La nation contre le peuple. Le débat sur la vérification commune des mandats aux États généraux de 1789

The Nation versus the people. the debate on the joint verifica­tion of mandates to the estates general (1789) The naming of the Assembly to came out of the joint verification of mandates divided the House of Commons during the Estates General session in May and June, 1789. The Third Estate hesitated between « Assembly of Representatives of the People » (Mirabeau's motion) and « National Assembly » (Sieyès' motion). While the meaning of the concept of «people » in the opinion of that time may explain the Third Estate's hesitation, it is more surprising that « nation » and « people » should clash in a parliamentary duel. The debate led to an essential political clarification of the definition and status of each of the two concepts as well as on the paradoxical relation between «people» and «nation». The joint verification of mandates appeared as an inaugural ritual whose symbolic function was much more important than its judicial function for the fledgling representative system.La dénomination de l'Assemblée issue de la vérification commune des mandats divise la Chambre des communes aux Etats généraux durant les mois de mai et juin 1789. Le Tiers Etat hésite entre « l'Assemblée des représentants du peuple » (motion de Mirabeau) et « l'Assemblée nationale » (motion de Sieyès). Si l'acception du concept de « peuple » dans l'opinion de l'époque pourrait expliquer l'hésitation du Tiers Etat, il est plus surprenant en revanche que « nation » et « peuple » s'affrontent dans un duel parlementaire. Ce débat est l'occasion d'une mise au point politique primordiale sur la définition et le statut de chaque concept ainsi que sur le lien paradoxal qui s'établit entre « peuple » et « nation ». La vérification commune des mandats y apparaît comme un rituel inaugural dont la fonction symbolique est autrement plus importante pour le système représentatif naissant que la fonction juridictionnelle.Boroumand Ladan. Postface : reflections on the past, present and future of emigre studies

In this chapter, I hope to explore ( 1) my own engagement with the field of emigre studies, (2) my decision to develop other aspects of my work and ( 3) how the state of the field has been fruitfully transformed since I took that decision. Finally, I hope to offer a few ideas for how we might connect our work in the future while drawing on the foundational labour of two generations of emigre scholars. In doing so, I will not pretend to offer a comprehensive overview-I consider only what has crossed my horizon in the last twenty-five years. By taking this modest route, I hope to make a further small contribution to the field of emigre studies
