Review of surface factors in stress corrosion cracking of alloys
From morphological observations of typical cracks in a susceptible system of wide practical interest, a number of distinctive features is pointed out and a comprehensive definition drawn for stress-corrosion cracking. Electrochemical mechanisms of crack nucleation at passive or relatively inert surfaces and subsequent subcritical propagation of nucleated cracks are outlined according to the most accepted models. Besides the number of surface factors involved in both stages, special theoretical consideration is given to the direct role played by surface energy in a growing crack. This is in relation to the highly active state of the metal at the crack tip (i. e. high tendency to release surface atoms) in front of the passive state of side surfaces. In the light of the mechanisms outlined, basic techniques are described for the experimental study of stress-corrosion cracking susceptibility
Prospects for metals and materials from deep sea ores
With the long-term availability of the immense mineral resources represented by sea-bed nodules, the present deep crisis in the ferrous and non-ferrous metals industry offers a unique opportunity to critically review the resource-dispersive, speculative development system of the industrialized world, and establish a rational metals and materials policy.The polymetallic character of ocean nodules, which in the not-far-distant future could become a major source of metals to the entire world, appears to suggest the opportunity of turning from traditional carbothermic reduction of (monometallic) oxide ores to less energy consuming, more 'chemical' metallurgies, capable of extracting all the metal content from complex ores.In this viewpoint, the potential of carbochlorination for the processing treatment of nodules is assessed and some of the possible effects of ocean-ores exploitation on a new materials policy are considered
Age-dependent changes in insulin-like immunoreactivity in rat submandibular salivary glands.
In recent years, a growing interest had arisen in hormonal factors in salivary glands. We have investigated the changes in the content of an insulin-like immunoreactive (ILI) compound in the submandibular salivary glands of Sprague Dawley rats during physiological aging, in the range 15 days-27 months. The amount of ILI in the submandibular glands of young adult rats was found to be doubled in the post-natal period until the age of puberty and was maintained in senescence. No significant correlation was found between age-dependent variations in ILI levels of submandibular salivary glands and circulating insulin concentrations, further supporting previous indications that ILI is being synthesized in situ. It is possible that ILI could exert paracrine effects within the glands, as regards the development of other glandular structures during the first months of life, as well as the preservation of glandular function in senescent animals as well
Rapidity distributions around mid-rapidity of strange particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c
The production at central rapidity of K0s, Lambda, Xi and Omega particles in
Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c has been measured by the NA57 experiment over a
centrality range corresponding to the most central 53% of the inelastic Pb-Pb
cross section. In this paper we present the rapidity distribution of each
particle in the central rapidity unit as a function of the event centrality.
The distributions are analyzed based on hydrodynamical models of the

Study of the transverse mass spectra of strange particles in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c
The NA57 experiment has collected high statistics, high purity samples of
\PKzS and \PgL, and hyperons produced in Pb-Pb collisions at 158
GeV/. In this paper we present a study of the transverse mass spectra of
these particles for a sample of events corresponding to the most central 53% of
the inelastic Pb-Pb cross-section. We analyse the transverse mass distributions
in the framework of the blast-wave model for the full sample and, for the first

Strangeness enhancements at central rapidity in 40 A GeV/c Pb-Pb collisions
Results are presented on neutral kaon, hyperon and antihyperon production in
Pb-Pb and p-Be interactions at 40 GeV/c per nucleon. The enhancement pattern
follows the same hierarchy as seen in the higher energy data - the enhancement
increases with the strangeness content of the hyperons and with the centrality
of collision. The centrality dependence of the Pb-Pb yields and enhancements is
steeper at 40 than at 158 A GeV/c. The energy dependence of strangeness

We report results from the experiment NA57 at CERN SPS on hyperon production
at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/ and 40 GeV/.

Expansion dynamics of Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A GeV/c viewed by negatively charged hadrons
In this paper we present results on transverse mass spectra and Hanbury-Brown
and Twiss correlation functions of negatively charged hadrons, which are
expected to be mostly negative pions, measured in Pb-Pb collisions at 40 A
GeV/c beam momentum. Based on these data, the collision dynamics and the
space-time extent of the system at the thermal freeze-out are studied over a
centrality range corresponding to the most central 53% of the Pb--Pb inelastic
cross section. Comparisons with freeze-out conditions of strange particles and
HBT results from other experiments are discussed.Comment: 29 pages, 18 figure
