify signal intensity (SI) changes of involved muscles in patients with CECS of the forearm compared to healthy control subjects competing in similar sporting disciplines. Also, to objectively measure MRI SIs within muscle compartments when using a pre- and post-exercise regime and calculating a signal intensity ratio (SIR) between post- and pre-exercise studies. METHOD : The study retrospectively examined MRI scans of patients treated for CECS of the forearm and compared these to the MRI scans of asymptomatic high-level rowers. A specific, reproducible pre- and post-exercise MRI scanning protocol was utilised in both patient and control subjects between 2011 and 2020. Signal intensities were evaluated pre- and post- exercise in involved muscle groups and ratios were calculated. RESULTS : A total of 86 SIs were measured (43 pre- and 43 post-exercise) in nine study participants (five patients and four controls). After post:pre-exercise comparisons, a statistically significant difference was found between control and patient groups (p = 0.0010). The extensor carpi radialis, flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum superficialis muscles were most commonly involved. CONCLUSION : This study confirms that significant SI changes are apparent in patients with CECS of the forearm when making use of a standardised pre- and post-exercise MRI protocol.     Cytomegalovirus acquisition in infancy and the risk of tuberculosis disease in childhood: a longitudinal birth cohort study in Cape Town, South Africa

    BACKGROUND: The risk of tuberculosis disease after recent exposure is greatest before age 5 years; however, the mechanisms explaining this increased risk are not well elucidated. Acquisition of viral infections, such as cytomegalovirus, in early life might modulate the immune system. We aimed to evaluate the acquisition of cytomegalovirus infection in infancy and the development of tuberculosis disease in children. METHODS: In this prospective, birth cohort study we enrolled pregnant women who were between 20 and 28 weeks of gestation attending antenatal care in Paarl, a periurban setting outside of Cape Town, South Africa. Participants were recruited from two clinics (TC Newman and Mbekweni). Infants were given Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccination at birth as per national policy. Nasopharyngeal swabs for cytomegalovirus detection using qPCR were done for infants at birth, age 3 and 6 weeks, and age 3, 6, 12, and 24 months. Children were prospectively followed up for tuberculosis disease until age 9 years using tuberculin skin testing, radiographic examinations, GeneXpert, and sputum testing. Tuberculin skin tests were done at the 6-month visit and then at age 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60 months, and at the time of lower respiratory tract infection. We compared tuberculosis disease incidence after age 1 year or after age 6 months in children with and without cytomegalovirus infection using Cox regression and hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% CIs. FINDINGS: Between March 5, 2012, and March 31, 2015, 1225 pregnant women were recruited and enrolled in the birth cohort. 88 (7%) women were excluded because of loss to antenatal follow-up or pregnancy losses. Of 1143 livebirths, 68 (6%) mother-infant pairs were excluded. In total, 963 children were serially tested for cytomegalovirus (7186 cytomegalovirus measurements taken; median six tests per child, IQR 2-11). The prevalence of congenital cytomegalovirus at age younger than 3 weeks was 2% (18 of 816). Cytomegalovirus positivity increased continuously with age from 3% (27 of 825) by age 6 weeks to 21% (183 of 882) by 3 months, 35% (315 of 909) by 6 months, and 42% (390 of 933) by 12 months. Mother-infant pairs were followed up for a median of 6·9 years (IQR 6·0-7·8). The risk of tuberculosis disease in children after age 1 year was higher in those with cytomegalovirus infection by age 6 weeks (adjusted HR 4·1, 95% CI 1·2-13·8; p=0·022), 3 months (2·8, 1·4-5·8; p=0·0040), 6 months (3·6, 1·7-7·3; p<0·0001), 12 months (3·2, 1·6-6·4; p=0·0010), and 24 months (4·2, 2·0-8·8; p<0·0001). The risk of microbiologically confirmed tuberculosis disease was also higher among children acquiring cytomegalovirus infection before age 3 months (adjusted HR 3·2, 95% CI 1·0-10·6; p=0·048), 6 months (3·9, 1·2-13·0; p=0·027), 12 months (4·4, 1·2-16·3; p=0·027), and 24 months (6·1, 1·3-27·9; p=0·020). In children older than 1 year, the risk of tuberculosis disease was consistently greater in those with high cytomegalovirus loads than in those with low cytomegalovirus loads that were acquired before age 3 months (adjusted HR 2·0 vs 3·7; ptrend=0·0020; both groups compared with cytomegalovirus negative reference) and before age 12 months (2·7 vs 3·7; ptrend=0·0009). INTERPRETATION: Infants that acquire cytomegalovirus in the first year of life are at high risk of subsequently developing tuberculosis disease. Efforts to prevent tuberculosis in early childhood in high-burden countries might need to deter or delay acquisition of cytomegalovirus perinatally or in the first months of life.     Siphonophores from surface waters of the Colombian Pacific Ocean

