    Synthesis and spectroscopic analysis of Schiff Bases of Imesatin and Isatin derivatives

    A series of new Schiff bases of Imesatin and Isatin derivatives which have been previously prepared from the reaction of Hydrazine monohydrate, p-phenylenediamine and 4,4- diaminodiphenylmethane with Isatin were reported. The compounds were characterized by elemental analyses, UV-visible, Infrared and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H NMR and 13C NMR) spectroscopic analyses. The synthesized Schiff bases were obtained in moderate to excellent yields between 55.3 – 89.3%. Infrared spectra of all synthesized compounds contain the characteristic azomethine linkage (-CH=N) between 1580 – 1630 cm-1 and the N–H of the Isatin ring signals between δ 8.32 – 10.68 ppm in their 1H NMR spectra. The present work affords reaction pathway that is efficient and operational simplicity for the synthesis of Schiff bases derivatives.Keywords: Schiff bases, isatin, imesatin, spectroscopic analysis, biological activit

    Investigation of the Larvicidal Potential of Silver Nanoparticles against Culex quinquefasciatus

    Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Cassia hirsuta aqueous leaf extract were reported in this study. The synthesis was optimized by measuring various parameters such as temperature, time, volume ratio, and concentration. The surface plasmon resonance at 440 nm for 30°C and 420 nm for both 50°C and 70°C measured using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer confirmed the formation of AgNPs synthesized using C. hirsuta (CAgNPs). The functional groups responsible for the reduction and stabilization of the NPs were identified using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The morphology, size, and elemental composition of the NPs were obtained using scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). X-ray diffractometer was used to identify the phases and crystallinity of CAgNPs. Crystalline spherical NPs with average diameter of 6.9 ± 0.1 nm were successfully synthesized. The thermal analysis of CAgNPs was observed from DSC-TGA. The larvicidal results against the different larva instar stage of Culex quinquefasciatus gave LC50 = 4.43 ppm and LC90 = 8.37 ppm. This is the first study on the synthesis of AgNPs using C. hirsuta and its application against lymphatic filariasis vector. Hence, it is suggested that the C. hirsuta synthesized AgNPs would be environmentally benign in biological control of mosquito

    Physical and Chemical Properties of Soils in Gambari Forest Reserve Near Ibadan, South Western Nigeria.

    The different features of soil greatly affect the flora and vegetative diversity of a forest. The physical and chemical characteristics of soils in Onigambari Forest Reserve were evaluated to assess the fertility and productivity status of the soils. Fifteen soil samples collected from different sample locations were analyzed for soil texture (sand, silt and clay), bulk density, porosity, pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, exchangeable bases (Na, K, Ca and Mg) and available micronutrients (Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn). Texturally, the studied soils were loamy sand and sandy loam with percentage of sands (71.2-84.2 %), silts (7.4-10.4 %) and clay (6.4-19.4 %). The bulk density of the soils was 1.61-1.83 % while the porosity of the soils ranged from 35.2-44.1 %. The slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (5.90 - 6.60) and medium organic matter content (1.68 -2.60 %) suggest adequate level of soil nutrients. The soils had high total nitrogen (0.35 -0.65 %) and available phosphorus contents between 10.98 and 18.22mg/kg

    Hydrochemical Assessment of Groundwater around Lapite Dumpsite for Irrigation Water Quality in Ibadan, Southwestern Nigeria

    Due to the increase in population and industrialization growth, most countries in the world depend on groundwater to meet agriculture demands for food production. The increase in water contamination due to indiscriminate solid wastes has necessitated the assessment of water quality and its suitability for agricultural usage. Twenty four groundwater and ten stream water samples were randomly collected from the downslope and upslope side of the dumpsite for all the major physio-chemical parameters. The pH of water samples indicates slightly acidic to alkaline in nature. High concentrations of nitrate, total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity suggest the impact of the waste on the water resource. Assessment of irrigation water quality based on Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), Soluble Sodium Percentage (SSP), Permeability Index (PI) and Magnesium content (MC) indicated that most of the water samples fall within the permissible standard for irrigation water. Thus, the water should be used with caution on crops for long time agricultural sustainability

    Ficus mucoso is traditionally used to treat bronchial infections. This study compared the efficacy of terpene-rich fractions of F. mucoso root bark on lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced inflammation, liver mitochondrial permeability transition (mPT), an index of mitochondrial health, and associated pathological alterations. Terpene-Rich Fractions of Dichloromethane (TRDF) and Ethylacetate Fractions of F. mucoso (TREF) were obtained according to standard procedures. To induce systemic inflammation, a single intraperitoneal injection of 1mgLPS/kgbw was given to mice. Spectrophotometric techniques were used to evaluate the effects of the oral administration of TRDF and TREF (3 days) on levels of pro-inflammatory mediators (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) using ELSA techniques as well as antioxidant indices in normal and LPS-treated mice. The mPT pore opening, mitochondrial ATPase activity and lipid peroxidation were monitored spectrophotometrically. Our results revealed that treatment with LPS caused significant elevation in serum cytokine levels while administration of 50 and 100 mg/kg TRDF and TREF significantly reduced elevated serum levels of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) in LPS-challenged mice. In addition, activitities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and liver marker enzymes (ALT and AST) as well as levels of mitochondrial lipid peroxides were significantly reduced in mice treated with TRDF and TREF relative to LPS-fed mice. Furthermore, LPS caused induction of opening of the liver mPT pore which was significantly inhibited by TRDF at 100 and 200 mg/kg bw by 71% and 88%, respectively, but only at 100 mg/kg TREF. Furthermore, mitochondrial ATPase activity was inhibited largely by TRDF. UPLC–ESI–MS analysis revealed the presence of terpenoid derivatives and a few aromatic metabolites in TRDF. The terpene dominance of TRDF metabolites was further justified on the 1H NMR fingerprint. Overall, TRDF is more effective as a cocktail of anti-inflammatory compounds than TREF against LPS-induced acute systemic inflammation
