    Dynamics and inertia of skyrmionic spin structures

    Skyrmions are topologically protected winding vector fields characterized by a spherical topology. Magnetic skyrmions can arise as the result of the interplay of various interactions, including exchange, dipolar and anisotropy energy in the case of magnetic bubbles and an additional Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the case of chiral skyrmions. Whereas the static and low-frequency dynamics of skyrmions are already well under control, their gigahertz dynamical behaviour has not been directly observed in real space. Here, we image the gigahertz gyrotropic eigenmode dynamics of a single magnetic bubble and use its trajectory to experimentally confirm its skyrmion topology. The particular trajectory points to the presence of strong inertia, with a mass much larger than predicted by existing theories. This mass is endowed by the topological confinement of the skyrmion and the energy associated with its size change. It is thereby expected to be found in all skyrmionic structures in magnetic systems and beyond. Our experiments demonstrate that the mass term plays a key role in describing skyrmion dynamics.

    Magnetic resonance-guided biopsy of suspicious breast lesions with a handheld vacuum biopsy device

    PURPOSE: To evaluate a handheld vacuum-assisted device system for magnetic resonance image (MRI)-guided breast lesion biopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 32 patients, a total of 42 suspicious breast lesions (mean diameter 7.5 mm for mass lesions, 11.6 mm for non-masslike diffuse lesions) seen with MRI (no suspicious changes in breast ultrasound or mammography) were biopsied (27 lateral, 15 medial) using a 10G vacuum-assisted breast biopsy device under MR guidance. Histology of biopsy specimens was compared with final histology after surgery or follow-up in benign lesions. RESULTS: In all biopsies, technical success was achieved. Histology revealed 11 lesions with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) or invasive cancer, three with intermediate lesions (LCIS) and 28 with benign breast lesions (adenosis, infected hematoma). In one patient with discordant results of MRI and histology, surgical excision revealed medullary cancer. In the follow-up (mean 18 months) of the histological benign lesions, no breast cancer development was observed. Besides minor complications (hematoma, n = 6), with no further therapeutic interventions, no complications occurred. CONCLUSION: MRI-guided breast lesion biopsy using a handheld vacuum-assisted device is a safe and effective method for the work-up of suspicious lesions seen with breast MRI without changes in mammography or ultrasound. In the case of discordant histology of vacuum biopsy and breast MRI appearance, surgical excision is recommended

    For separation of diagnosis beams from the main beam of high-performance solid state lasers a diffractive beam separator has been developed consisting of a quartz block. Into one face of the quartz block a grid of defined structure has been etched and the second face was coated with an antireflective layer. On the side front of the quartz block a focussing hologram is positioned regenerating the original sectional area of the main beam and enabling thus a real-time control of the spatial beam profil. The separation ratio (0.2%-1.1%) are independent on the power of the incident beam. The quality of the diagnosis beam is equal to that of the main beam. The grids are beam-resistant up to 2 kW. By application of such grid separators an improved performance control of the solid state laser system is achieved.
