Automated Stabilization, Enhancement and Capillaries Segmentation in Videocapillaroscopy
Oral capillaroscopy is a critical and non-invasive technique used to evaluate microcirculation. Its ability to observe small vessels in vivo has generated significant interest in the field. Capillaroscopy serves as an essential tool for diagnosing and prognosing various pathologies, with anatomicâpathological lesions playing a crucial role in their progression. Despite its importance, the utilization of videocapillaroscopy in the oral cavity encounters limitations due to the acquisition setup, encompassing spatial and temporal resolutions of the video camera, objective magnification, and physical probe dimensions. Moreover, the operatorâs influence during the acquisition process, particularly how the probe is maneuvered, further affects its effectiveness. This study aims to address these challenges and improve data reliability by developing a computerized support system for microcirculation analysis. The designed system performs stabilization, enhancement and automatic segmentation of capillaries in oral mucosal video sequences. The stabilization phase was performed by means of a method based on the coupling of seed points in a classification process. The enhancement process implemented was based on the temporal analysis of the capillaroscopic frames. Finally, an automatic segmentation phase of the capillaries was implemented with the additional objective of quantitatively assessing the signal improvement achieved through the developed techniques. Specifically, transfer learning of the renowned U-net deep network was implemented for this purpose. The proposed method underwent testing on a database with ground truth obtained from expert manual segmentation. The obtained results demonstrate an achieved Jaccard index of 90.1% and an accuracy of 96.2%, highlighting the effectiveness of the developed techniques in oral capillaroscopy. In conclusion, these promising outcomes encourage the utilization of this method to assist in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions that impact microcirculation, such as rheumatologic or cardiovascular disorders

In the United States, billions of pounds of cheese whey permeate and approximately 10 billion pounds of potatoes processed each year are typically discarded or sold as cattle feed at $3{endash}6/ton; moreover, the transportation required for these means of disposal can be expensive. As a potential solution to this economic and environmental problem, Argonne National Laboratory is developing technology that: Biologically converts existing food-processing waste streams into lactic acid and uses lactic acid for making environmentally safe, degradable polylactic acid (PLA) and modified PLA plastics and coatings. An Argonne process for biologically converting high-carbohydrate food waste will not only help to solve a waste problem for the food industry, but will also save energy and be economically attractive. Although the initial substrate for Argonne`s process development is potato by-product, the process can be adapted to convert other food wastes, as well as corn starch, to lactic acid. Proprietary technology for biologically converting greater than 90% of the starch in potato wastes to glucose has been developed. Glucose and other products of starch hydrolysis are subsequently fermented by bacteria that produce lactic acid. The lactic acid is recovered, concentrated, and further purified to a polymer-grade product

De novo mutation in SLC25A22 gene: expansion of the clinical and electroencephalographic phenotype
The SLC25A22 (Solute Carrier Family 25, Member 22) gene encodes for a mitochondrial glutamate/H+ symporter and is involved in the mitochondrial transport of metabolites across the mitochondrial membrane. We hereby report a 12-year-old girl presenting with early-onset epileptic encephalopathy, hypotonia, and global developmental delay. Whole exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous missense mutation in SLC25A22 gene (c.97A>G; p.Lys33Glu), as the likely cause of the disease. The phenotype of our patient and EEG recordings do not completely overlap with the phenotypes previously described, leading to a new and more complex form of disease associated with SLC25A22 variants, characterized by dyskinetic movements and oculogyric crisis
Exploring the Anticancer Activity of Tamoxifen-Based Metal Complexes Targeting Mitochondria
Two new 'hybrid' metallodrugs of Au(III)(AuTAML)and Cu(II) (CuTAML) were designed featuring a tamoxifen-derived pharmacophoreto ideally synergize the anticancer activity of both the metal centerand the organic ligand. The compounds have antiproliferative effectsagainst human MCF-7 and MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cells. Moleculardynamics studies suggest that the compounds retain the binding activityto estrogen receptor (ER & alpha;). In vitro and in silico studies showed that the Au(III) derivative isan inhibitor of the seleno-enzyme thioredoxin reductase, while theCu(II) complex may act as an oxidant of different intracellular thiols.In breast cancer cells treated with the compounds, a redox imbalancecharacterized by a decrease in total thiols and increased reactiveoxygen species production was detected. Despite their different reactivitiesand cytotoxic potencies, a great capacity of the metal complexes toinduce mitochondrial damage was observed as shown by their effectson mitochondrial respiration, membrane potential, and morphology
Magneto-transport and magnetic susceptibility of SmFeAsO1-xFx (x = 0.0 and 0.20)
Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting
SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under
magnetic field {\rho}(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat
(Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x =
0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is
estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of
superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally
activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation
energy (U/kB) is estimated ~1215K for 1kOe field. Magnetic measurements
exhibited bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of ~1.2kOe at
2K. In normal state, the paramagnetic nature of compound confirms no trace of
magnetic impurity which orders ferromagnetically. AC susceptibility
measurements have been carried out for SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample at various
amplitude and frequencies of applied AC drive field. The inter-granular
critical current density (Jc) is estimated. Specific heat [Cp(T)] measurement
showed an anomaly at around 140K due to the SDW ordering of Fe, followed by
another peak at 5K corresponding to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of
Sm+3 ions in SmFeAsO compound. Interestingly the change in entropy (marked by
the Cp transition height) at 5K for Sm+3 AFM ordering is heavily reduced in
case of superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample.Comment: 18 pages text + Figs: comments/suggestions welcome

Influence of a montmorency cherry juice blend on indices of exercise-induced stress and upper respiratory tract symptoms following marathon runningâa pilot investigation
Background: Prolonged exercise, such as marathon running, has been associated with an increase in respiratory mucosal inflammation. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the effects of Montmorency cherry juice on markers of stress, immunity and inflammation following a Marathon.
Methods: Twenty recreational Marathon runners consumed either cherry juice (CJ) or placebo (PL) before and after a Marathon race. Markers of mucosal immunity secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA), immunoglobulin G (IgG), salivary cortisol, inflammation (CRP) and self-reported incidence and severity of upper respiratory tract symptoms (URTS) were measured before and following the race.
Results: All variables except secretory IgA and IgG concentrations in saliva showed a significant time effect (P < 0.01). Serum CRP showed a significant interaction and treatment effect (P < 0.01). The CRP increase at 24 and 48 h post-Marathon was lower (P < 0.01) in the CJ group compared to PL group. Mucosal immunity and salivary cortisol showed no interaction effect or treatment effect. The incidence and severity of URTS was significantly greater than baseline at 24 h and 48 h following the race in the PL group and was also greater than the CJ group (P < 0.05). No URTS were reported in the CJ group whereas 50 % of runners in the PL group reported URTS at 24 h and 48 h post-Marathon.
Conclusions: This is the first study that provides encouraging evidence of the potential role of Montmorency cherries in reducing the development of URTS post-Marathon possibly caused by exercise-induced hyperventilation trauma, and/or other infectious and non-infectious factors
