Impact de l'Open Access sur les citations : une étude de cas

National audienceDe multiples études, dans la littérature internationale, ont cherché à évaluer l’impact de l’Open Access sur le taux de citation des articles scientifiques. La présente étude, en langue française, reste limitée aux publications 2010 de l’Ecole des Ponts. Elle offre néanmoins un état de l’art des précédentes études sur le sujet à un lectorat de professionnels francophones et a pour originalité de mesurer le nombre moyen de citations par mois, avant et après “libération” Open Access des articles et d’éviter ainsi la plupart des biais qui peuvent être rencontrés dans ce type de démarche. En plus de confirmer, comme beaucoup d’autres l’ont fait auparavant, un avantage net de l’Open Access sur le taux de citation en informatique, sciences de la terre et de l'univers, ingénierie, sciences environnementales, mathématiques, physique et astronomie, elle montre aussi qu’une « libération » précoce peut avoir un impact plus favorable qu’une « libération » tardive dans certains champs disciplinaires, comme les mathématiques et physique/astronomie

Critical citations in knowledge construction and citation analysis: from paradox to definition

International audienceCritical citations are lacking a common definition in relation to extant research on knowledge construction and citation analysis, whereas studies on these topics seem to provide a fully relevant theoretical framework, making criticism an essential phenomenon for the progress of science. We propose to explain this paradox by the fact that a citation seems to have a positive polarity by default and that a polarity shift is the result of a stronger commitment on the part of the author. This results in the use of specific cue words. By studying the labels (and their associated definitions) that 53 other studies equated with the concept of critical citation, we identified 3 functions on which to base the definition of critical citation: "to criticize", "to compare" and "to question" other works. While these studies seem to consider the criticize function as central and probably more frequent, the analysis of a corpus of 51 text snippets containing a citation (all retrieved from those same studies) reveals that the citations considered as critical by these same authors are often comparisons between results rather than blunt attacks against the cited works. This three-function based definition and the set of wordings gathered in this study provide a new basis for the design of tools dedicated to citation polarity detection. Indeed, the lexical and grammatical markers characterizing comparison must be taken into account in addition to those expressing a negative evaluation and those expressing doubt

Tracking content updates in Scopus (2011-2018): a quantitative analysis of journals per subject category and subject categories per journal

International audienceThe aim of this study is to track Scopus content updates since 2011 and more particularly the distribution of journals into subject areas. An unprecedented corpus of data related to sources indexed in Scopus has been created and analyzed. Data shows important fluctuations regarding the number of journals per category and the number of categories assigned to journals. Those variations are very irregular, invisible to the average user and unpredictable over time. They question the reliability of studies based on Scopus data if no precautions are taken. The suggestion is made that category changes should not systematically be applied to all previously indexed publications of a journal, but only to those that will be indexed in Scopus after the new assignment is made
