    The genera Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon (Compositae) have distinct but complex histories and both have been placed in a number of tribes across the family. For the first time the two genera are included in a molecular study and the results show that they are best placed in the tribe Mutisieae s.s. and are the only genera in the re-instated subtribe Adenocaulinae. When described, this subtribe contained only Adenocaulon and was found in the Inuleae. The study also confirms one of the conclusions of a recent morphological study that Eriachaenium and Adenocaulon are sister taxa. Past difficulties in tribal assignment are attributed to the distinct and unusual morphology of each genus.     Changes in spine alignment and postural balance after breast cancer surgery: a rehabilitative point of view

    Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in female patients in developed countries. Recent articles indicate that one-sided mastectomy or minor breast surgery to treat breast cancer can have deleterious effects on posture and the musculoskeletal system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the alterations post-breast cancer surgery of the spine alignment associated to the balance not reported by the noninvasive instrumentation. We enrolled 30 women who had undergone treatment for breast cancer (BG) and were on a waiting-list for rehabilitation treatment and a control group of 30 healthy volunteer women (CG), matched by age and body mass index. The stabilometry was performed using a force platform (Kistler Instruments, Winterthur, Switzerland) test during quiet standing with closed-eyes (EC) and open-eyes (EO), recording the position of the center of pressure (CoP) for 51.2 sec. The stabilogram or the time plot of the two coordinates, X and Y, of the CoP was obtained, which represent anteroposterior and midlateral balance. Spinal posture was measured using the Formetric-4D rasterstereographic system (DIERS, International GmbH, Schlangenbad, Germany), and thoracic kyphotic angle, lumbar lordotic angle, and surface trunk rotation were evaluated. Sixty participants were analyzed (CG:30; BG:30). For the spine rasterstereography a statistically significant difference was shown with regard to anterior-posterior flexion of the trunk major in BG; pelvic inclination and twist of half-pelvis decreased in BG; normalized lumbosacral inversion point decreased in BG; surface rotation major in BG; and lateral deviation major in BG. Compared with the values for the stabilometry test with EO and EC, a statistically significant difference was observed, respectively, for ellipse length (mm; p = 0.04) and ellipse area (mm2; p = 0.04) with EO and in ellipse area (mm2) with EC (p = 0.05), increased in BG for both conditions. No difference was shown for CoP velocity and oscillations between the groups. Breast cancer survivors after prostheses or tissue expanders for mastectomy showed a spine's misalignment present both on the sagittal plane, both on the coronal and frontal plane, increased in BG regard to anterior-posterior flexion of the trunk, surface rotation, and lateral deviation. It is associated with greater energy expenditure for the postural balance control increased in BG with a major ellipse area in EO and EC conditions and major ellipse length in EC condition

    Introduction: Breast-cancer is leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women. The prognosis and survival rate of women with breast-cancer have significantly improved worldwide; more attention needs to be paid to rehabilitative interventions after surgery. This paper describes use of reaching movement to assess upper limb motorcontrol and functional ability after breast-cancer surgery (BC). Material and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study consisting of biomechanical evaluation of upper limb limitations in women BC, versus a controlgroup (CG). Thirty breast-cancer survivors and thirty healthy women participated in this study. Both groups were subjected to clinical evaluation of the shoulder joint ROM on the operated side, as an assessment of the muscular-strength of the shoulder with the MRC-scale. The Functional-Assessment was evaluated by the DASH and Constant-Murley-Score. The EORTC QLQ-C30 and VAS were used to measure the quality of life assessment and pain respectively. A Biomechanical evaluation was performed, using Reaching-Task and Surface-EMG. Results: Normal Jerk for BC was higher than CG. Target approaching velocity and movement duration BC was lower than CG. Synergy Anterior Deltoid/Triceps Brachii muscles in CG was higher than BC

    Simple and informative: applying a basic Anthophila monitoring scheme in a simplified insular ecosystem

    The decline of pollinators and the consequent decay of pollination services call for the establishment of monitoring schemes for several groups of pollinators. For Anthophila (Hymenoptera), the design of monitoring schemes is still under development. The main difficulties lie in combining a reliable but field-feasible taxonomic identification with the collection of informative data about the consistency and functional role of pollinator populations. Here we report on the application of the Italian monitoring scheme for pollinators recently defined by ISPRA and the University of Turin in agreement with the European Pollinators Monitoring Scheme on the small island of Giannutri (Tuscany), a simplified insular ecosystem with a virtually unknown pollinator community. This island has recently experienced a drastic change in its bee community, as since 2018 honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) hives are regularly moved every year to the island for breeding purposes. In the spring 2021 we established six 250 m long fixed transects and performed a total of 48 surveys (8 for each transect), recording more than 2300 observations of 9 Anthophila bee taxa and the flowers they visited. By using generalised additive mixed models, we showed that the monitoring protocol has a good potential for monitoring Anthophila, as we could verify several expected relationships between Anthophila abundance and abiotic factors (season, hour of the day, distance from the apiary) and biotic factors (abundance of flower resources). More importantly, we verified that A. mellifera represents by far the most frequent Anthophila taxon. Our data do not show evidence for spatial partition between A. mellifera and the other most frequent taxa (Bombus terrestris L. and Anthophora spp.). The visit network based on transect observations also showed that these taxa largely overlapped in terms of visits to flower resources. Overall, our data showed that the monitoring protocol allows gathering informative data about Anthophila taxa abundance, interactions and flower-visits. Moreover, the spatial and flower-visit overlap suggest potential for competition between honey bees and wild pollinators, with a potential consequent resource depletion for the latter. While this hypothesis could only be assessed by a long-term monitoring and ad hoc honey bee removal experiments, our data show that this basic monitoring protocol produces rapid and valuable information about Anthophila community and dynamics

    Recognition of dileucine-based sorting signals from HIV-1 Nef and LIMP-II by the AP-1 γ–σ1 and AP-3 δ–σ3 hemicomplexes

    The sorting of transmembrane proteins to endosomes and lysosomes is mediated by signals present in the cytosolic tails of the proteins. A subset of these signals conform to the [DE]XXXL[LI] consensus motif and mediate sorting via interactions with heterotetrameric adaptor protein (AP) complexes. However, the identity of the AP subunits that recognize these signals remains controversial. We have used a yeast three-hybrid assay to demonstrate that [DE]XXXL[LI]-type signals from the human immunodeficiency virus negative factor protein and the lysosomal integral membrane protein II interact with combinations of the γ and σ1 subunits of AP-1 and the δ and σ3 subunits of AP-3, but not the analogous combinations of AP-2 and AP-4 subunits. The sequence requirements for these interactions are similar to those for binding to the whole AP complexes in vitro and for function of the signals in vivo. These observations reveal a novel mode of recognition of sorting signals involving the γ/δ and σ subunits of AP-1 and AP-3

    Cloning, expression, and localization of a novel γ-adaptin-like molecule

    AbstractWe describe the cloning, expression, and localization of γ2-adaptin, a novel isoform of γ-adaptin. The predicted human and mouse γ2-adaptin proteins are ∼90 kDa and 64.4% and 61.7% identical to γ-adaptin, respectively. γ2-Adaptin was localized to the Golgi, its localization distinct from γ-adaptin. The membrane association of γ- and γ2-adaptin could further be distinguished by differential sensitivity to the fungal metabolite brefeldin A, γ2-adaptin binding being insensitive to drug treatment. Together, these results suggest that γ2-adaptin plays a role in membrane transport distinct from that played by γ-adaptin
