Cancer Survivors’ Health Behaviors and Outcomes: A Population-Based Study of Sexual and Gender Minorities
BACKGROUND: Most case-control studies compare cancer survivors with general population controls without considering sexual orientation or gender identity. This case-control analysis compared health risk behaviors and health outcomes among sexual and gender minority cancer survivors to those of matched sexual and gender minority participants without cancer (controls).
METHODS: Using data from the 2014-2021 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, a population-based sample of 4507 cancer survivors who self-identified as transgender, gay men, bisexual men, lesbian women, or bisexual women were 1:1 propensity score matched, using age at survey, race and ethnicity, marital status, education, access to health care, and US census region. Within each sexual and gender minority group, behaviors and outcomes were compared between survivors and participants without cancer, and survivors\u27 odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals calculated.
RESULTS: Gay male survivors had higher odds of depression, poor mental health, limited usual activities, difficulty concentrating, and fair or poor health. Few differences were observed between bisexual male survivors and participants without cancer. Compared with controls, lesbian female survivors had greater odds of overweight-obese status, depression, poor physical health, and fair or poor health. Bisexual female survivors had the highest rates of current smoking, depression, poor mental health, and difficulty concentrating across all sexual and gender minority groups. Statistically significantly different from transgender controls, transgender survivors had greater odds of heavy alcohol use, physical inactivity, and fair or poor health.
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis revealed an urgent need to address the high prevalence of engaging in multiple health risk behaviors and not following guidelines to avoid second cancers, additional adverse outcomes, and cancer recurrences among sexual and gender minority cancer survivors
Approval-Based Committee Voting in Practice: A Case Study of (Over-)Representation in the Polkadot Blockchain
We provide the first large-scale data collection of real-world approval-based
committee elections. These elections have been conducted on the Polkadot
blockchain as part of their Nominated Proof-of-Stake mechanism and contain
around one thousand candidates and tens of thousands of (weighted) voters each.
We conduct an in-depth study of application-relevant questions, including a
quantitative and qualitative analysis of the outcomes returned by different
voting rules. Besides considering proportionality measures that are standard in
the multiwinner voting literature, we pay particular attention to less-studied
measures of overrepresentation, as these are closely related to the security of
the Polkadot network. We also analyze how different design decisions such as

Neighborhood Characteristics and Colorectal Cancer Survivors\u27 Quality of Care
Purpose: Quality cancer care entails receipt of a Survivorship Care Plan (SCP). The purpose of this study was to determine differences in SCP delivery by patient-level and neighborhood characteristics.
Methods: We obtained California cancer registry data on individuals who were diagnosed with stage I, II, or III colorectal cancer (CRC) between 2012 and 2015 and resided in predetermined geographic areas. We then mailed them a questionnaire, which queried about receipt of a SCP and its content. SCP was defined by content, as summary of cancer treatment, cancer surveillance recommendations, and/or an individualized preventive care. Using logistic regression modeling, each measure of SCP, as well as the summary measure (none vs. any), was evaluated by person-level characteristics. Subsequently, neighborhood-level characteristics were added to the model to explore their additional value.
Results: Overall 80% of CRC survivors received a SCP. Receipt of SCPs was associated with person-level characteristics, while neighborhood characteristics did not make an additional contribution. Young, male employed survivors and those with more recent diagnoses or later cancer stages had greater odds of receiving a SCP.
Conclusion: When providing SCPs, health care providers prioritize patient groups who they may perceive as vulnerable or likely to benefit from SCPs
LegacyClimate 1.0: a dataset of pollen-based climate reconstructions from 2594 Northern Hemisphere sites covering the last 30 kyr and beyond
Here we describe LegacyClimate 1.0, a dataset of the reconstruction of the mean July temperature (TJuly), mean annual temperature (Tann), and annual precipitation (Pann) from 2594 fossil pollen records from the Northern Hemisphere, spanning the entire Holocene, with some records reaching back to the Last Glacial Period. Two reconstruction methods, the modern analog technique (MAT) and weighted averaging partial least squares regression (WA-PLS), reveal similar results regarding spatial and temporal patterns. To reduce the impact of precipitation on temperature reconstruction, and vice versa, we also provide reconstructions using tailored modern pollen data, limiting the range of the corresponding other climate variables. We assess the reliability of the reconstructions, using information from the spatial distributions of the root mean squared error in the prediction and reconstruction significance tests. The dataset is beneficial for synthesis studies of proxy-based reconstructions and to evaluate the output of climate models and thus help to improve the models themselves. We provide our compilation of reconstructed TJuly, Tann, and Pann as open-access datasets at PANGAEA (https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.930512; Herzschuh et al., 2023a). The R code for the reconstructions is provided at Zenodo (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7887565; Herzschuh et al., 2023b), including the harmonized open-access modern and fossil datasets used for the reconstructions, so that customized reconstructions can be easily established
An ecological analysis of colorectal cancer incidence and mortality: Differences by sexual orientation
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Some have suggested gays and lesbians may carry a greater burden of colorectal cancer. To date, individual sexual orientation data are not available in cancer surveillance registries. This prevents an assessment of differences in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality by sexual orientation, using individual-level data.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We use an ecological approach to examine differences in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality by county-level sexual orientation data. From the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program we obtain population-based surveillance data on colorectal cancer incidence and mortality from 1996 to 2004. We use Census 2000 data on same-sex partnered households, a proxy of sexual orientation, to derive county-level sexual orientation data. Using multiple regression models, we examined the county-level association of sexual minority density with colorectal cancer incidence and mortality.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After controlling for race and SES, we identify a significant positive association between greater density of sexual minority men and women and colorectal cancer incidence. With respect to colorectal cancer mortality, we identify a positive association with density of sexual minority men, but not women.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In the absence of surveillance data on sexual minority individuals, ecological analyses provide estimates of associations at the aggregate level, thereby providing crucial information for follow-up studies.</p
Development of a GEM-TPC prototype
The use of GEM foils for the amplification stage of a TPC instead of a con-
ventional MWPC allows one to bypass the necessity of gating, as the backdrift
is suppressed thanks to the asymmetric field configuration. This way, a novel
continuously running TPC, which represents one option for the PANDA central
tracker, can be realized. A medium sized prototype with a diameter of 300 mm
and a length of 600 mm will be tested inside the FOPI spectrometer at GSI using
a carbon or lithium beam at intermediate energies (E = 1-3AGeV). This detector
test under realistic experimental conditions should allow us to verify the
spatial resolution for single tracks and the reconstruction capability for
displaced vertexes. A series of physics measurement implying pion beams is
