    QUICKEN AS A FARM ACCOUNTING SYSTEM: A LESSON PLAN ON CASH BASIS RECORDKEEPING WITH ACCRUAL-ADJUSTED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

    The purpose of this document is to demonstrate how Quicken, a popular checkbook management software program, can be used to keep a set of records for the farm business that will measure profits, liquidity, and solvency. This is a revision of ERI 95-02, with more detailed explanations. All graphics have been eliminated and fonts have been changed so this document can be printed on most printers. It is based on an example farm used in the Business Management in Agriculture (BMA) series of videos and workbooks developed in the late 1980s, and draws on materials prepared by Dr. Ken Stokes of Texas A&M University. It will best be understood if used as a study guide, and that entries actually be made in Quicken as they are encountered in the guide, and following the instructions given in Appendix A. By the time you complete this exercise, you will have a much better idea how to keep records on your farm, and how useful the reports will be in managing your farm or ranch operation. Appendix A contains instructions for those who received a disk with files already set up. If you did not receive a disk, consider yourself lucky. You will probably learn more just from having to go through the steps of setting up the accounts and categories. This is not intended to be an introductory course in either recordkeeping or Quicken. It requires some previous training in Quicken. Those with a basic understanding of accounting principles will find it easier to understand and will have less trouble making entries for their own business.     Signal-to-Noise Eigenmode Analysis of the Two-Year COBE Maps

    To test a theory of cosmic microwave background fluctuations, it is natural to expand an anisotropy map in an uncorrelated basis of linear combinations of pixel amplitudes --- statistically-independent for both the noise and the signal. These S/NS/N-eigenmodes are indispensible for rapid Bayesian analyses of anisotropy experiments, applied here to the recently-released two-year COBE {\it dmr} maps and the {\it firs} map. A 2-parameter model with an overall band-power and a spectral tilt νΔT\nu_{\Delta T} describes well inflation-based theories. The band-powers for {\it all} the {\it dmr} 53,90,3153,90,31 aa+bb GHz and {\it firs} 170 GHz maps agree, {(1.1±0.1)×105}1/2\{(1.1\pm 0.1)\times 10^{-5}\}^{1/2}, and are largely independent of tilt and degree of (sharp) S/NS/N-filtering. Further, after optimal S/NS/N-filtering, the {\it dmr} maps reveal the same tilt-independent large scale features and correlation function. The unfiltered {\it dmr} 5353 aa+bb index νΔT+1\nu_{\Delta T}+1 is 1.4±0.41.4\pm 0.4; increasing the S/NS/N-filtering gives a broad region at (1.0--1.2)±\pm0.5, a jump to (1.4--1.6)±\pm0.5, then a drop to 0.8, the higher values clearly seen to be driven by S/NS/N-power spectrum data points that do not fit single-tilt models.     An overview of shed ice impact in the NASA Lewis Icing Research Tunnel

    One of the areas of active research in commercial and military rotorcraft is directed toward developing the capability of sustained flight in icing conditions. The emphasis to date has been on the accretion and subsequent shedding of ice in an icing environment, where the shedding may be natural or induced. Historically, shed-ice particles have been a problem for aircraft, particularly rotorcraft. Because of the high particle velocities involved, damage to a fuselage or other airframe component from a shed-ice impact can be significant. Design rules for damage tolerance from shed-ice impact are not well developed because of a lack of experimental data. Thus, NASA Lewis (LeRC) has begun an effort to develop a database of impact force and energy resulting from shed ice. This effort consisted of a test of NASA LeRC's Model Rotor Test Rig (MRTR) in the Icing Research Tunnel (IRT). Both natural shedding and forced shedding were investigated. Forced shedding was achieved by fitting the rotor blades with Small Tube Pneumatic (STP) deicer boots manufactured by BF Goodrich. A detailed description of the test is given as well as the design of a new impact sensor which measures the force-time history of an impacting ice fragment. A brief discussion of the procedure to infer impact energy from a force-time trace are required for the impact-energy calculations.     Regulators express growing concern over “predatory lending,” which we take to mean lending that reduces the expected utility of borrowers. We present a rational model of consumer credit in which such lending is possible, and identify the circumstances in which it arises with and without competition. Predatory lending is associated with imperfect competition, highly collateralized loans, and poorly informed borrowers. Using a model of consumer credit in which such lending is possible, we identify the circumstances in which it arises both with and without competition. We find that predatory lending is associated with highly collateralized loans, inefficient refinancing of subprime loans, lending without due regard to ability to pay, prepayment penalties, balloon payments, and poorly informed borrowers.     Dark Energy Evolution and the Curvature of the Universe from Recent Observations

    We discuss the constraints on the time-varying equation of state for dark energy and the curvature of the universe using observations of type Ia supernovae from Riess et al. and the most recent Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS), the baryon acoustic oscillation peak detected in the SDSS luminous red galaxy survey and cosmic microwave background. Due to the degeneracy among the parameters which describe the time dependence of the equation of state and the curvature of the universe, the constraints on them can be weakened when we try to constrain them simultaneously, in particular when we use a single observational data. However, we show that we can obtain relatively severe constraints when we use all data sets from observations above even if we consider the time-varying equation of state and do not assume a flat universe. We also found that the combined data set favors a flat universe even if we consider the time variation of dark energy equation of state.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, references adde
