    A rank-ordered list was constructed that reports the first 99 of the 100 most eminent psychologists of the 20th century. Eminence was measured by scores on 3 quantitative variables and 3 qualitative variables. The quantitative variables were journal citation frequency, introductory psychology textbook citation frequency, and survey response frequency. The qualitative variables were National Academy of Sciences membership, election as American Psychological Association (APA) president or receipt of the APA Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award, and surname used as an eponym. The qualitative variables were quantified and combined with the other 3 quantitative variables to produce a composite score that was then used to construct a rank-ordered list of the most eminent psychologists of the 20th century.     The Impact of Prior Mammograms on the Diagnostic Performance of Radiologists in Early Breast Cancer Detection: A Focus on Breast Density, Lesion Features and Vendors Using Wholly Digital Screening Cases

    Background: This study aims to investigate the diagnostic efficacy of radiologists when reading screening mammograms in the absence of previous images, and with the presence of prior images from the same and different vendors. Methods: 612 radiologists’ readings across 9 test sets, consisting of 540 screening mammograms (361-normal and 179-cancer) with 245 cases having prior images obtained from same vendor as current images, 129 from a different vendor and 166 cases having no prior images, were retrospectively analysed. True positive (sensitivity), true negative (specificity) and area under ROC curve (AUC) values of radiologists were calculated for three groups of cases (without prior images (NP), with prior images from same vendor (SP), and with prior images from different vendor (DP)). Logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of true positive, true negative and true cancer localization among case groups with different levels of breast density and lesion characteristics. Results: Radiologists obtained 12.8% and 10.3% higher sensitivity in NP and DP than SP (0.803-and-0.785 vs. 0.712; p p p p p p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Cases without previous mammograms or with prior mammograms obtained from different vendors were more likely to benefit radiologists in cancer detection, whilst prior mammograms undertaken from the same vendor were more useful for radiologists in evaluating normal cases

    Induction of potent cellular immune response in mice by hepatitis C virus NS3 protein with double-stranded RNA

    Double-stranded RNA is produced during virus replication and, together with the viral antigen, is responsible for inducing host antivirus immunity. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) non-structural protein-3 (NS3) has been implicated in the immune evasion of HCV, and is one of the prime targets for inducing immunity against HCV infection. Mice were immunized with recombinant NS3 protein (rNS3) and poly (I:C) emulsified in Montanide ISA 720 (M720). Cytokine production was assayed by enzyme-linked immunospot assay, and CD4+ IFN-γ+ T helper (Th) cells or CD8+ IFN-γ+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes were detected by flow cytometry. Anti-NS3 titre and immunoglobulin G2a (IgG2a) and IgG1 levels were monitored by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Administration of rNS3 formulated in poly (I:C) and M720 induced anti-NS3 titres with a predominantly IgG2a isotype comparable to those induced by rNS3 in CpG-ODN and M720. The cytokine profiles showed that this formulation induced a Th1-biased immune response with several-fold more interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-producing cells than interleukin-4-producing cells. In contrast, rNS3 in M720 induced a Th2-biased immune response. The frequency of IFN-γ-producing CD4+ and CD8+ cells induced by rNS3 in poly (I:C) and M720 was significantly higher than that induced by rNS3, rNS3 in M720, or rNS3 in poly (I:C), and was comparable to that induced by rNS3 in CpG-ODN with M720. The antigen-specific CD8+ T-cell immune response persisted for up to 7 months after immunization. In conclusion, poly (I:C) with rNS3 in M720 can elicit a strong and persistent Th1-biased immune response and a cytotoxic T-lymphocyte response through cross-priming in mice. This study highlighted a promising formulation for inducing an efficient cellular immune response against HCV that has potential for HCV vaccine development
