Effects of polyphenols in Down Syndrome

Introduction : Down syndrome (DS) is the most common disability in men and women, affecting one new born every 700 births. It is characterised by facial and physical features, having communication difficulties, specially with written and expressive language. There would be a potential link between DS and oxidative stress. Phenolic compounds are the result of vegetable’s secondary metabolism, where they are plentiful. Given the good results shown by the polyphenols, it would be useful to study their potential effects. Objective : Review of current scientific literature on the effects of polyphenols in Down Syndrome. Methodology : Literature review based on the research of the main data bases: PubMed, SciELO, EBSCO and CUIDEN. Results : Positive results have been obtained with the effects of the treatment carried out with polyphenols in DS. There is an improvement in cognitive and skeletal impairment. They have a corrective effect on brain alterations. There is also an improvement in some of the craniofacial characteristics and the mitochondrials functionality. Discussion : A total of 16 technical papers investigating the effects of polyphenols have been found. The lack of additional information is a limitation for the study. For this reason, it is necessary to further research in spite of having obtained very positive results. Conclusions : Good and positive results have been obtained in EGCG and RSV, despite the few pieces of research carried out so far.Medicin
