    Effects of wall curvature on the dynamics of an impinging jet and resulting heat transfer

    The effects of wall curvature on the dynamics of a round subsonic jet impinging on a concave surface are investigated for the first time by direct numerical solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Impinging jets on curved surfaces are of interest in several applications, such as the impingement cooling of gas turbine blades. The simulation is performed at Reynolds and Mach numbers respectively equal to 3, 300 and 0.8. The impingement wall is kept at a constant temperature, 80 K higher than that of the jet at the inlet. The nozzle-to-plate distance (measured along the jet axis) is set to 5D, with D the nozzle diameter. In order to highlight the curvature effects, the present results are compared to a previous study of jet impinging on a flat plate. The specific influence of wall curvature is investigated through a frequency analysis based on discrete Fourier transform and dynamic mode decomposition. We found that the peak frequencies of the heat transfer also dominate the dynamics of primary vortices in the free jet region and secondary vortices produced by the interaction of primary vortices and the target plate. These frequencies are approximately 30% lower than those found in the reference study of impinging jet on a flat plate. Imperceptible differences were instead found in the time-averaged integral heat transfer

    Complexity of Generic Limit Sets of Cellular Automata

    The generic limit set of a topological dynamical system of the smallest closed subset of the phase space that has a comeager realm of attraction. It intuitively captures the asymptotic dynamics of almost all initial conditions. It was defined by Milnor and studied in the context of cellular automata, whose generic limit sets are subshifts, by Djenaoui and Guillon. In this article we study the structural and computational restrictions that apply to generic limit sets of cellular automata. As our main result, we show that the language of a generic limit set can be at most Σ30\Sigma^0_3-hard, and lower in various special cases. We also prove a structural restriction on generic limit sets with a global period.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figure

    The Influence of Bio-syngas Composition on the Derating of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells☆

    Abstract In this work, the performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) fed with a syngas obtained from a steam-enriched air gasification of biomass has been investigated, varying the composition of the feeding gas (H2, CO, CO2, CH4, H2O, and N2). The composition has been obtained from experimental/numerical tests in a fluidized bed bench scale gasifier after catalytic steam reforming of the syngas carried out to remove tar. During the gasification tests, the oxygen purity in the enriched air (in the range of 0.2 and 0.9), the gasification process temperature (in the range of 750 and 850 °C), the steam to biomass (in the range of 0.5 and 1) and the equivalence ratio (in the range between 0.0 and 0.4) were varied to simulate the different operating conditions. Commercial SOFC cells have been employed in the experimental campaign, fed with the most representative fuel compositions mentioned above. Polarization curves have been carried out to determine the electrical performance of the cells, comparing the results with cells fed with hydrogen only. In the final paper, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) will be reported for in-depth analysis of the performance parameters and to evaluate the long term degradation rate of the cell

    Obstetric anal sphincter injury: a systematic review of information available on the internet.

    OBJECTIVE: There is no systematic evaluation of online health information pertaining to obstetric anal sphincter injury. Therefore, we evaluated the accuracy, credibility, reliability, and readability of online information concerning obstetric anal sphincter injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Multiple search engines were searched. The first 30 webpages were identified for each keyword and considered eligible if they provided information regarding obstetric anal sphincter injury. Eligible webpages were assessed by two independent researchers for accuracy (prioritised criteria based upon the RCOG Third and Fourth Degree Tear guideline); credibility; reliability; and readability. RESULTS: Fifty-eight webpages were included. Seventeen webpages (30%) had obtained Health On the Net certification, or Information Standard approval and performed better than those without such approvals (p = 0.039). The best overall performing website was http://www.pat.nhs.uk (score of 146.7). A single webpage (1%) fulfilled the entire criteria for accuracy with a score of 18: www.tamesidehospital.nhs.uk . Twenty-nine webpages (50%) were assessed as credible (scores ≥7). A single webpage achieved a maximum credibility score of 10: www.meht.nhs.uk . Over a third (21 out of 58) were rated as poor or very poor. The highest scoring webpage was http://www.royalsurrey.nhs.uk (score 62). No webpage met the recommended Flesch Reading Ease Score above 70. The intra-class coefficient between researchers was 0.98 (95% CI 0.96-0.99) and 0.94 (95% CI 0.89-0.96) for accuracy and reliability assessments. CONCLUSION: Online information concerning obstetric anal sphincter injury often uses language that is inappropriate for a lay audience and lacks sufficient accuracy, credibility, and reliability

    Investigation of α-cluster states in 13C via the (6Li,d) reaction

    The 9Be(6Li,d)13C reaction was used to investigate possible α-cluster states in 13C. The reaction was measured at 25.5 MeV incident energy, employing the São Paulo Pelletron-Enge-Spectrograph facility and the nuclear emulsion detection technique. Ten out of sixteen known levels of 13C, up to 11 MeV of excitation, were observed and, due to the much improved energy resolution of 50 keV, at least three doublets could be resolved. This work presents a preliminary analysis of five of the most intensely populated states, also in comparison with the results of former transfer studies