    Siphonophores are colonial hydrozoans that feed on zooplankton including fish larvae, and occur throughout the world’s oceans from surface waters to ocean depths. Here we describe the composition of hyponeustonic siphonophores (0 – 3 m depth) from the tropical Colombian Pacific Ocean based on 131 plankton samples collected between June – October from 2001 – 2004. Samples were dominated by species of Calycophorae, with only three species of Physonectae identified, consistent with their deeper depth distribution. Muggiaea atlantica, Chelophyes contorta, Diphyes dispar, and Eudoxoides mitra were the most common of the 21 species identified. We found moderate structuring of the siphonophore community by the salinity gradient from inshore to offshore, and greater richness during the night because of diel vertical migration. Temperature did not play a significant role in structuring siphonophore communities, perhaps because of the narrow temperature range observed (3.5 8C). We extend the known temperature and salinity range of several species, including M. atlantica up to temperatures of 28.6 8C and salinities down to 24.7. Interestingly, only polygastric stages of M. atlantica were found, suggesting the reproductive stage of M. atlantica in tropical waters might be found in deeper waters. Chelophyes appendiculata was rare in our study and C. contorta was common, providing evidence they have a potential allopatric relationship, with C. contorta replacing C. appendiculata in warm water. Finally, we found siphonophore abundance was positively related to the abundance of copepods and fish eggs, with the top 13 most abundant species all having positive correlations, suggesting siphonophore abundances are tightly controlled by their food

    Natural and hybrid immunity following four COVID-19 waves: A prospective cohort study of mothers in South Africa

    BACKGROUND: More than half the global population has been exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Naturally induced immunity influences the outcome of subsequent exposure to variants and vaccine responses. We measured anti-spike IgG responses to explore the basis for this enhanced immunity. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of mothers in a South African community through ancestral/beta/delta/omicron SARS-CoV-2 waves (March 2020-February 2022). Health seeking behaviour/illness were recorded and post-wave serum samples probed for IgG to Spike (CoV2-S-IgG) by ECLISA. To estimate protective CoV2-S-IgG threshold levels, logistic functions were fit to describe the correlation of CoV2-S-IgG measured before a wave and the probability for seroconversion/boosting thereafter for unvaccinated and vaccinated adults. FINDINGS: Despite little disease, 176/339 (51·9%) participants were seropositive following wave 1, rising to 74%, 89·8% and 97·3% after waves 2, 3 and 4 respectively. CoV2-S-IgG induced by natural exposure protected against subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection with the greatest protection for beta and least for omicron. Vaccination induced higher CoV2-S-IgG in seropositive compared to naïve vaccinees. Amongst seropositive participants, proportions above the 50% protection against infection threshold were 69% (95% CrI: 62, 72) following 1 vaccine dose, 63% (95% CrI: 63, 75) following 2 doses and only 11% (95% CrI: 7, 14) in unvaccinated during the omicron wave. INTERPRETATION: Naturally induced CoV2-S-IgG do not achieve high enough levels to prevent omicron infection in most exposed individuals but are substantially boosted by vaccination leading to significant protection. A single vaccination in those with prior immunity is more immunogenic than 2 doses in a naïve vaccinee and may provide adequate protection.
