Measurement of the half-life of the T= mirror decay of Ne and its implication on physics beyond the standard model
The superallowed mixed mirror decay
of Ne to F is excellently suited for high precision studies of
the weak interaction. However, there is some disagreement on the value of the
half-life. In a new measurement we have determined this quantity to be
= s, which differs
from the previous world average by 3 standard deviations. The impact of this
measurement on limits for physics beyond the standard model such as the
presence of tensor currents is discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

The proton and deuteron F_2 structure function at low Q^2
Measurements of the proton and deuteron structure functions are
presented. The data, taken at Jefferson Lab Hall C, span the four-momentum
transfer range GeV, and Bjorken values from 0.009 to
0.45, thus extending the knowledge of to low values of at low .
Next-to-next-to-leading order calculations using recent parton distribution
functions start to deviate from the data for GeV at the low and
high -values. Down to the lowest value of , the structure function is
in good agreement with a parameterization of based on data that have been
taken at much higher values of or much lower values of , and which is
constrained by data at the photon point. The ratio of the deuteron and proton
structure functions at low remains well described by a logarithmic
dependence on at low .Comment: 3 figures, submitted pape
Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the âspinal cord injury-falls concern scaleâ in the Italian population
Study design: Psychometrics study. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop an Italian version of the Spinal Cord Injury-Falls Concern Scale (SCI-FCS) and examine its reliability and validity. Setting: Multicenter study in spinal units in Northern and Southern Italy. The scale also was administered to non-hospitalized outpatient clinic patients. Methods: The original scale was translated from English to Italian using the âTranslation and Cultural Adaptation of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measuresâ guidelines. The reliability and validity of the culturally adapted scale were assessed following the âConsensus-Based Standards for the Selection of Health Status Measurement Instrumentsâ checklist. The SCI-FCS-I internal consistency, inter-rater, and intra-rater reliability were examined using Cronbachâs alpha coefficient and the intraclass correlation coefficient, respectively. Concurrent validity was evaluated using Pearsonâs correlation coefficient with the Italian version of the short form of the Wheelchair Use Confidence Scale for Manual Wheelchair Users (WheelCon-M-I-short form). Results: The Italian version of the SCI-FCS-I was administered to 124 participants from 1 June to 30 September 2017. The mean ± SD of the SCI-FCS-I score was 16.73 ± 5.88. All SCI-FCS items were either identical or similar in meaning to the original versionâs items. Cronbachâs α was 0.827 (p < 0.01), the inter-rater reliability was 0.972 (p < 0.01), and the intra-rater reliability was 0.973 (p < 0.01). Pearsonâs correlation coefficient of the SCI-FCS-I scores with the WheelCon-M-I-short form was 0.56 (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The SCI-FCS-I was found to be reliable and a valid outcome measure for assessing manual wheelchair concerns about falling in the Italian population
The changing patterns of group politics in Britain
Two interpretations of ways in which group politics in Britain have presented challenges to democracy are reviewed: neo-corporatism or pluralistic stagnation and the rise of single issue interest groups. The disappearance of the first paradigm created a political space for the second to emerge. A three-phase model of group activity is developed: a phase centred around production interests, followed by the development of broadly based 'other regarding' groups, succeeded by fragmented, inner directed groups focusing on particular interests. Explanations of the decay of corporatism are reviewed. Single issue group activity has increased as party membership has declined and is facilitated by changes in traditional media and the development of the internet. Such groups can overload the policy-making process and frustrate depoliticisation. Debates about the constitution and governance have largely ignored these issues and there is need for a debate

The pd <--> pi+ t reaction around the Delta resonance
The pd pi+ t process has been calculated in the energy region around the
Delta-resonance with elementary production/absorption mechanisms involving one
and two nucleons. The isobar degrees of freedom have been explicitly included
in the two-nucleon mechanism via pi-- and rho-exchange diagrams. No free
parameters have been employed in the analysis since all the parameters have
been fixed in previous studies on the simpler pp pi+ d process. The
treatment of the few-nucleon dynamics entailed a Faddeev-based calculation of
the reaction, with continuum calculations for the initial p-d state and
accurate solutions of the three-nucleon bound-state equation. The integral
cross-section was found to be quite sensitive to the NN interaction employed
while the angular dependence showed less sensitivity. Approximately a 4% effect
was found for the one-body mechanism, for the three-nucleon dynamics in the p-d
channel, and for the inclusion of a large, possibly converged, number of
three-body partial states, indicating that these different aspects are of
comparable importance in the calculation of the spin-averaged observables.Comment: 40 Pages, RevTex, plus 5 PostScript figure
Longitudinal-Transverse Separations of Structure Functions at Low for Hydrogen and Deuterium
We report on a study of the longitudinal to transverse cross section ratio,
, at low values of and , as determined from
inclusive inelastic electron-hydrogen and electron-deuterium scattering data
from Jefferson Lab Hall C spanning the four-momentum transfer range 0.06 GeV. Even at the lowest values of , remains
nearly constant and does not disappear with decreasing , as expected. We
find a nearly identical behaviour for hydrogen and deuterium.Comment: 4 pages, 2 gigure
