Geometry of diagonal-effect models for contingency tables

In this work we study several types of diagonal-effect models for two-way contingency tables in the framework of Algebraic Statistics. We use both toric models and mixture models to encode the different behavior of the diagonal cells. We compute the invariants of these models and we explore their geometrical structure.Comment: 20 page

Perturbation of matrices and non-negative rank with a view toward statistical models

In this paper we study how perturbing a matrix changes its non-negative rank. We prove that the non-negative rank is upper-semicontinuos and we describe some special families of perturbations. We show how our results relate to Statistics in terms of the study of Maximum Likelihood Estimation for mixture models.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. SEN policies and migrant children in Italian schools:micro-exclusions through discourses of equality

    Get PDF
This article analyses the underpinnings and implementation of Special Educational Needs (SEN) policies in Italy, within the internationally celebrated policy arena of Integrazione Scolastica (i.e. school integration), through an equity prism. The aim is to explore the extent to which SEN policies in Italy foster inclusion and equity in education, particularly when targeting migrant children. In doing so, the paper intends to advance critical thinking about the recent phenomenon of over-representation, or ‘SENitization’, of students from migrant backgrounds within the SEN macro-category in Italy, by examining policy narratives both nationally and locally. Analysing the policies through the intersectional lens of Disability Critical Race Theory in education framework, this article suggest that Italian SEN policies legitimates forms of micro-exclusions of migrant students in mainstream classrooms, despite discursive promises of equality for all students

La questione insegnante di sostegno, tra evoluzioni, boicottaggi e libertĂ  di fare ricerca

The debate about the support teacher has been enhanced last year with a proposal which considers a possible evolution of its role and function that has raised an ample discussion in the scientificresearch area and a clear stance on the part of some teachers who have created a form of boycott against the promoter of the proposal. In this paper we analyze the reasons behind this protest, trying moreover to clarify some problematic issues that risk, if not spelled out and not properly eviscerated, on the one hand to make the debate sterile (wrapping it around a sort of personal case) and, on the other hand, to harden the interested parties on trench positions which don’t allow a qualitative leap towards a comparison and a search for solutions relying on objective data instead of perceptions or beliefs that are not supported by proper arguments. The debate about the support teacher has been enhanced last year with a proposal which considers a possible evolution of its role and function that has raised an ample discussion in the scientificresearch area and a clear stance on the part of some teachers who have created a form of boycott against the promoter of the proposal. “Il Tempo e la Storia”. Un libro, un luogo e un film per la Pedagogia Speciale

Starting from some suggestions of the television program “Il Tempo e la Storia”, broadcasted by RAI, the author identifies a book, a place and a movie as emblematic elements characterizing the Special Pedagogy. In continuity with previous personal and other scholars’ (Gatto, Canevaro, Trisciuzzi, Crispiani, De Anna, Goussot, d’Alonzo, Pavone, Mura, Galanti, Zappaterra and others’) papers, the author in this article tries to highlight some typical historical events of the education of disabled people, who seldom are included in the History of Education and Pedagogy. In particular, also here emerges what seems to be a peculiarity of Special Pedagogy, that is, bringing out issues related to the education of all (starting from the most vulnerable ones) but often not immediately visible to all (and among these, even those should be insiders).Starting from some suggestions of the television program “Il Tempo e la Storia”, broadcasted by RAI, the author identifies a book, a place and a movie as emblematic elements characterizing the Special Pedagogy. I Medici Pedagogisti. Itinerari storici di una vocazione educativa

    Get PDF
By relying on the assumption that there are some missing, unknown, or omitted pieces in the History of Pedagogy and Education that are traceable in the History of other contiguous sciences, such as Medicine and Psychology, the author of this paper focuses his attention on the important role played by Medical Pedagogists. Among them we find such renowned names as Itard, Séguin, Montessori, Montesano, Bollea, but also lesser known ones such as Tamburini, Morselli, Pizzoli or Ferrari. These women and men devoted their attention to the education of people with disabilities, redefining the concept of education itself. For this reason, they should not be placed in a separate area- such as a supposed clinical pedagogy - or outside Science of Education, but ought to be identified as part of a historical path regarding education. A path that, by unfurling in the many Stories that constitute it, eventually leads to multiplicity, which is one of the distinctive traits of Special Pedagogy.I Medici Pedagogisti.Itinerari storici di una vocazione educativ
